《A Silence Full of Sound》Chapter 6

The school has been going crazy since we won the football match. Every time Sammy and Jake walk down the corridor there's at least twenty girls following behind. The boys had somehow grown a fan following over the last couple of days, and it was starting to get to Sammy's head.
As we walked down the corridor eyes stared. Girls gawked and fluttered their eyelashes at the boys. They pushed to even walk next to them, completely disregarding me and Alice in the meantime.
I was surprised how many dirty looks I had received for even just being around my brother. So many girls didn't understand our relationship, and it showed. They pitied Sammy for having to put up with the 'silent sister' as I had been commonly called.
"Oh Sammy, you're so great being so close with your sister, even if she doesn't speak."
"Oh Sammy, how do you manage to look after your sister and make it look so easy?"
"Oh Sammy, you truly are a brilliant brother for having to put up with the stress of your silent sister."
Sammy would disregard every rude comment and would argue with them but secretly it was true. I am an extra stress.
As the comments continued it was hard for me to ignore them. I started to believe everything that the girls were saying, and the worst thing was I couldn't tell my best friend about it. I couldn't tell Sammy, all he would say was 'just ignore them, Ri' or 'they just don't understand, Ri'. But maybe they knew more than we realised.
My thoughts were interrupted by a hand tapping on my shoulder and another waving in my face. Realising I was blanked out, I turned around to face the person in front of me.
"Riley, did you hear what I said?" Sammy stood next to me in front of my open locker.
I looked at him, giving him a 'really, did you just ask that?' face.
"You know what I mean." He said rolling his eyes. I chuckled. I loved to tease him. It's so easy.
"Anyway. The team's having a party tonight, me and Jake have been invited." He said. His face lit up with excitement.
I smiled and shrugged at him to show I was excited for him. I turned back to continue getting my books out of my locker, getting ready to leave for the walk home.
Sammy turned my shoulders around to face him. "You and Alice should come."
I gave him a look of confusion and panic. Yeah right that was going to happen.
I shook my head vigorously and turned back to close my locker door. The boy was was mad. Why would I go to a high school party?
He took both my books out of my hand and marched up to Alice and Jake who were waiting for us both at the end of the corridor, without a second glance at me.
I quickly followed after him an annoyed look plastered on my face.
By the time I had reached them, Sammy had already asked Alice. A smile had broken out on her face and she looked so excited.
She looked at me. "You're coming too, right Ri?"
I shook my head and turned to glare at Sammy.
"Hell yeah she is." He said, poking his tongue out at me as he pulled Alice and Jake down the corridor and out of the school gates.

I followed behind, knowing that there was no way I could get myself out of this.

Now when I tell you I have no clothes for a high school party, I mean I have NO CLOTHES.
Sammy had popped his head in and out of my room, asking me what I was wearing and how long I would be.
He had popped his head in not two minutes ago telling me he would be waiting for me downstairs. I hadn't even decided what I was wearing yet.
Alice and Jake were meeting us here and we would all leave together. They were getting here soon, and I wasn't even dressed.
Within seconds my room lit up from the light up doorbell, and I instantly knew that it was Alice.
Running downstairs in my robe, I pushed Sammy out the way who had got up to open the door. I flung open the door. Alice smiled but her face quickly turned into shock as she saw what I was wearing.
"You're not wearing a robe, are you Ri?" She laughed.
I grabbed her hand and pulled her up the stairs. Once we reached the room, I gave her a panicked look and pointed at my closet. I then fell back on my bed with my hands over my face.
I didn't know what to wear to a party. I had never been to one. What do people wear?!
I looked up at Alice, who stood in total shock, staring at me.
"Is this your first party?" She said coming to sit next to me; moving my arm that was dangling off the edge.
I took a deep breath and nodded.
I expected her to laugh at me. But she didn't. She stood up, brushing down her dress in the process. She walked over to my closet, looking at all the clothes I had hung in my new closet.
Within ten minutes, she had picked out an outfit and I was dressed. She had somehow found something beautiful and when I looked at myself in the mirror, I was speechless.
Alice's reflection smiled back at me as she stood behind me, helping me fix my hair.
"See, you don't need much to look beautiful Riley." She said as she pinned the final strand of my hair away from my face.
I turned around and hugged her so tight. I could feel her chuckle as she returned the hug.
We met the boys at the bottom of the stairs. In all the panic I hadn't noticed that Jake had arrived alongside Alice.
Sammy smiled as he saw me. "You look beautiful, Ri. Now can we go?" I smiled and punched his shoulder playfully.
Arriving at the party made my stomach turn. We arrived at the front door, and I honestly felt as if I was going to be sick.
Alice grabbed my hand, her arm linked in Jake's. "I'll see you in there." She said as she walked away with Jake. I smiled and nodded as I watched them walked away together.
"You got this." Sammy said as he linked his arm in mine. I smiled back up at him as we walked in the front door.
Everywhere you looked there were people chatting and dancing and drinking.
Somebody came up and gave Sammy a high five and a red cup. He smiled at me as he talked to Sammy. I stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.
I tapped Sammy on the shoulder and pointed to the red cup in his hands.

