《The Survivors Of Eden》Chapter 8

I smooth down my hair with a sigh, shifting uncomfortably in my seat in front of the camera. I've been taught my whole life to avoid cameras in order to minimize the evidence of my existence. Even now, I feel afraid in front of one. Or maybe that's just stage fright. Yarrow, however, almost feels a bit of a thrill thinking of the whole city seeing our face.
Part of my nerves comes from the fact that I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to say. I stayed up all night thinking and was still not able to memorize a clear monologue of what I wanted to say.
"Just tell them the truth. It'll be enough," Ash soothes me, taking my hand. He must be able to sense my anxiousness.
"I hope," I say, giving him a small smile. Carnelian finishes setting up the camera and tells the others to leave so I won't feel so uncomfortable. Ash, Flame, and himself are the only ones left behind the camera.
"You ready?" he asks. I nod and he signals me that the video has started. I clear my throat, shifting again, giving Ash one last awkward glance.
"Hello, citizens of Secundus. I am not an enemy to you. In fact, I am your friend and I want you all to know the truth. This might seem random but there is no better time to learn this but now. You are free. Every one of you no longer needs to stay in this city. There is a world out there, living, and ready to welcome you with open arms. You can leave now with your family and friends and start a better life out in the wilderness. And before you dismiss this, I want you to let me explain." I take a deep breath, preparing myself to sound crazy as Ash gives me a confident nod. It feels like when I told everyone about the forest after my surgery, feeling their judgment and skepticism. Except this time it's a whole city. "My name is Rowan and I am a seventeen-year-old girl from a city just like yours named Eden. Eden was corrupt, hateful against second children like me and many of you." I point to my second child eye. "And like you, we fought back against them. And yes, we won. But when we won we didn't seek revenge. We sought peace. And when I discovered there was life outside of Eden, I fought so everyone could be free. First and second child alike. And after the war, we were able to put the order of our birth aside and find forgiveness for our sins in a city called Harmonia. In Harmonia, we lived alongside nature as its child. It may seem hard to believe but nature is alive. It's waiting for you. And if you open your mind enough to just imagine the possibility...to question all the lies you've been told...that will be enough to start your fight to freedom. All hope is not lost. Remember this message and believe in it. Sincerely, your EcoPan."

I signal for Carnelian to stop the video. I stand, looking to Ash for feedback.
"You did great sis," he says as he kisses my cheek. "It was moving. I think you'll rock their world."
"I sure hope so. I hope it's enough to spark suspicion."
"We're gonna have a problem," Flame groans, rubbing her forehead as she looks at the computer screen. "I can't broadcast the video from this computer."
"Well, what kind of computer do you need?" Ash asks.
"It's not the kind of computer really. It's just this computer has no connection to the ones around it. I thought I could hack into the main programming or streaming platform but it's looking like this computer is separate from the rest. I'm going to need a computer with access to all the computers in Secundus."
"Well, what could that be?" Carnelian asks.
"It's going to be dangerous, isn't it?" I ask, taking a seat. "So much for getting in then out no problem."
"It means I need one of the computers that send out alerts like when a child goes missing. It needs to have access to all the technology... It means we need to break into Secundus's Center."

Homecoming | A Chronicles of Ascension Story
When Jethen was captured by slavers, his childhood was torn from him and left shattered half a world away. When he finds himself back home decades later, by methods he does not fully understand, he finds that the life he has lived has changed him far more than he knew. In a home he no longer knows. Places and people at the same time familiar and foreign, he must decide - stay and help with his parent's business, or return to the land that remade him and the family he made there. --------- Homecoming started as just a short story to break an episode of writers block. It has since morphed well beyond that into a novel in it's own right, and may well end up with a sequel. The writing of Homecoming became a bit of a self induced challenge to improve my initial, first brush, writing quality. Each chapter was written raw, given a once over read and edit, and then posted. In this way I am forcing myself to write better from the start. I do hope you enjoy the story and will leave a comment or review, and if you see an issue, feel free to let me know as well. I know it is not nearly perfect, and it will get a full and proper edit once I am done. Never hurts to fix things along the way though. As an additional note. The story has undergone a structural rework and has been reposted in an updated structure and sequence of chapters. If you have read this story already, I invite you to do so again in this new structure.

Post War Rules
Life on Torus Terminal is usually fast paced, but simple. A frontier Terminal has little room for easy living, but the great, circular station does boast shopping and culinary experiences from many Imperial races and cultures. Any star is, by its nature, extremely far from its neighbors. But laser highways, and the great shimmering sails of the light-rider spaceships make the trip into only about ten years. Still, the denizens of Torus Terminal eagerly await the day when the Anti-Euclidean Engine their station is built around finally comes online. Once that is done, they will have unfettered access to the entire Empire. Instantaneous travel and trade across hundreds of stars. Torus Terminal does boast one other oddity: a creature which calls itself Human. As he says, the last of his kind for now. He has made quite the life for himself on Torus Terminal, especially in the darker corners of the station. The elites of Torus Terminal praise his name, for once he took up arms, crime began to fall. What they did not realize was that was because he had claimed the seedy underbelly of Torus Terminal for himself and his own goals. The elites praise him as a paragon of law. The criminals fear him as a ruthlessly clever crime boss. Those closest to him, know him as the General. This story was originally posted on the Humanity Fuck Yeah subreddit, where it evolved from a simple play on a historical figure in a science fiction setting into a full blown space opera. I kind of took it as an opportunity to explore a setting I've had rolling around in my head for years. I also decided that it would be nice to have it in a place where I could more easily come back and edit it later, so I'm reposting it here. Here's a link to the original posting if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/e9cwpl/post_war_rules/ If my genre and tagging is subpar, let me know. I'm still new to Royal Road and I'm open to help. Feel free to comment and make suggestions, or discuss. I love comments, and so long as we keep things civil I also love criticism.

Knights of the Partition
We like to think there are no monsters. No magic, no gods, nothing waiting in the night but the stars and cold, hard science. It’s a comforting thought. It isn't true. Magic isn't common, mind you. Working forces is difficult in the Age of Man, and gods are limited in the ways they interact with the world. The great monsters of old have mostly been slain, or sealed away. But rare or not, the magic isn't gone. The great Working that protects us from the horrors of the past does not have the power to destroy such things. Instead, it created the Partition, a tapestry of worlds beyond the boundary of our own. There the magic roams, searching for a way to come back. I am a Knight of Avalon. One of the protectors of the Partition. How did I get this job? Poor decisions, mostly.
