《Christmas Wish (Completed)》Chapter 11

Jack and I clean up the mess from our lunches. Nicolas wakes up and Jack helps him into the bathroom, while I lay out his food for him.
When they come out, I check him over to see how he is feeling from his first full round of chemotherapy.
"I am okay, maybe a little hungry." Nicolas yawns.
"Does anything hurt at all?" I ask him, sitting on the side of the bed.
"My knees hurt just a little, but it is not much. Almost like when I would run all day."
"Okay, if they start hurting any worse you let me know. Right?" I smile at him and pull the tray of food up.
"I will Holly. You're a nice doctor and helping me. I didn't like being like I was before, where I could hear sometimes but felt like I couldn't open my eyes."
My heart breaks some for Nicolas. No child should have to go through the state of comatose between awake and asleep.
"I am going to do my best so that don't happen again. The only thing I need from you is to tell me how you feel at all times and use those big muscles." I move my fingers at him earning giggles.
"How can I use my muscles?" He asks after swallowing his food.
Jack moves to sit on the other side of his bed and watches us.
"Well, you know that you have cancer. Those are bad little cells just like those bad guys they catch on your favorite shows in a way. We have to look for clues to see where we can help you the most in fighting off the bad guys all while you use those muscles to help."
"But Holly no muscles are on the inside of me like my arms." Nicolas laughs.

"Hmm, you got muscles inside here and here that work all the time for you." I point to his chest.
"What are those?" Nicolas smiles.
"Your heart is a muscle and then lungs are as well. Those are very important muscles. Just like right now with the type of cancer you have keeping your arms and legs moving when you can to help build those muscles will help too." I smile at him, while he looks amazed.
"See daddy! I am learning even here!" Nicolas smiles bright.
"I hear that buddy, and I am learning right along with you." Jack laughs.
That laugh from him does something to me and my heart flutters, hard.
"What can I do more to help, Holly?" Nicolas looks to me.
"Your eating very good for us now and that little man, is very important to everything also." I smile and lean closer to him some. "But we can still sneak you a few treats too."
I hand him a very small pack of lifersaver's gummies. Nicolas gently takes it from my hand and then bounds out of his spot on the bed to wrap his arms around me. I catch him easily and watch for his IV line, making sure it doesn't get caught up on anything.
Jack holds his hands out but then relaxes once he sees I caught Nicolas.
"Thank you so much Holly. You help when no one else wanted too." He whispers.
I rub his back and hug him back. Taking in a breath of air to where I can stem the tears from wanting to flow that rushed to the surface with his words. No young child should have ever had to think that and understand what it means.
I help Nicolas to sit back on the bed safely and help him open the gummies up. He hands one to his dad, but I smile and pull another pack out.

"Would you like some gummies Jack?" I hand one out to him. As he laughs and thanks me for them.
I stand and grab my computer to sign in. Part of me is making a vow to myself here and now, this is where I want to work. Pediatrics is my calling, because children need a voice that will help them and to help the parents through tough times.
I pick up my computer and walk out to the nurse station.
"Have a nice lunch?" Jewels smirks.
"Why yes I did." I laugh some. "I have figured something out though Jewels."
"What's that?"
"My field will be peds."
Jewels does a quiet squeal and round the counter to hug me. I see Tony walk by and go into the room to visit Nicolas and Jack.
Jewels goes back to her work as I type out the message on the chat we have that links all interns together. Letting Dr. Marshall know this is the field I have choose. Massie was quick to response and is so happy, with her saying perfect team because she helps birth babies then they will come to me for evaluation.
"I knew this was where your calling was Holly." Dr. Marshall says walking up.
The man never is one to reply back over words online. He prefers doing it in person and I have never seen him text just like my Dad. They are still more on simple talking.
"Thank you. I have felt the pull to be on this floor and it is not just because of my case I currently have."
"I knew it wouldn't be. You have the perfect manners and personality that it takes to work in pediatrics. Something that can be hard to find in most people." Dr. Marshall smiles.
"Dr. Calista, both Mr. Winters and Mr. Stephens are ready to do the blood test when you are." Jewels walks up from doing her normal rounds checking.
"Thanks, Jewels." I smile.
Dr. Marshall excuses himself and I set off to the supply section behind the nurse station to grab the items needed for the blood draws. Jack and Tony are ready to do it, together for Nicolas.
I walk in the room after knocking on the door and hearing Jack answering with the normal 'come in'. We go over the paperwork for them to sign for consent to perform this blood draw and lab work. I put the papers to the side and wash up before putting on the gloves and taking a sample from each of them.
"This could take a little bit on getting the results back. Once they are in I will go over and see if either of you are a match and if so which one is the closet to choose for the harvesting needed when it comes time." I smile. They thank me as I make my way back out of the room and off to the lab.
