《How to Write Stories People Will Love》Question 20: Staying in character
Advertisement
asks: You have already written about how to develop characters, but how do you make sure they don't do something that seems out of character for them without solid validation? Experienced writers will know when their characters are behaving the way they're supposed to, but for those starting out, this seems to be a major problem. Particularly in the fanfiction world where I make my presence known.
Believe it or not, this is a problem that even experienced writers encounter sometimes. We have an idea in our heads about how we want a certain scene to play out, so we write that out. And when we read it over, it seems good because it matches what we envisioned. But then a reader might point out that the character in question wouldn't say or do that. And it's not until it's pointed out to us that we realize it!
This is one of those things that's easy to miss when we don't employ beta readers or critique partners. We're too close to the project to be objective. That said, here are a few tips to help your characters stay true to themselves while you write:
An introverted math wiz wouldn't raise their hand in English class to answer a question. Wouldn't ask a love interest out on a date without extensive anxiety. An amiable surfer wouldn't get angry about being given a turkey sandwich instead of peanut butter and jelly. A high strung gymnast wouldn't be relaxed before an event.
A character without personality is two-dimensional and forgettable. So try to make your characters feel like real people, at least in your head. Get to know them well enough so you can predict their behavior, just as you would a friend.
Successful actors understand who their character is, and get into the role by assuming the personality of the character. They try to see the world through the eyes of that person. They try to be that person. Writers can do the same thing. We can attempt to shift our mindset to that of the character, and try to think like they do.

Your characters need to make decisions based on what someone with that personality would do. Every time they do or say something, ask yourself, would they really do this? Or would they really say it like that?
It's much easier to write what you know, so if you're just starting out, try writing a character that is similar in personality to yourself. It's much easier to stay in character, because you know the personality better than anyone else!

The Legend of Rayola the Deathless [Dead]
[This story is Discontinued] Another story based on the lore, which has been expanded and with far more details and hopefully better writing shall be released later on. After about the tenth time she died, Rayola started to think, that maybe she didn't come out quite right, even by supernatural standards. Of course, the pale white skin and hair, plus the blazing orange eyes might have been a clue and it was getting harder and harder to blend in. To top it all off, she has no memory of who she is and there's an incredibly suspiscious, snarky voice in her head making quips about her life choices. Even worse was the inability to sleep. At first, she thought that maybe she was just an overly messed up zombie or even a vampire! But she was proven wrong time and time agian... there were too many inconsistencies and it made her uneasy. The final straw was the issue with her own identity. At first she was okay with being her own brand-new person, but as more and more ghosts of her past started to slowly catch up, she had no choice but to set off on a journey... A journey to discover who she once was, and to find out what had happened to her. It was for no noble cause but merely one for personal salvation. Yet, her actions left behind a legend in her wake.

Dark Matter
In the year 2023, scientists investigating the nature of dark matter caused a blackout throughout the entire world of Coranth. With this blackout came the appearance of supernatural and near-magical elemental abilities able to be wielded by all. By harnessing the dark matter in the environment, even ordinary humans now accessed powers that would have been deemed fantasy. These abilities include Wind, Fire, Lightning, Water, and Terra, being the five natural elements of which dark matter is absorbed by the planet itself. Additionally, the two moons orbiting Coranth offer the "Superior" elements of Dark and Light. The year is now 2041, and Dark Matter will follow the story of an adolescent boy named Raiden Sullivan in a dystopian future, 16 years old, eldest of 2, and son to Marcus Sullivan. Raiden is an intelligent young man belonging to a poor family with an absentee mother. He partakes in daily chores to cover living expenses after school and his home life is surrounded by his caring father and younger sister. In truth, this is my take on urban fantasy with slight LitRPG that keeps the "magic" elements somewhat scientific for a more realistic story. In using the dark matter surrounding our universe, humans can now harness elemental abilities as well as absorb dark matter from the beasts/monsters to further strengthen their abilities. For the most part, that'll be the main premise of the power system. Full transparency, this will be the first story I write and also the first story I publish, so please be patient with me. For some context, I'm an avid reader and after 4 or so years of only consuming, I feel that it might be time to try my hand at writing instead. Please feel free to add your opinions and criticism, it would be much appreciated. With that said, I hope you enjoy Dark Matter!
