《Harrisons - The Last Chapter》Chapter Thirty-Six: A Sweet Welcome

A week went by since Owen was brought back home. Although his health was continuously deteriorating but felt better than he did throughout his treatment. He had all his family here. His grandkids, daughters-in-law, and even Silas's dog were here. It felt like home. Owen is too weak to get out of his bed, but he likes to hear Kathie play, while Ella and Ezra babble a lot. He is too sick to carry them, but Silas and Marcus often sit beside him with the kids while Owen watches them.
His kids have arranged a caretaker for him, but that was useless because no matter how much Owen asks his kids and daughters-in-law, they never listen and are always around him – helping him, feeding him, giving him his medicines, and everything. They all even have dinner in Owen's room each night as a family, because he can't come to the table – he can hardly make it to the bathroom on his own – his sons are always there to help him. Moments like this make him thankful for the beautiful life he had spent with his family, but it also makes him sad that he will not be able to watch his grandchildren grow old.
Today, Leo was flying to London along with Liam. Elizabeth already talked with her family before the two arrives. She told them that she has been thinking about asking Leo to legally adopt Liam. She told Owen that she had asked Leo to bring Liam here, especially so he could meet her father. Owen couldn't be prouder of his daughter. Owen was lucky to see Elizabeth grow into such a responsible and considerate woman.
Elizabeth has always been a person who was afraid of commitments. She didn't like children. She didn't think she would be having her own – but things changed as she spend more time with her nieces and nephew – and then everything got more prominent to her when she met Liam. She doesn't think she is still that close to the boy, but she knows that he has a special place in her heart and she doesn't want to see Liam live with some other family.
"Guys, remember, when Liam comes here – please, make him feel welcome and PLEASE, don't overdo it. He is just ten, but I swear he is too smart. He will catch on to it. Just don't make him feel like he is new here, make him feel like he has always been a part of us, okay?" She asked everyone in the room.
"Okay," Everyone replied in a union.
Marcus chuckled as he witnesses his sister getting anxious over Liam. Charlie, who sat beside Marcus, looked at him and nudged him with her elbow. Marcus looked at Charlie who was shaking her head at him, "Don't laugh, she is very nervous. You will make it harder for her." She whispered. Marcus smiled and sighed before he glanced at Elizabeth who was lecturing Silas about something while Silas rolled his eyes at her and Maria laughed. "It is funny for things evolved for Elizabeth. First, it was just her – she had to come first. Then she met Leo, and everything was about him and now, Liam. She didn't even talk about Leo once. I like this Elizabeth," Marcus pointed out.
Charlie smiled and nodded her head. Marcus was right. Elizabeth has changed – especially since she met Liam and started to spend more time with him. "I, honestly, never thought I would see Elizabeth care for a child like this. She has always been so afraid of having one but just look at her now. She is slowly starting to embrace motherhood. I am happy for her," Charlie replied to which Marcus smiled at her and wrapped his arm around her shoulder while Charlie rested her head on Marcus's shoulder and sighed. She wished she could pause their lives once Leo and Liam get here. No one leaves. No one to be missed. No one to be cried for. She can only wish...

In the evening, Leo and Liam finally arrived in London. Leo was nervous to make Liam meet the Harrisons – he doesn't know if Liam will be accepted into the family. Only if he knew how excited everyone was to welcome Liam into the family. Liam was more nervous than Leo. When they reached Harrison's residence – Liam held onto Leo's hand and refused to let out. He hid behind Leo as they walked inside. "It will be fine, Liam. They are good people. You will like them," Leo told Liam as he ruffled his head – while hoping his words are true. He knows Harrisons are good people, indeed, but Liam is Mia's son – he doesn't know if they will accept a child into the family whose mother is in prison for attempting to hurt Elizabeth.
Liam didn't speak. He hasn't been talking much since Sharon's death. For the entire week, Leo has been trying to communicate with him as much as he could, but Liam doesn't talk much. Elizabeth also tried to talk to him on the phone as well – but his responses to her were also limited, but she ensured Leo that Liam will feel at home when he comes to London.