"In the kitchen, I think?" He said as the guy standing next to him nodded.
I pointed to myself then made a drink signal. Sammy nodded understanding, and I walked away to try and find the kitchen.
The whole house was scattered with people I had never seen before. There were people I saw who were in my classes, but a most people were new to me.
I pushed through and around as I tried to make my way to the kitchen.
I passed Alice who waved at me. She was standing with another guy, chatting. His face never once looked away from her. They looked very close and cosy. I looked over at Alice and gave her an eyebrow raise. Luckily she knew what I meant and nodded and smiled the biggest smile. I was happy for her.
She pointed me in the direction of the kitchen and I thanked her and left the lovebirds to their own devices.
The kitchen was like an extension of the room before. The counters were covered with discarded red cups and half empty bottles of alcohol. The lights made it somehow darker in the room and through the back window you could see people out on the garden lawn chatting and having fun.
It must have been loud in the room, because I could see people shouting into ears of the person they were with, or pointing as they tried to talk to each other.
For once I was grateful for my lack of hearing.
Retrieving a red cup full of what I hoped was soda, I wondered back into the busy living room.
Whoever owned this house had disco lights darting about. People were dancing, girls grinding on guys as they smiled and takes in each other's ears. With the lights it meant that only their silhouettes could be seen.
I was being pushed and shoved in every direction as I walked through. In the distance I could see Sammy and Jake in the corner, talking to some of their team mates; having fun.
In the other corner was Alice and that guy. Alice smiled and laughed as he said something funny; her hand resting firmly on his leg.
I didn't want to disturb them. None of them needed me hanging around.
I pushed my way out to the hallway; thankful that the crowd had diminished out there. Only a few people hung out by the door.
I suddenly had an urge to explore. I wanted to see the rest of this beautiful house.
Walking up the stairs, the vibrations from the music seemed to die down. I walked down the long corridor, past couples making out in what appeared to be a bedroom, and people throwing up in the toilet.
I decided the best place to stay was at the top of the stairs. Nobody would bother me there, and I could people watch everyone below in the party.
As I approached the stairs, there was someone who had the same idea as me. They sat, huddled over staring at the people below.
As I got nearer, I began to recognise the shaggy hair, pulled into topknot bun at the top of his head. Discarded strands hung below his ears, dangling just above his shoulders. His black hoodie hung close to his chest, and from a meter away it seemed as if he had been working out more.
As I sat down next to him, his eyes flickered to me. I waved.
"Hey." He said back, before returning his eyes to the people in the living room below us.
I waved a hand in front of his face. He looked back at me, I pointed down to the room, and made a questioning face.
"What am I looking at?" He guessed. I nodded, thankful that he understood.
"The football team. Everyone's in love with them, you know." He said pointing down to where a group of the football team were talking and laughing over beers. In amongst them was Sammy.
I scoffed and rolled my eyes as if to say 'tell me about it'.
He really stared at me then. Like his green eyes were peering right into my soul. I wanted to look away, but his mouth started to move before I could.
"Does it not bother you that everyone's in love with him?" he said, his eyes never leaving mine.
I gave him a questioning look. What was he talking about?
His stare was really making me awkward. I found myself looking for things to do rather than meet his gaze. It was then that I realised I still had my red cup in my hand. I took a swig, just to give me something to do.
"Your boyfriend." He said pointing down to the middle of football team huddle. I followed the direction he was pointing in. Sammy. He was pointing at Sammy.
The shock made me spit out my drink. Hunter looked at me with a very confused face, as if I had just grown another head.
He thought Sammy was my boyfriend.
My mind will never recover.
"I saw you arrive together, arm in arm." He said, trying to justify himself. I was frantically trying to wipe up the mess I had made.
He was still staring at me; confusion still evident on his face. I placed the remainder of my drink on the floor next to me.
I turned to look at him, shaking my head as fast as possible. He still looked confused.
I pointed down to Sammy, then at myself and shook my head.
"You're not together?" he guessed. I nodded my head, it nearly falling off at how vigorously I was nodding.
"You are?" I shook my head. This wasn't working.
I pointed down to Sammy and then pointed at myself. How could I explain it?
I pulled out my phone and typed the word 'brother'. Quickly showing him my screen and pointing to Sammy, I hoped that he would understand.
"Brother? He's your brother?" He said, even more confused.
I nodded, cringing at the fact that Hunter thought Sammy was my boyfriend.
An emotion flashed on his face, but it was gone before I could tell what it was.
"That's really awkward." He said chuckling to himself.
It was the first time I had seen him smile. I liked it. His face lit up with happiness as his mouth turned up at the edges. His smile was slightly crooked, it reached higher on the left side.
I smiled along with him, liking how it felt to laugh with him.
"Drink? Seeing as I made you spill most of yours?" He said smiling.
I nodded, and followed him down the stairs back into the kitchen.
I had no idea where the rest of the night would lead, but for my first ever high school party, it was doing alright.
