《The LOVE of a BETA》Chapter 17: A Papa Sandwich

I never imagined the sound of a heart monitor could bring me such comfort. As long as I kept hearing it, I knew Sariah was alive. I place her tiny hand in my palm. It's pale and too skinny.
"Please baby girl, please wake-up. I promise I will never let you get hurt again. Just please wake-up for me" I say quietly looking for any change.
It's now ten-days since the attack. I have not left Sariah's side for the last two. Alpha Jack has continued to work with the trackers and Council members continue to try and locate Nero's base-camp. The obsessive need to find the base camp I held is gone. All I want is to be next to Sariah when she woke up.
"Papa" I hear a voice from the door. It's Gideon. I look over to see Caleb, Gideon, and Seth at the doorway. I smile as both Gideon and Seth come over and climb into my lap.
I brought in a bigger chair with a cushion, after about two hours of sitting on the plastic hospital chair my ass was sore and I could hardly stand. Glad I did, now I have room for my pups. I put one on each leg and feel their small bodies snuggle into mine.
Caleb hugs my shoulders from behind and his nose nuzzles my neck.
"I've missed you" he whispers.
"Me too" I say turning my head and giving him a kiss on the cheek.
"Have you eaten" he asks. I nod.
"You and the pups" I question. At least during my week of being a jackass I made sure Caleb ate.
"Yep. Cocoa Pebbles and bananas. Dinner of champions" he says proudly. I shake my head back and forth and chuckle. One thing about Caleb that I have never been able to figure out is his strange obsession with Cocoa Pebbles.
"I'm going to talk to Brian and will be back in a few" he states standing back up and walking towards the door.
Brian was just here a half-an-hour ago giving me an up-date but I knew Caleb would want to speak with him directly. It helps calm his nerves.
"When is Sariah going to wake-up Papa" Gideon asks looking up at me.
"Soon I hope" I respond giving him a smile. "It's late. You two rest. I'll wake you if anything happens" I say looking a two-pair of green eyes filled with worry.
I pull them closer to me and feel their heads rest against my chest. My heart sinks a little when I realize that something is missing...not something but someone. During these months, me and the pups have started our own tradition. When Caleb works on a Friday or Saturday night, we have movie night. The pups pick a movie and we pig out on popcorn, juice, and candy.

I am usually awoken by Caleb the next morning with Gideon and Seth sprawled over my lap with their arms and legs twisted around each other. Sariah has her hands around my neck with her head nuzzled under my chin. Her legs are somewhere in the mess of limbs on my lap. Seth started calling it a 'Papa Sandwich.'
Those times we have together have grown precious to me. Seth's loud snoring and Gideon's now heavy body tell me that both are asleep.
"That was quick" I hear Caleb whisper as he walks in. He turns off the overhead light so the only light in the room is coming from over Sariah's bed.
I smile looking at my tired-looking mate.
"Lay down love" I say nodding over to the bed. He nods climbing into the bed.
"I can take one of them" he offers.
"Not a chance. You need your sleep and these two are like ninjas in the night. The pups in your belly don't need to be picked on by their older brothers quite so soon" I smirk.
"True" Caleb laughs.
I push back my chair so Sariah's bed is on my right and Caleb is on my left. I pull Gideon closer so his weight is against my chest. My hand reaches over to the bed and I put my rather large hand around Sariah's. I do the same with Seth. My finger intertwines with Caleb's and he gives me a squeeze.
I close my eyes as I lean back my head listening to the heart beats that are my whole world.
My eyes slowly flit open hearing the sound of squeaky voices.
"Shhhh...don't wake up Papa" I heard a little voice say. Even though I wasn't fully awake, my sore neck was screaming at me to move.
More giggling...fills the air. Focusing on the voices, I can hear Gideon, Seth...SARIAH!
My eyes fly open and I jerk my body out of the chair. I look down to see Gideon, Seth, and Sariah sitting on the hospital bed looking up at me giggling.
She's awake...
I went to reach for her but stop. Her eyes were open and she was smiling but would I hurt her. I look around and see Brian and a nurse at the end of the bed.
"Just don't squeeze her too tight" Brian chuckles.
I reach down, pick Sariah up, and pull her too me. He body feels so much smaller than before. Her arms go slowly around my neck and she lays her head on my shoulder. The once tight grip that she would have around my neck is now weak. I cringe thinking how her body must have suffered.

