《How to Write Stories People Will Love》21. Carve Out Time
Advertisement
Now that the holidays are over, it's time to get back to school or work. Time to get busy again with the very things that get in the way of our writing. As things pick up, be conscious of excuse-making. "I don't have time," is a very common utterance.
Although it's usually true--we just don't have as much time as we want--we can take steps to ensure that we have at least a little bit. If time seems to constantly be sucked away from you, make a plan to reserve a portion for yourself. Block out a half hour with no interruptions and no internet, and just write. I can spend half an hour just writing out a thoughtful email, so I understand it may not seem like much.
But it's something. A half hour every day is 3.5 hours a week. You may feel like you're inching through a blasting blizzard as far as progress, but it's still forward movement. Without it, your writing muscles will stagnate, and your muse will go find someone else to inspire.
Try to figure out when you're least likely to be interrupted. Maybe you can stop by a library on your way home from school or work. Or maybe it's just before bedtime, when everyone else is asleep. Pick a time that works, and guard it jealously. Make an effort to preserve that block for yourself. Writers need their alone time, and by doing this, your story will progress, and you will keep your sanity.
