《How to Write Stories People Will Love》8. Get Critiques
Advertisement
Remember when I said Good and Bad are irrelevant where a first draft is concerned? That's because you can reasonably assume that all first drafts need work. Let me repeat this because it's something a lot of beginning writers don't realize:
ALL FIRST DRAFTS WILL NEED REVISIONS.
I love first drafts. They're magical to me. It's a transcript of a string of intangible images from my head, translated into physical form. But it's an imperfect translation. Ever copy and paste a foreign language into an online translator and then stare at the grammatically disastrous results? It's kind of like that. The first pass is to get it all down into words. The next step is to figure out how to improve it.
Unfortunately, I'm the worst person to figure out what to improve because I'm the one who wrote it. Everything made perfect sense when I first wrote it. And it's not just me. All of us develop blinders when it comes to our own work. We need objective critiques from someone else, and not just anyone either. We need to find people who get us. This is harder than it sounds.
Think about all the dates you've been on (and if you haven't, don't feel bad. I didn't go on my first date until halfway through college.). Trying to find a critique partner is a lot like that. The person needs to like the genre you write it in. Needs to like your writing style. Needs to be experienced enough to see areas of improvement. Needs to be eloquent enough to phrase the suggestions in a manner that is constructive and makes sense to you.
I have a friend who is my biggest cheerleader and supporter. Everything I show her, she likes. She likes my style, my stories, and me. But she rarely has suggestions for improvement. She's not a writer, or even an avid fiction reader. When I exchange manuscripts with other actual writers, I get back feedback that opens my eyes to things I hadn't realized. When I mention these suggestions to my friend, she'll be all, "Huh, that's true. I hadn't thought about that."

If you're not sure where to start, try joining the Discord server I frequent (https://discord.gg/UD7t7pN - check comments for a clickable link). I used to direct people to the Wattpad Community forums, but those have been shut down. Some of its users have started their own groups, and this is one of them. It's a respectful place where authors and readers can chat about anything. It also has a channel for getting writing advice and posting passages for other users to critique. Everyone is really nice, so go check it out!
An excellent resource I use for my short stories is Critique Circle (http://critiquecircle.com/). You earn points by critiquing other writers' work, and then you can spend points to post your own work for feedback. It's a great system, and most of the feedback you get is tactful, useful, and timely.
The following is a list of other resources I've used to find beta readers and critique partners. I'll add a link into the comments beside each one.

This article has some suggestions for other routes to try - https://thewritelife.com/find-a-critique-partner/
There's also the #cpmatch tag in Twitter. Lots of writers post their stuff there in hopes of finding someone to pair up with. Try searching the tag to see how they do it.
When you do get feedback, be selective in your implementation. Remember that most of these people you trade with aren't professional writers. They are merely sharing their thoughts, and a lot of it is opinion. This means the feedback is subjective, and not necessarily truth. In the end, you need to decide if the suggestion will make your story stronger or not. Don't let your story get away from you. Don't implement every single suggestion given to you, or you risk the story belonging to someone else. Choose the ones that make sense and feel right to you.

If you remain true to yourself, your work will fulfill you. Your story will improve and grow. Eventually an audience will find you who vibe with your work. These are your readers. These are the people you want. Not everyone. These people.

Caged within the Ravencourt
A short and pain-filled life was all that Melissa was given, and it wasn't until falling asleep for the last time that she was finally given something more. Waking up in a healthy and young body, and faced with an unfamiliar culture and even more inexplicable sights, Melissa had to adapt to her life new as Kalie, the third Princess of the Shattered Isles of Cerith. It didn't take long for Kalie to realize that even though she finds herself in a strange world, she may just be one of the strangest parts of it. As Kalie comes to terms with her bizarre new life, she finds herself set in the sights of the powerful new king of a far off land. Eventually finding herself taken away to be Caged within the Ravencourt. This story is world spanning, and slow to start. It's my intention to build up towards the epic story I'm hoping to tell. Don’t expect over the top powers, just smart characters using magic interestingly. And, like my other stories, the focus is on the characters themselves, less so the world they’re in. Enjoy!

The King is Back
Life in the forest is all that the unnamed boy has known for all his life. After being abandoned by his parents years ago, his only salvation is the martial art and books that his father left him. One day, after encountering an unforeseen incident, the boy learns of his true lineage in a secret kingdom which is more technologically advanced than the rest of the world. Important Note: This is going to be an evolving story as I write. I am sure many of you will have plenty of criticisms for the earliest/earlier chapters and some of them are justified but I intend to continuously improve as I progress through the story. I hope you stick with me until then. Features: Technology Gap, Mechs in a Fantasy World, Conspiracies and Mysteries, Epic Adventures! Note: Mechs will be featured but it is NOT the main thing about this story. There will be extended periods of time of a more grounded story rather than mech warfare. But worry not, there will also be times of full-on glorious mech battles so keep reading! Cover art from an artwork done by Adam Burn. I do not own any of the copyrights of the image.
