《Child of Legend - A Shadow and Bone Fanfic》Chapter 4

"You're going to have to say something eventually", Ivan was beginning to get frustrated with me now, it had almost been around two hours and still I refused to look or say anything to him.
He told me that he was taking me home, I knew that there was something more to it, that they wouldn't let me go that easy, not after finding out what I could do, instead of taking me home I was loaded into a black coach like a cow onto a trailer.
The coach stopped, Ivan sighed "Fine, be like that, it won't get you very far", he got up to leave.
"You're a liar" I muttered.
"Excuse me?"
"You're a liar, a murderous liar. I saw you, it was you, you killed them."
"I did what I had to" he shrugged.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing, "You have innocent blood on your hands, and you're ok with that? How do you sleep at night, knowing that you killed innocent people?"
He just sneered at me and left. All the windows in the coach were covered so no one could see in, I lifted up the fabric that was covering the one Ivan had left through slightly and peered out, we were at the edge of a forest, everyone was gathered listening to Ivan, 'wait a minute, everyone was over there' I thought 'If I go out the opposite door, no one will notice' making sure they were still talking, I went over to the other door, 'Danm it' I thought, I couldn't just slowly slip open the door, I had to push it, curse those Grisha and their well-made doors.
'Ok' I thought 'On 3. 1... 2... 3" I went to catch the door before it hit the coach, but it bounced off of something I hadn't seen.
"Ouch" someone yelled, "What are you doing?" they stared at me in their grey uniform, 'shoot' I thought, Ivan had left a guard at this side.
"Spencer, what's the problem?" I heard Ivan shout, I pushed the guard over and ran, trying to get to the forest so I could lose the guards in the trees, I was almost there when I heard Ivan say, "Oh no you don't" my entire body froze, I felt my heart slow and everything went black.
When I woke up I was laying on the softest bed I had ever been on, it felt like what I imagine clouds would feel like, my head throbbed, probably from hitting the ground when I passed out. "Goodmorning" I heard a cold voice say, instantly I was awake, I used my elbows to help me sit upright and saw the Darkling sitting on the other side of the room reading a book, "Or should I say good evening," he closed the book, setting it on the table next to him, his dark eyes stared at me, waiting for me to say something, "You can talk, you know?" he told me.

"Where am I?" I demanded, I was scared, scared more than I had ever been but I wasn't going to let him see that.
"The little palace, you've been all everyone's talked about since we brought you here"
"You mean kidnapped, you kidnapped me and brought me here against my will"
"This is the only safe place for people like us" he tried explaining to me.
"Like us? I'm not like you, and I was perfectly safe until you people came, destroyed, and murdered my village, I would have been perfectly fine if you had just left us alone" I shouted at him.
"Don't raise your voice at me" he said standing up, "You'll come around, but for now, you will remain in your room until further notice, when I think you are ready, I will have someone come give you your training schedule"
I stared at him in shock as he went out the door, I wasn't going to let this man tell me what to do, I went over to the door and turned the knob, it was locked, I kicked the door out of frustration and then slid down to the floor, the room I was in was beautiful, a beautiful prison, it was big and spacious with a huge bed, desk, couch, and fireplace, there was an archway covered by a curtain that Rena presumed led to a bathroom, she let her head fall into her knees and she cried, she finally let her dam of emotions break and they all came flooding out, each and every piece of sorrow and grief she had been holding hostage was finally free as she tried to comprehend everything that had happened.
Days turned into weeks and still, I was locked inside the room, it might have helped if she didn't hide whenever a servant came in, frightening the poor soul into thinking she had gotten out. The food they brought her was beyond anything she had ever seen or smelled, and probably tasted but she never ate any of it, she was used to going days without food, her village had a food shortage so it wasn't uncommon for entire families to fast, every morning a servent would come in with food on a tray that smelled like heaven, warm and delicious, and every evening when they came with dinner they would leave with the same tray everything still there, untouched, but cold. The wardrobe was filled with lushes clothes made of silk and velvet, kefta's, dresses, and more, but still, she remained in the same clothes that they had found her in, she could have laid in the enormous bed that was laid out for her but instead she took a blanket and a pillow and laid them underneath the desk, she didn't care that they gave her all these luxuries, warm food, clothes, a bed, she wasn't going to take anything from them, nothing.

One morning I woke up to a knock at the door, I didn't answer, they knocked again and I didn't answer, the third time instead of knocking they just walked straight in, "Would you ever care to answer your door?" the Darkling asked closing the door behind him, I stayed silent, praying that he wouldn't see me, that he would just walk back out and never come back, he set the tray that he was holding on the table next to the couch, "Rena?" he called, he looked over at the perfectly made bed that I hadn't touched, he then proceeded to walk straight into the bathroom, he came out and looked around, then he spotted me under the table, "What are you doing?" he asked, "Get out from under there".
I came out and stood up, "You walked into the bathroom." I remarked.
"So?"
"I could have been changing, or taking a bath"
He raised an eyebrow, "You haven't changed your clothes or bathe in two weeks" he countered, "The servants say you haven't eaten anything since you got here".
"I wasn't hungry"
"And sleeping under the desk?"
I shrugged my shoulders, "It's nice under there", we stared at each other for a few awkward moments, "Why are you here?" I asked him.
"Is it so much of a problem for me to check up on my daughter?"
"Don't, don't say that"
He smirked, "I also left my book here"
"It's over there, where you left it" I pointed.
"You didn't read it?"
"I don't touch other people's things, the same can't be said for you obviously" I locked eyes with him, "Give me my stuff back"
He strolled over to the table where he left his book and sat down lazily in the chair next to it, "Mabey if you ask nicely"
"Guess I'm never getting my things back then" I sighed.
He brought the tray over to me, it had warm soup and bread on it with a glass of milk, "You're very peaky, you need to eat more" he said setting the tray beside me.
"I'm not hungry," I told him, ignoring my stomach that was yearning for a taste of the fresh bread.
"I'm sorry you mustn't have understood, I wasn't asking you to eat, I'm telling you to," he said towering over me.
"And mabey you didn't understand me, I'm not hungry" I repeated not breaking his gaze.
He picked up a piece of bread and handed it to me, "Eat it" he ordered.
Reluctantly I took the bread and took a bite, it was amazing, like no other bread I had ever tasted, the bread back in the village was usually stale and had chunks taken out of it from rats, but this, this was so different, it was warm and as fluffy as summer clouds.
"Tomorrow morning, we're going to go to the forest just outside the little palace, you need to learn how to control your power so you don't have another, how do I put this, outburst." he announced.
"That happened once," I remarked.
"It happens every time you go to sleep, the shadows come from you and then melt away by the touch of light, then the shadows melt the light away and then-"
"Ya, ya I get it, then the light comes and melts the shadows, yadda, yadda, what I want to know is why you were watching me sleep?" I questioned him.
He once again ignored my question, "We leave tomorrow morning, eat up, you'll need your strength, the servants will bring you a fresh kefta to wear in the morning, wear it, it's bulletproof and much warmer than what you have on now", he then turned to leave, "Oh and if your bored I left my book here", he walked out the door and I was once again left alone in the room, in my beautiful prison.