"Liam!" Leo and Liam both looked at Elizabeth as she rushed toward them. She quickly kneed in front of Leo and embraced Liam in a tight hug. "Oh, thank God you both are here. I missed you so much," She said as she hugged Liam tightly. Leo chuckled as he watched Liam hug her back – he didn't mind being ignored – he was witnessing a beautiful moment after all.
"I missed you too. It is very quiet when you are not there," Liam spoke for the first time since they landed in London. Elizabeth chuckled and pulled away. Her eyes were glossed. Leo knows that she is holding in her tears for Liam. She held the boy by his shoulders, "I know, right? This guy doesn't like to talk at all. He is very boring," She whispered to Liam – pointing at Leo, who smiled back at Elizabeth. Leo felt his heart would burst with happiness when he saw Liam smile. He thought Liam had forgotten how to smile. He hasn't done that in days. It was refreshing to see him smile again.
"Hello," Leo lifts his gaze to look ahead to see Marcus walking toward them with a smile on his face. He was wearing a sweater over jeans. It was cold in London because it was raining all night long. Leo offered him a small smile and looked down at Liam, to see him take a couple of steps back. Liam watched as Elizabeth got on her feet as well and waved her arm towards Marcus, "Liam, this is Marcus. This is my oldest brother. You met him at Uncle Silas's wedding, remember?" She asked – to which Liam shyly nodded while hiding behind Leo again.
Marcus smiled at Liam, "Hello, Liam. It is so good to have you here. Come on in, everyone is waiting for you. They are all so excited to meet you," Marcus spoke to Liam, who wordlessly hide his face in Leo's leg.
Leo looked at Marcus and smiled, "Thank you, Marcus. He is just very shy." Leo tried to reason, to which Marcus waved his hand dismissively, "Ah, every child is when they meet someone new. Kathie is the same," He replied. Leo smiled at the memory of meeting her for the first time. She was very shy as well. "Come on in," Marcus said while putting his hand on Leo's shoulder.

Leo didn't expect this. Everyone was around Liam like he was the only child there. Marcus had ought him chocolates. Silas was talking to him about video games – since he likes to play as well. He even planned to play some with Liam after dinner. Charlie had baked them some cupcakes. It didn't look like Liam is an outsider and surely the smile on Liam's face was evidence that he felt at home too. Leo couldn't believe he was overthinking every aspect so much – when introducing Liam to Harrisons was so simple.
"It is an easy game. You just have to be strategic. One of these days I can show you how to play that." Liam chuckled at something Silas said about one of the video games. Elizabeth smiled and glanced at Silas, who also looked at his sister, impressed by this kid. Liam was a bit too mature for his age, but that is not a bad thing. Silas was having fun talking to him.
Leo wordlessly noticed how Liam started to talk like he normally did as soon as he got here. He didn't think Silas would be the one, Liam would connect to most. Since Silas likes to play video games and so does Liam – they started to bond on that and in no time – Liam forgot that he was meeting many of these people for the first time. "He is quite at home," Leo turned to see Maria sitting beside him. He chuckled and nodded his head, "I know, right? I didn't think he would blend in so easily," He replied.
Maria smiled and playfully nudged her brother with her elbow, "That's because you still a bit biased when it comes to the Harrisons," She shrugged. Leo knows Maria isn't wrong. Leo does always assume the worse from them and each time they prove him wrong. Leo softly chuckled and nodded, "Yeah, I get it." He didn't even deny it. There was nothing to deny for him. Leo glanced at Elizabeth who was helping Kathie color inside the line while she kept on glancing at Liam and Silas from time to time, but not once did she look at him. Leo heaved a sigh, "Do you think she is still mad at me?" He softly asked his sister.
Maria chuckled, "Maybe a little, but she is more concerned about Liam than being mad at you. You should talk to her soon – apologize again." She replied. Leo nodded his head, "I am planning to do that," he mumbled. He glanced at Maria. He hasn't told anyone about his plan of proposing to Elizabeth. He is still struggling if he should do it here, or maybe wait for later – since right now might not be the right time to do it. But even though he waits to ask her to marry him – he still needs to ask Owen.
