《Timeless》27

Another school year blazed by and we're on the heels of Stevie's solo tour. Her album is still burning up at the top of the charts and mine is losing out to hers. Sara's last ballet showcase is tonight, I've sat through two already. Tomorrow is the parent game day. Stevie and I are doing the bean bag toss. It's been a lot nicer having her at home. A lot easier almost. I've been a single father for a year and it sucks. Ginny is a lot happier now that mommy's back. Sara's not really a grudge holder but she got so used to Stevie not being here that she brushes her off.
On game day, Deb and Paul spot me immediately. They're running the long jump.
"Hey, is Sara still able to come by on the last day?" Deb asks.
"Yes absolutely, I'm surprised you aren't working." I smile.
"I took the day off, I've been there for ten years and I've not missed a day. I worked right up until I went into labor and Paul took leave. I didn't." Deb explains.
"Oh Stevie, this is Debra and Paul Byron. Samantha's parents. They teach high school. Deb, Paul this is my wife Stephanie. But everyone calls her Stevie." I say.
"Nice to meet you." Stevie shakes their hands.
"So you worked everything out." Deb smiles.
"We did. Stevie's been home now since February." I reply.
She officially moved all her clothes and some other things she accumulated back in on Valentine's Day.
"I'm glad. Sara talks so highly of you and how much she missed you." Paul smiles as the opening ceremony begins.
The school tries to intermingle grades. Sara ended up on Angeline's team with Sam and three other first graders. Three kindergarteners and two-second graders. The team captains are staff members who are given a list of each game and who's running it and a schedule. They have fifteen minutes at each station.
"Alright purple team, this is Mr. and Mrs. Buckingham. They're going to tell you about the bean-bag toss." Angeline smiles.
My wife who has her teaching degree is in her element as she takes the lead and starts telling the kids what they're doing.
"It's nice to see her here," Angeline says.
"It really is. She moved back in around Valentine's day. I forgot how nice it was having another person to help. I also realized how horrible my cooking skills are. I'm surprised I didn't kill poor Sara with my cooking." I chuckle turning my attention to Stevie.
"Mr. Buckingham will get you the bucket...Linds." Stevie smiles.
"Yes Steph, alright. Who's first?" I ask grabbing the bucket and walking over to the line.
"Me, daddy." Sara cheers at the front.
"And your name is?" I ask grabbing my clipboard.
"You know my name." Sara pouts.
"It's protocol," I reply.
"Sara R. Buckingham," Sara repeats.
"Sara with an H?" I question.
"No." She's getting angry.
"Alright, here you go." I give her the bucket.

Gameday and school ended, and Stevie goes on tour in six days. We're driving to San Francisco for Joey's birthday and then we're spending four days at my mom's before Stevie hits the road. Her first date is in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. According to her, they sold out and she's anxious about performing alone. We're going to watch it. Sara's excited but Mason could care less. I haven't even heard the album, so I don't know how I'm going to feel about it.

Pulling into my mom's driveway it's late and the kids had fallen asleep. I carried Sara and several of the bags. Stevie grabbed Mason and one small bag. My mom had been waiting up for us and when she saw the sleeping children she directed us to our rooms. Sara is sleeping in Jeff's old room and She is taking Mason. We set the kids up and head down the stairs.
"Hope the drive wasn't too bad." My mom says handing us some drinks. Me a water, my wife a thing of tea.
"I only got to listen to the DJ talk about how Bella Donna was beating Law and Order out in the charts. But stop Dragging My Heart Around and Go Insane keep fighting with each other as number one." I say.
"He's bitter." My wife smiles tapping her wedding ring set on the mug. I have yet to give her the new ring I bought her. Part of me is scared because I'm worried we're going to end in flames, but the other part knows it was custom made for her.
"It's just his nature." My mother smiles patting my cheek.
"I am a little bit bitter, but I'm glad my wife's album has been doing well since January," I state wrapping my arms around her.
"Now that I know my babies are home safe, I'm going to head to bed. Remember we leave for Greg's at noon." My mother scolds.
"Yes, mother." I sigh as she ascends the stairs.
"I told Meredith I'd make a dip. I'm going to raid the cupboards. If you want to go to bed you can. I know you've had a long day." Stevie smiles wrapping her arms around me.
