《Secret Love (Jolby)》Red Cheeks

The annoying sound of his alarm clock woke him up at 7:30 the next morning, and Colby had to force himself out of his comfortable bed. After checking his phone for a few minutes, Colby started his day by taking a quick shower — wanting to wake himself up a bit more before he has to start packing.
With water still dripping from his hair, Colby picks up his phone and calls Jake to wake him up; knowing Sam, this trip is a surprise for both Corey and Jake. After waking up a grumpy Jake, Colby calls Corey to tell him to start getting ready. Satisfied with his calls, the dark haired man starts to pack his duffle bag; he sighs as he stares at his closet with confusion. With a smirk on his lips, Colby picks his phone up again to call Sam.
After a couple rings, Sam finally picks up the phone, "Yes, Colby?" He says into the phone, his voice filled with amusement.
Colby sighs, "Hey, I just thought I would call you t-to check up on you. . . ?" He stumbles over his words as he blushes. Colby hears his best friend chuckle, "Just pack a few pants, and sweatshirts. Make sure to pack your soaps, I don't want you using mine again." He explains before saying a quick goodbye — and a 'You're welcome' — before hanging up the phone. Colby's blue eyes widen as he stares at his phone, shocked that Sam knew exactly why he was calling him. With a simple shrug, Colby gets to work on the instructions that Sam gave him.

It isn't long before it's time to head over to Jake's apartment, and Colby can't help but feel nervous. The events that unfolded the night before still haunt the young man's mind, and he's scared that he'll do something stupid in front of Jake. Shaking off his nerves, Colby makes his way to Jake's apartment, his heart beating faster and faster the closer he gets to it.

After a string of knocks on the familiar door, a shout from the inside is heard, "Come in!" With a shake of his head, and a smile on his face, Colby walks into the small apartment. He can't help but chuckle when he sees that there are clothes laid out everywhere on the floor. Looking up from the floor, Colby is shocked to see a shirtless Jake packing his bag quickly.
With a small blush, Colby clears his throat to get Jake's attention. A frantic Jake turns toward Colby, and gives him a big grin, "Hey, dude!" He drops the article of clothing he has in his hand, then gives Colby a quick hug.
"Hey, Jake." Colby day as he looks around, "Tara not here?" He hesitantly asks.
Jake shakes his head, "No, she went home last night." Jake freezes before looking at Colby again, "About last night. . . What happened?" He asks, concern all over his face.
Colby shifts awkwardly; he's happy that Jake is concerned about him, but Colby doesn't want to expose anything about his secret feelings for the brunette. With another clearing of his thought, Colby finally speaks, "W-What do you mean?" He asks as he stumbles over his words.
Jake's brown eyes give Colby a playful glare, "I mean how you basically ignored me last night. You only talked to me when I first showed up, but not a peep after!" He complains, his lower lip pokes out as he pouts at Colby.
With another uncomfortable shift, Colby lets out a strangled laugh, "I just wasn't feeling it last night. I'm sorry." He gives the man a sweet smile, feeling adoration for his friend in front of him. Jake only smiles back before throwing his packed bag to the side.

Having forgot that Jake is shirtless, Colby gasps lightly when Jake picks up a random sweatshirt — pulling it over his bare torso. Colby blushes when Jake looks up, catching Colby staring. The brown eyed man smiles at Colby before grabbing his shoes, and pulling them on.
Jake picks up his packed bag and slings it over his shoulder. The pair walk out of the small apartment together, ready to get start their new adventure.

The drive to the airport was long, so Sam and Colby took that time to explain where they're going.
"I know this is a surprise, but Colby and I both knew that the both of you wouldn't come if you knew where we are going," Sam explains as he fixes the camera on the dash board. Colby nods his head as focuses on the road, internally agreeing with his friend next to him.
Colby heard Jake snort, "Just tell us where we're going, Sam!" Jake says impatiently, his jaw clenched as he looks at the blonde.
Sam clears his throat before looking at the boys, "We're going to The Stanley Hotel." He says boldly, he smirks at Corey.
The brunette driver chuckles when he hears the protests that fall out of the mouth of Corey. The man demands that Colby turn around and take him home, but Sam is quick to explain the situation.
"Corey, we already have your ticket. You're going." Sam sounds amused as he turns back to the camera, "We'll see you guys later." He smiles at the camera before turning it off.
The rest of the driver consisted of Corey angrily complaining to the two friends in the front. Jake sat frozen, not saying anything until they got to the airport. Colby catches up with the tall man as they walk to the door of the huge building, "Hey. . . " Colby says as he matches Jake's step.
"Hey." Jake says tensely, not looking at the man next to him. Colby sighs, "I'm sorry for not telling you. Sam wanted it to be a surprise." He explains quickly. Jake only nods, "It's okay, Colbs. It's not you, it's Tara."
Colby frowns before making Jake stop — and look at him, "What happened, bro?" He asks softly. Colby watches as Jake's eyes cast downwards, "She's pissed I'm leaving. She said something about not being there for her." Jake sounds confused as he looks back up at Colby, "What does that even mean?"
The older man is about to answer, but he hears Sam yelling at them — telling them that they're leaving soon. Colby gives Jake a sad smile before leading him to the boarding door.
•••
Sitting down in his seat, Colby quickly looks for his friends. He finds them all a few seat in front of him. While they're separated, the four friends still talk to each other quietly so to not wake any of the other passengers.
Once it's late, the friends stop talking and go back to their phones. Colby puts his headphones in, and lets the music lull him to sleep; he watches the sunset over the clouds as he feels his eyes droop.

The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]