"Do you think I can see Owen now?" Leo asked Maria. She nodded, "Yes, sure. Let me check if he is awake and then you can see him. He will be happy to meet you and Liam. He was excited to see you both," Maria replied.
Owen was sleeping when Maria went to check on him, but soon he woke up and asked to see Leo and Liam alone. Leo could see that Liam was once again nervous, but he was feeling at ease. He was certain Owen will welcome Liam with open arms, and he was right. As soon as Leo and Liam walked in, Owen smiled at them. "Oh, look who is here." Owen weakly chuckled as he tried to sit straight. Leo was stunned to see how weak Owen has gotten – he almost didn't recognize him. When he noticed how Owen was struggling, he quickly helped him and fixed the pillow behind him. "Thank you, Leo. How are you doing?" He asked.
"I am good. How are you?" Leo asked. Owen chuckled, "Just waiting for the end. I can sense it. It is near." He replied. Leo shook his head, "Don't say that." He mumbled, but couldn't see in his eyes. As a doctor, he knows that Owen is right, but he didn't have the heart to say it. Owen waved his hand dismissively, "Forget about it. What is bound to happen will happen. Introduce me to this charming oy here," Owen averted his gaze to Liam, who politely smiled while standing behind Leo.
"This is Liam." Leo smiled at Liam and put his hand on his small shoulder, "Liam, this is Owen. He is Elizabeth's father." He told the kid, who quickly waved his hand at Owen. Owen chuckled and waved back at him, "Hello, Liam." He said.
Liam glanced up at Leo before he looked at Owen, "Hello –," He paused. He wasn't sure what was he supposed to call him, so he bit his lip and added, "Hello, Mr. Owen." He softly spoke. Owen laughed weakly, "Oh no, call me grandpa. My grandchildren call me that." He corrected him.
Leo's eyes widened. He did not expect that. "Um, but you are not my grandpa." Liam perplexedly reply, to which Owen shrugged, "Here in our home, we don't only rely on blood relations, Liam. You like a child to my daughter and Leo – so that makes me your grandpa, no?" He explained. Liam thought about it before he slowly nodded his head, but didn't reply to Owen. He still didn't seem too sure.
Where else Leo stared at Owen. He didn't think Owen would be so welcoming at the first meeting. Owen could see how surprised Leo was. He chortled, "Don't e so surprised, Leo. We are not as bad as you think we are." Owen said. Leo quickly shook his head, "No, it is not that – it is just –" He paused and looked at Liam, "Um, Liam – how about you go back and continue your conversation with Silas about that game." He told Liam. Liam's eyes glinted, "May I leave?" Liam asked Owen.
Owen smiled, "Of course, Liam. Feel at home, kid. And come to me if you need anything, okay? Do not hesitate. This is your home as well." Owen told Liam before Liam happily nodded and rushed out of the room – closing the door behind him. Owen heaved a sigh as he watches the door close, "Ah, he is a precious child. I am proud of you and Elizabeth for taking him in. I am glad he will be a part of our family, Leo." Owen spoke with pride.
Leo blinked. So many emotions rushed through his head. He gulped and lowered his eyes. He felt a lump in his throat, "I – you all are so – I have no word to describe how amazing you have been to me and now to Liam, knowing that he is Mia's child." Leo spoke. Owen shrugged, "So, does that make him evil too? No, son, if that was the case that we would have been the worse family – knowing what my wife did to your sister – to her own son. Liam is not Mia. Exactly the way, Silas is not Ruby." Owen added.
Leo looked at Owen to find him smiling at Leo. Leo gulped and nodded his head. Owen is right. Leo has always been hard on Silas and sure he once deserved it, but Leo dragged it a bit too long. He sighed. "I understand that. I know that." He quickly added. He looked back at Owen, "Owen, I need to talk to you about something as well," Leo spoke hesitantly.
A slowly grin curled on Owen's lips, "I hope it is about asking my daughter to marry you," He spoke. Leo immediately looked at Owen. He gaped. Leo was amazed that Owen figured it out. Owen could see Leo was amazed, to which Owen laughed, "I thought so," He replied.