She's right. My day started at the doctors, they have me going once a month to check on my epilepsy. Then I picked Sara up from the Byron's and we've been on the road since.
"I want you to come with me. You've been stressing for a week now. You can make your dip in the morning." I state
"Are you initiating something?" Stevie's eyes glimmer with what looks like a hint of hope.
Truthfully, the thought of sex with her is freaking me out. I know that she slept with two of the Eagles and that doesn't make it any better.
"No, just some innocent cuddling," I reply as her eyes dim.
I haven't had sex with her since she was about seven months pregnant, so over two years and I have grabbed, used, and disposed of several inconspicuous playboys. I don't know when my wife has last slept with anybody, but when she wants something she gets it. It was evident during a photoshoot right before she fell pregnant with Mason, her hand was practically on my dick. That night, while we were cuddling she kept trying to move my hand down to her crotch. She eventually gave up and rolled over.
***
During our nephew's party, she kept grabbing at my belt loops and keeping me pressed up against her.
That night while we're laying in my childhood bed she sat up and looked at me.
"Lindsey, why won't you have sex with me?" She's blunt, very blunt.
"Why...Stevie, we were separated for several months. Then I found out that you slept with two of the Eagles. With that in mind, it's kind of hard to get it up." I say blushing at my own embarrassment.
"Lindsey...March of 1980. The last time I had sex was March of 1980. It's been over a year. And you look so good." She groans.

"Well, it's been over two years for me. So, if you don't mind. I'd like to go to sleep." I express.
***
The night before she kicks her tour off, we are going out to dinner with my family, Stevie's family, and some people that she wanted us to meet.
"Mommy, do I have to wear this?" Sara asks pointing to the god-awful dress. Barbara sent it. It was homemade and its bright purple with a green bow on it.
"Yes, Nana made it and you're going to wear it and pretend you like it," Stevie states fussing with Mason's dress shirt.
"Steph, it's Toni's. We've been there on several dates, it's not that fancy." I groan.
"I know, but we're meeting important people," Stevie says.
Toni's was always my favorite. Their pasta is amazing, but their manager is my favorite. My mother, children, and wife and I arrive first. Then, Chris comes with Barb and Jess and then Finally our surprise guests show up.
"Everybody. I'd like you to meet my background singers. This is Sharon Celani and Lori Perry." Stevie announces as we go around the table and introduce ourselves.
Sharon is tall, lengthy, and tan with dark eyes and dark hair. Lori is short with red hair and hazel eyes. Chris was sat next to Lori and they hit off right away. Halfway through our meal, I asked the waitress to see the manager. The look on her face was priceless and I did feel bad but I was getting antsy.
"What's the prob...Lindsey Adams Buckingham?" Cal says walking up with the poor waitress by his side.
"Calvin," I answer standing up and hugging him.
"What brings you here Mr. Fancy Rock star?" Cal asks.
"The wife is making me have a nice dinner," I reply.
"Stevie Nicks!!" Cal looks at her. She stands up and gives him a kiss on the cheek.
"Hi." She smiles.
"So who is all here, I see Momma Ruth..." Cal points.
"Cal, this is my mom Barbara and my dad Jess. My brother Christopher my friends Lori and Sharon and this is our daughter Sara, and our son Mason." Stevie points.
"It's nice to meet you. I'm Cal I played Bass in Fritz." He states.
"What's Fritz?" Sara asks.
"When I was in High School, I was in a band. We called ourselves The Fritz Raybaum Memorial Band. My ex-girlfriend Jodi was the lead female singer, but she quit to go to college and Cal suggested calling your Momma because Cal heard her sing with me at a party after school one day. There was one problem though because Momma was in college as well. I had to talk her into joining." I explain.
"Before Fleetwood Mac?" Sara asks.
"Yes." Stevie smiles.
"MAMA!" The almost-two-year-old bangs on the high chair.
"Yes, Mason?" We all turn our attention to him.
"Getti." He pouts.
Stevie ordered the two children, kiddy plates of spaghetti. Contrasting her Chicken Alfredo.
"Mason you know how to eat." She says picking the discarded fork out of his pile of spaghetti
"No." He shakes his head.
"Take it," Stevie says holding out the fork to him.
"No." He repeats.
"Momma, I think he wants you to feed him." I chuckle.