"I am so happy to see you baby girl. You scared us" I whisper in her ear.
She slowly pulls back and looks up at me smiling, "is the dancing over" she asks. "I wanted to dance with you Papa. Why are we here and not at home? Gideon says my hair looks funny."
My heart jumps hearing her voice. "I promise that you and I will dance at every pack party from now on. Your Dad and I will tell you later why we are here, and no, your hair does not look funny, it looks beautiful" my voice trembles trying to stop the tears that threaten to fall.
"Why you sad Papa" she asks tilting her head.
"I'm not sad, I'm just really happy to see you baby girl" I answer smiling.
"How about we wake up your Dad" I ask nodding my head over to a snoring Caleb. Her eyes got big and she nods.
I sit down on the bed next to Caleb and situate Sariah on my lap.
"Caleb...Caleb...love. Wake-up" I urge him rubbing his arm trying to rouse him.
He gives out a loud groan that has Sariah giggling.
"You really loud when you sleep Dad" Sariah says with a giggle.
It took only a moment for Caleb to register her voice. His eyes snap open and he sits up in bed. Sariah crawls into his arms and he wraps his arms tightly around her. Letting them have some time, I stand and make my way over to Brian.
"Thank you Brian" I tell him shaking his hand. He nods and smiles.
"How long has she been awake" I ask.
"It's eleven o'clock now, so about four hours" he responds.
My eyes went wide. "Why didn't you wake us" I questioned angrily.
"We tried but you didn't budge and Caleb's snoring just got louder. I gave the kids my tablet to try and drown it out" Brian smirks. It's true...when I'm really tired, I snore loud. Although Seth by far is the loudest of us all.
"Does she remember anything" I inquire hoping her little mind has forgotten that horrible night.
"She says the last thing she remembers is dancing and then hearing howling. The serum that Nero used probably knocked her out quickly. She was essentially asleep thru the whole thing" Brian answers thoughtfully.
"Thank Goddess for that" I quietly state.
I hear loud giggling from behind me causing me to turn to find Sariah back between Gideon and Seth. They are probably watching Paw Patrol, it's her favorite.
"Brian—thanks for everything" Caleb says as he approaches us. I put my arm around his waist and pull him to me giving him a quick kiss on the lips.
"She'll need some physical therapy and her diet will need to be advanced slowly. We gave her chicken broth with a protein supplement this morning and she was able to tolerate it. I'd say if she tolerates lunch and dinner and everything looks stable this evening, you should be able to take her home tomorrow morning" Brian informs us.
Before we could respond, Alpha Jack links Caleb and I.
I looked over to Caleb who smiles and gives me a nod letting me know that it was okay to go.
On my way.
Caleb—are you up for some visitors. Felix and the boys want to come visit.
I walk over to Sariah and lean down giving her kiss on the cheek. "I've got to go do some Beta work but will be back soon baby girl" I tell her.
"Boys...be good" ruffling both Gideon's and Seth's hair.
"We will" they answer.
On my way out I pulled Caleb into my arms. We held each other for several minutes letting our bodies feel a calmness we hadn't felt for some time.
"I'll be back as soon as I can" I say giving him a deep kiss. I run out of the hospital and into the forest. I shift and quickly head towards the lake.
Something tells me we are not going to like what we find. Zeus seethes.
We are going to a rogue camp. Of course we aren't. I answer sarcastically.
No. There is something else, something much worse. I can feel it.
I ran faster and hope Zeus was wrong. Deep down...I knew he wasn't.

Blood Demon's Retirement
Civil War had raged on the Al-Shan Archipelago for the past four decades, only recently coming to an end with the enthronement of the new Emperor. This is not his story. The Blood Demon, renowned general of said civil war, was tired of all the fighting and politicking that had described the last four decades of her existence. All she really wanted to do now is to go out into the world and see the many lands from her father's stories. Thus she retired, and went and did exactly what she wanted. This is the story of what happens when you toss a (retired) war machine with somewhat lacking common sense into an unsuspecting world at peace. Chapters will range from 1-2.5k words, scheduled for release every day from Monday to Friday. First time posting a story on Royal Road here, hoping you folks will enjoy. Expect: -slow going slice of life with occassional faster paced action -world building -detailed anecdotes on the world, its races, the magic system, and whatnot every now and then Do not expect: -romance, other than maybe some passing mentions -politics, again, barring passing mentions Any comments, reviews, and criticism will be much appreciated. And thank you for reading. ---------------------------- Disclaimer: This story is my original work and only posted on the Royal Road and Scribblehub websites. Saga of the Jewels VOLUME ONE COMPLETE
Prefer to listen to rather than read Saga of the Jewels? I'm also releasing it as a free audibook serial podcast on iTunes here! Epic YA JRPG-influenced GameLit progression ensemble-cast steampunk romance fantasy! When Ryn’s hometown is destroyed, will he be able to gather together the twelve Primeval Jewels in order to defeat the evil Emperor and save the world of Mid? A fan novelization of an amazing Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist, that currently releases at least one chapter a month. Epic in that this will be very long. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint!” (-Kandaj) YA in that this should be enjoyable to~13-year-olds and upwards. Some gore, some swearing, some sex, but nothing more than PG-13. JRPG-influenced / GameLit in that it uses lots of JRPG tropes, particularly from Final Fantasy. I’ve read a lot of fan Final Fantasy novelisations and you can basically think of this as a fan novelisation of its own Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist as a game... Progression in that the characters level up over time (though not with visible litrpg stat boxes). They grow in ability through training and experience, gain new skills, individually and as a party (think Chrono Trigger) and spend time discussing and stratgeising about how to defeat their opponents. Main protagonist from book three would definitely be able to defeat himself from book one! Ensemble-cast because we've got quite the roster of misfits here. The first volume is all from the main protagonist's POV, but it starts dancing between his and different POVs thereafter. Steampunk in that we’ve also got airships, steam trains, pistols and ambiguous ‘amber bars’ that function a bit like artificial lights… Romance in that there is lots of shipping here, a few love triangles, and you may be kept guessing as to who will actually end up together... Fantasy in that we’re in a vaguely pre-modern setting. We’ve got swords, magic, dragons, dungeons, monsters, all that good stuff. * "This story captures that Final Fantasy quality perfectly. Kiddy but also grim. The characters are great... Severely underrated and needs more favorites/follows. I look forward to seeing how this story will unfold." -Gilgamesh9999 "Starting at the end and jumping backwards is not a writing style seen every day. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but you've executed a fairly crazy idea very skillfully so far. Overall, a strong start to what could be a very strong story." -RandomFF.netUser "You definitely have my interest piqued. It'll be interesting to see where the story goes... It definitely has an 'old school Final Fantasy' type feel to it, which I appreciate...Good job! I am glad you are going into more details about the story you laid out in the prologue...of course the big burning question is 'You know they lose in the the first chapter, so how will they end up winning?' That of course, is the story you're writing...so we'll see how it goes! #Following." -KyleQuicksilver (quotes are from reviews on other sites) * If you enjoy it, don’t forget to boost Saga of the Jewels on topwebfiction.com!
