《Dusk & Dawn》Chapter 12

6 Years Earlier
"Where do you think you're going in that?!" My mother screeched with her hands on her hips. I looked down at my secondhand runners, black leggings which I had gotten from the op shop and my flannel shirt.
"I'm going to school mum." I said, adjusting my broken backpack on my shoulder. It was pretty heavy because I had a lot of homework from the night before which needed to be handed in.
"Go back in your room and change. You are not wearing that. You look like a cheap hooker." She said eyeing me up and down with a disgusted look on her face.
"What's wrong with it? I'm all covered up... and what's a hooker?" I asked genuinely. I honestly didn't know what she was talking about.
"Those leggings are too tight and show off every single curve in your body. It's basically inviting someone to come and rape you. And that shirt! Your breasts are practically popping out of it! Go and change NOW!" she screamed at the top of her voice. She scared me more than I would ever let on.
"But, I don't have anything else that fits anymore mum. I've grown a lot in the last 6 months." I tried to say confidently but came out as more of an unsure statement. She snatched her keys off the bench and grabbed my arm hastily.
"Well we're going to the church donation bin now to get you bigger clothes. I will not have MY daughter dressing like a slut!" She fumed pulling me towards the front door.
I couldn't wait until I could pick up whatever I wanted out of my own closet and wear it out... but I couldn't see it happening any day soon.

"Come out Quinn, I'm sure you look fantastical." Lexi was trying to coax me out of the bathroom. I had locked myself in there for 45 minutes unable to step foot into the living room.

"Lex, I look easy. I don't wanna draw too much attention to myself." I called from the bathroom.
"I hate to break it to you babe but we're going to a club full of people and all eyes are gonna be on you. You're performing remember?" She laughed a little to lighten the mood. I sighed and straightened my long sleeved white cami which sat underneath a denim vest which plunged so low I couldn't wear a normal bra. My tops ended just above my bellybutton and my tight shorts started a little below. I looked into my smokey, made-up eyes urging myself to grow some lady balls and just get out of the bathroom.
I unlocked the door and lightly crept out into the living room where Lex was sitting on the edge of the couch waiting for me patiently. She was texting on her phone while bobbing her leg up and down nervously.
"Sorry for making you wait Lex. I'm just being a little baby. I finally grew a pair." I said holding my arms out for her to inspect, feeling a little guilty. Her mouth dropped and so did her phone. She made a little circling motion with her finger telling me to do a little spin. My hair was up in a side plait with light and dark blonde strands criss crossing over one another.
Lexi pulled down her bright yellow bandage dress as she got up off the couch and hugged me. I usually really didn't like being touched at all but getting a hug from Lexi, someone who knows me better than a lot of other people felt different. It felt like I had a sister who cared. The last hug I had ever gotten was from my 4th grade teacher after I had been thrown in a rubbish bin by a very large 6th grader.
"Quinn bee you are hotter than Satan's ass crack right now!" She said, eyes wide.

"Yeah, that doesn't sound too pleasant Lex." I laughed, adjusting my shorts cover more of my thighs.
"Okay well lets just say mucho caliente mami." Fanning herself enthusiastically.
"Do you even speak Spanish Lex?" I asked trying to hold down the laughter.
"As a matter of fact, yes. I was the top of the class in high school." She said brushing non existent dust off her shoulder.
"Uhuh, well I believe the saying is 'Muy Caliente' not 'Mucho Caliente' miss A+." She stopped and put her finger to my mouth.
"Shhh, don't ruin my moment walking thesaurus. Let me just check everything's covered." She said circling me knowing what I wanted to be hidden.
"My parents would so not approve of this." I giggled getting a little nervous.
There was a knock at the door and we both jumped.
"Maybe it's a serial killer Lex, maybe we shouldn't open it." I joked, trying to stall for as long as I could.
"Shit! Your gloves Quinn. Quick, go grab them!" We ran around each other like we didn't know which way to go. I scrambled to my bedroom and shut the door behind me as I heard Lexi greet the guys. I started flinging clothes everywhere trying to find my gloves. After it had looked like a nuclear bomb went off in my room I noticed my gloves sitting nicely folded on my bedside table.
Of course I find them staring at me after I rip my room apart.
"Quinn, you ready?" Lex knocked on my door.
"Uh, yeah, I'll be out in a sec." I slid my gloves on finger by finger, trying to control my shaking. For a work night this weirdly felt like a date.
"...and so I told him, go and get..." Lexi was rambling when I emerged from the bedroom and everyone went quiet.
"Woah." Mason said, his eyes roaming my body with a smile pulling on the corner of his mouth. I felt my cheeks flush and pressed my cold fingers against them to stop them from burning.
"I see you girls had a lot of fun while we were slogging it out in class." Zach laughed before he kissed Lexi and slapped her butt. She squealed upon impact and wiped the lipstick from his lips.
"You look so... beautiful." Mason said as he frowned a little, tensing his arm muscles slightly. His comment caught me off guard. Did he actually think I was beautiful or was he frowning because he was lying but trying to be polite? He was the most confusing guy ever. But then again I didn't have much experience in reading guys.
While Lexi rushed around getting her handbag ready, Mason and I stood together at the counter. He was wearing ripped jeans which hung low on his hips. His arms and pecs were hugged tightly by the white bonds shirt it took all of my willpower to keep my eyes away. He had spiked his hair in a haphazard way which accentuated his incredible blue eyes. He was without a shadow of a doubt the most physically attractive male I had ever seen.
"Let's put rubber to road ladies. We have a killer night ahead." Zach said picking up Lexi in his arms and throwing her over his shoulder. After I locked up we all walked down the hall through the dorms. I was nervous but also excited for tonight. It's the first time since I was 15 that I felt like i had more than one friend.