"Oh, Mason." She sighs trying to feed him. He won't take the food.
"Are you done?" Stevie asks.
"Momma." He says.
She gives in and takes him out. But while she's wiping his face, he turns and face plants right on the left breast of her white dress.
"The one day you were something other than black." Christopher laughs.
"Yes, the perks of being a mother." Stevie pouts looking at the stain.
"I think someone is tired." Lori coos as Stevie brushes some strands of hair from his chubby cheeks. He needs a hair cut, his curls are wild and hanging down to his chin. I quite enjoy that both of our babies have brown curly hair, well Sara's Is more in waves but it still counts.
"Well enjoy your dinner. How long are you in town?" Cal questions.
"Stevie leaves tomorrow. I take the kids home on Sunday." I smile.
"Jam Saturday then?" Cal questions.
"Three o'clock my mom's place." I nod.
"Perfect." Cal shakes my hand walking away and I quickly turn the waitress.
"I am so sorry if I stressed you out. I have an idea of how scary it is when a customer asks for your boss. Cal and I have just been friends for a very long time." I state.
"It's alright. I was slightly terrified but I feel better now." She shakes her head.
"I bet, my wife was a waitress for a while so I got to hear all about it." I smile.
"It does suck doesn't it." Stevie pipes up.
"Yes, it does. I need this job my husband and I live in a horrid apartment." She blushes.
"We've been there. Thank you so much for your service tonight." Stevie chuckles.
As she walks away Stevie and I exchange a look.
"Yes Steph, I'm tipping her well." I sigh.
***
When Stevie wants something she gets it. She's on the prowl for sex. She knows I'm in the audience and the outfit she chose takes the cake. A white tight-fitting very revealing tank top with no bra and a short white skirt over fishnets. The way she's bouncing around on stage, she's practically falling out of her outfit. My prud-y wife would never wear that. The kids aren't really sure what's going on but when Stevie goes into Sara, our little girl starts singing along loudly. At the end of the show, Mason is asleep and Sara is bouncing off the walls.
"Sara Rhiannon...Sit down." I hiss.
"I want to see mommy." Sara pouts.
"We will in a little bit. You just have to wait." I sigh.
"Now!" Sara cheers.
"No," I state
She pouts but she goes and sits down. When we finally get to see Stevie she's changed into jeans and a long sleeve.
"Momma! You were amazing." Sara cheers.
"Thank you, baby." Stevie hugs her closely.
"You were good tonight, Angel," I say kissing her the best I could over our kids between us.
"What did you think about the songs?" Stevie questions.
"Edge of Seventeen is my favorite." I smile.
"Good." She grins back
"Mommy when are you leaving?" Sara asks.
"Miss. Nicks, it's time to go." A woman with black hair and blue eyes says walking into the room.
"Oh, Jenny. This is my family. Everyone this is my assistant Jenny Kamano." Stevie says.
"That's our puppies name." Sara laughs.
"Is it?" The woman questions.
"It is. Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie's husband." I hold out my hand.
"Nice to meet you. But we really need to be going." Ginny huffs.
"Alright, Bye baby I love you so much. Be good for daddy. Take care of your little brother. I love you." Stevie says pulling away from Sara and Kissing her head. She's too big for her to lift now.
"I'll miss you." Sara pouts.
"I know Sara. I'll miss you too. And I'll miss this cutie just as much." Stevie says kissing the sleeping toddler.
"By my dear," I say hugging her again.
Watching her drive off was hard, but part of me knows things are different this time.
***
The next day sitting in the living room with Cal, Sara is puttering around and picks up my acoustic. Cal and I are pulled away when she starts playing a melody.
"Is she taking lessons?" Cal asks.
"No, I haven't even taught her anything. But she does hang around the studio with me a lot. She's never picked up or played an instrument though. On one of her birthday's, Stevie couldn't get home and she sent her birthday present. A mini piano, she's never touched the thing." I shrug.
"She's a natural. She must get it from you." He chuckles.
"Sweet Girl, come here." I grab her attention.
"I'm sorry daddy." She shakes her head.
"No, no...you're fine, I'm not mad. I want to play with you." I tell her.
She smiles, grabs my guitar and runs over to me.
"Only six but you're a Buckinghamthrough and through." I chuckle as she smiles wide.
