《White Lies || Scaramouche X Reader》Chapter 20 - Resume Training

《Your POV》
As you started to wake up, you could hear the faint raindrops lightly hit your roof. You thought it must have rained all night as well. You slowly say up, rubbing your tired eyes. To your right was an empty spot. You could've sworn you went to bed with Scaramouche last night. Perhaps you were too tired so you dreamt it all?
Then again, he was a harbinger, he probably had business to attend to. You internally laughed at yourself for thinking he'd be able to spend all his time with you. Being a harbinger meant he at least had tons of money. That was a plus.
As you sat in bed, gazing out your raindrop filled window, you began to think about the last few weeks.
You really had changed, you weren't just imagining it. You were in a relationship with the enemy, and not only that, the people who were responsible for your mother's death.
Of course you couldn't ever forgive the Fatui for what they did to her, but you couldn't help it. There was something about Scaramouche that was so enticing. You couldn't quite explain it.
Though you were so infatuated with him, you knew the downsides. For one, it seemed odd how he acted so differently around you than everyone else. Second, he had some weird superiority complex thing going on, which you seemed uneasy about. And lastly, he hated being defied. He wanted to be in charge constantly and, so you were told, he had a very disagreeable personality. Scaramouche wasn't lying when he said his colleagues hated him. His personality sucked. But not around you of course.
It made you wonder; what would happen to you if you ever defied him? What if you went against his will at a bad time? Would he forgive you or would he draw the line and do who knows what to you?
You merely shivered at the thought. You truly hoped that day would never come, but for some reason, you felt it in your heart that it would.
There would be a day where your relationship is hanging in the balance, and one wrong move on your part will cause Scaramouche to leave you behind, or worse..

You thought it'd be a good idea to stop scaring yourself and get up for the day. Hoping the rain would stop later on, you planned for yourself to maybe accept a few new commissions.
Your recent mood had been better ever since Scaramouche showed up, so you thought you'd go and make some money while you're in a good mood.

"Y/N??" Kathryne questioned as you walked up to the adventure's guild self-consciously.
"Hello Kathryne.." you replied. It felt like it had been forever since you last had a real face to face conversation with someone who wasn't Scaramouche. After all, you sort of held yourself up in your house for 2 weeks.
Kathryne greeted you with a smile, "It's been so long! Where have you been these past few weeks?"
You gave her a nervous laugh, "Personal stuff, I suppose." You weren't wrong, you were going though a lot of personal issues as of late. She didn't need to know all the details though.
"I'm assuming you're here for work?" She said, but without letting you answer, she handed you a few pieces of paper, "Here's a few smaller jobs. You probably want to start off easier since you took a long break."
While she wasn't wrong, you couldn't help but feel like that wasn't why she gave you easy commissions. A part of you felt that the guild didn't trust you fully. Whether it be actual trust issues or just lack of faith in your combat abilities, the guild did not want you taking on hard jobs.
This was the reason you got upset back when you found out Aether was taking on your commission. And the reason why you wanted Scaramouche to train you.
Speaking of Scaramouche, as you walked away from the guild with the papers in your hand, you couldn't help but to wonder what he was doing. It was strange, thinking about one specific person all the time. It's like your mind never got the image of him out of your head. He was always on your mind.
As distracting as it might've been, it actually helped you find the motivation to keep at it. You remembered all the things he told you, and though they seemed cheesy, you really took them to heart. Scaramouche was right, if you wanted to show the guild you were just as skilled as the Traveler, you had to put in the effort.

And that's just what you were going to do.
《Scaramouche's POV》
Scaramouche stood in a field of grass with a few other Fatui soldiers, just outside Mondstadt. They were all in sync with one another, it's as if their fear for Scaramouche made them become statues.
Yet honestly, most of them thought he had become a bit.. nicer. While he still would snap at them and make them feel inferior, he hadn't really yelled all that much, which was definitely weird.
While you'd think the soldiers would be relieved, it scared them more than anything. Was he broken?? Did they somehow drive him to insanity??
Scaramouche finished speaking to one of the higher ranked soldiers, then he turned to the group. It seemed like he had just been given news that he wasn't happy about at all. They all immediately stood perfectly still. This made Scaramouche feel quite amused with himself.
He sighed, "Change of plans. All of you will go with Childe and travel northwest towards Liyue, effective immediately. Move out."
Soon after, the soldiers were on their way. Scaramouche could see Childe and his group in the distance. Even from afar, he couldn't stand Childe. The thought of him just made him gag.
Scaramouche sighed. He desperately wished he could go see Y/N. He at least wished he was able to say good morning to them, but he had to leave in such a hurry. Being in a relationship really was hard, especially being a harbinger.
Fatui harbingers were always busy. He felt like he never got any downtime, and when he did, he never knew how to spend it. But now he had Y/N.
All he wanted to do was be with them, hold them, talk to them. But at this moment, he couldn't. It's as if there was a barrier keeping him from putting his all into his relationship. He started to doubt himself as a boyfriend. It took a lot for Scaramouche himself to have such doubts, but there he was, practically drowning in self doubt.
Suddenly, he heard someone call out to him.
"Scaramouche?"
He turned around to see Y/N. How long had he been standing there? He honestly hoped they hadn't been there the whole time.
"Y/N!" Scaramouche happily walked up to them, "What brings you here?"
They held up a few pieces of paper, "Commissions. And what are you doing here standing alone?"
"Uh," he looked around expecting to see a few soldiers but they were all gone. He had sent them away to go with Childe, "Just.. working. You know, harbinger stuff."
Y/N looked around as well, "Right.."
It grew very awkward, so Scaramouche tried to break the silence, "I'm sorry I had to leave so abruptly this morning. I woke up later than I wanted to."
"It's alright, you're busy, I get it," they said, a genuine tone in their voice. He always loved that side to them. Their gentle and caring voice never failed to make Scaramouche feel better.
In attempt to lighten the mood, Scaramouche leaned over, looking at the papers Y/N was holding, "What kind of jobs did you get?"
"Oh uh.. just simple delivery jobs, nothing too exciting."
He looked at Y/N, who was averting their eyes. He could tell they felt ashamed for having such lame commissions.
Scaramouche placed his hand on their shoulder, "Hey, while we're here and I have some free time, why don't we continue your combat lessons from last time?"
"What about the commissions-" they started.
"You can do them later. If they ask, just say you got held up with some troublesome Fatui." Scaramouche said with a wink, which made Y/N blush a bit.
He swiftly snatched your sword from around your waist and pointed it at you, "I'll make sure the whole of Mondstadt knows how skillful you are with a sword by the end of this!"
Y/N gently smiled at his enthusiasm as they took the sword from him, giving him a determined expression.

It wasn't something that just magically came together. It took time and effort for them to get to where they are, and I respect that. It taught me more about how to look at things so thanks a lot for making this book. I meant a lot to me. I will definitely read the sequel and your other books" - Generik_Jay
