《The Fading Sunshine》Chapter 4

When I arrived at school it was time for everyone to eat lunch. Since I didn't have time to pack a lunch I walked to the club room to charge my phone for the remainder of the lunch period.
Soon my phone turned back on and my phone was flooded with missed messages and calls from the team.
I put away the phone and let it charge. They would see me at afternoon practice shortly anyways. I sat around the club room for about 15 more minutesbefore the bell rung to release everyone to their next class. I only had to go attend my math class before practice.
I struggled to stay focused during class and didn't remember anything I was just "learned".
But the bell rang and I could finally head to volleyball.
When I got to the club room, everyone was already changing. I walked over to my locker and was immediately bombarded with questions.
"Where were you this morning?" asked Noya and Tanaka. "Oh, I slept past my alarm, you know how it is." I said with a quiet laugh.
"Oh that's understandable, but don't let Daichi catch you sleeping in again or he'll make you run a lap every minute your late." Said Tanaka with a look of disgust on his face.
"Yeah you would know all about that, wouldn't you?" Chuckled Noya. "One time he had to run 18 laps, he hasn't been late since."
I laughed nervously, "I'll make sure to be more responsible."
I waited until everyone left before I started changing. I didn't want to risk anyone seeing my cuts and bruises today. I slipped off my school shirt and pulled my long practice shirt out of my bag. I decided to pack the long shirt today to cover my wounds.
Right as I was slipping my long sleeve on I heard someone yell, "HINATA, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?!"
**Kageyama's POV
I was in the gym warming up my sets when I realized I had forgotten to put my kneepads on. I ran back up to the club room to get them, but when I opened the door my jaw dropped. I saw Hinata, but his entire back and stomach were covered in black and blue bruises.

"HINATA, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED." He turned and look at me with wide eyes.
"I told you yesterday, I wiped out on my bike." He told me with a seemingly nervous laugh. "Well did you wreck again today, because not all of those were there yesterday." I asked, gawking at his side. "Y-yes actually I did. I should probably start w-watching where i'm going haha."
I looked him up and down, something wasn't right here. I don't know what it was or why he was acting so strange, but there was something he wasn't telling me.
"Yeah, maybe you should be more careful." I said scanning him up and down one last time. "Hurry up and get down to the gym so we can start practice."
"I need to keep an eye on him." I thought quietly to myself. "Somethings wrong with him and I don't know what it is, but I'm going to find out."
Hinata finally got changed and joined the rest of the us down at the gym. We immediately went into combo hitting.
I watched carefully as Hinata went up to hit and noticed he was a tad slower than usual, so I slowed down my sets just enough to give him enough time to do his approach. But he quickly noticed the speed change.
"Why are you setting slower than usual?" He asked with his head cocked to the side. "You just seem a bit tired and I don't want you to push yourself too hard." I told him in a caring tone. "Well, just because i'm a little tired doesn't mean you have to baby me."
I was shocked my how straight forward he was being. "I wasn't trying to baby you, I'm trying to keep you from hurting yourself."
"Well stop looking out for me, just treat me like everyone else here. If Tanaka was a little tired you wouldn't set him slower, so why are you treating me differently?" He said raising im his voice slightly.
I started to get aggravated. Could he not just be happy i'm looking out for him? "Because I worry about you more than the others." I said.

"You don't have to worry about me Kageyama, I can take care of myself!" He said raising his voice again. Why is he being so aggressive?
"Hey, whats wrong with you two?" Said Daichi as he walked towards us.
"Nothing." We muttered simultaneously while glaring at each other.
"Then get a move on it and let's get to work!" Daichi yelled.
"Hai!" We both yelled. Hinata turned and ran to the back of the line.
For the last 30 minutes of practice, we split in half into teams and scrimmaged.
We were in the lead 23-19, when Hinata went up for a broad quick attack. He hit the ball successfully, but ran into Asahi who was covering nearby. He let out a small yelp and held his side, buckling to the ground.
I ran over to try and help him but he flinched and hit my hand away when I touched his shoulder. "I-i'm sorry." he said with a shaky voice. He looked scared and I wasn't sure why, was it me that was scaring him?
"It's okay, just let me help you." I said worried. "NO! I mean... No, i'm fine. Really, I just scared myself when I collided with Asahi." He smiled and looked at me.
"Alright, but maybe you should get some water or something. You seen pretty shaken up."
"No, i'm ready to go. Let's hurry and finish the game."
We got our selves calmed down and finished the scrimmage game. We won 27-25. We were all out of breathe but somehow Hinata looked more rundown than the rest of us. The little ball of energy was bent over heaving trying to catch his breath.
**Hinata POV
"Alright everyone, huddle up. I have some news for all of you." Coach Ukai calles out to all of us. We all ran over and sat down, waiting to hear about the news that we were about to hear.
"Next week, Coach Nekomata invites us to some practice games. Nekoma, Fukurodani, and Aoba Johsai will be attending. We will need permission from your parents so see me before you leave to get the paperwork from the school."
My stomach dropped at the mention on paper work. That means I would have to ask my dad for permission and I wasn't looking forward to that.
I gathered my things and walked home with Kageyama. We said our goodbyes when the road split and I walked the rest of the way home. I walked up the drive way and sighed in relief when I didn't see my dads car.
I walked inside and went straight to my room. I did my homework and had a peaceful afternoon for the first time in a while. I got my shower, ate dinner and did my homework. I went to the bathroom to re-wrap the cuts on my arms. The sight of the cuts brought back the memories from last night. And along with the memories, can the voices I heard the night before as well.
⚠️⚠️⚠️ trigger warning ⚠️⚠️⚠️
"The car should've hit you. You should've done more to save them. It's your fault they're dead. It should've been you."
I held my head in my hands trying to block them out. Why can't the voices just leave me alone?!
I remembered that the remedy for the voices I used the night before. So I grabbed the razor and lifted my other sleeve.
I inhaled sharply and exhaled relaxed as the thoughts began to quiet themselves. I washed off the cuts and wrapped them up.
⚠️⚠️⚠️ trigger warning over⚠️⚠️⚠️
I walked back to my bedroom and checked my phone.
No new messages.
I sighed and laid my phone on the nightstand and rolled over on my bed. My eyes slowly closed and I slept peacefully knowing my dad wouldn't bother me for the night.

Dungeon Scholar
Girl meets dungeon. What could go right? A story of a good-hearted Scholar driven by her compassion and curiosity. She might be a little combat averse, but um, isn't that only logical? Love me a good grimdark, but sometimes I want to read feel-good fiction that isn't pure action, romance, or comedy. The plot and characters of Dungeon Scholar won't be all happy and fluffy, and the world will be more dungeons and monsters than rainbows and puppies, but overall the sweet moments should overshadow the bitter. Let's say three dollops of sugar for every pinch of salt, with lemon slices left on the saucers? Enjoy. Note: This is NOT a typical dungeon story. If you are here for the dungeon aspect, then fair warning this will seem incredibly slow-burn to you. The dungeon will eventually become the most important 'character,' arguably, or the second-most important narratively, but you might jump out the window in frustration long before that happens. At its heart, the story's core remains 'girl meets dungeon,' not 'dungeon meets world.' (To be clear, this does or will have a plot! It's just the more conventional story-like elements contribute to Rowena Loress's greater story, not the other way around; no conflict takes center stage until it becomes personally significant to her. Meanwhile, have some Slice of Life.) Updates every Friday Cover made using Waifulabs Written using 4thewords (referral code: UZJRY55368)
