《The Player Broke My Leg》Chapter 12

As Evan helped me into the front seat of the car I took in his appearance. He was no longer in his food delivery clothes, which was a black polo with the name of the restaurant embroidered above the breast bone and tan khakis. Now, he was wearing a short sleeved red button down shirt with dark blue skinny jeans. His hair was probably nice and tamed when he left his house, but the wind must have other plans since it was tousled around. After he closes the door besides me, he walks over to the drivers side.
"So, did you pick a movie?" He asked as he sits down and starts the car. The engine roared to life in his small older car.
"That depends," I started to say as I click on my seat belt. "How well do you handle horror movies?"
"I think I handle them quite well," he smiles as me as he shifts the car into reverse. As the car drifts back, I look back up to my house to see Jasper shutting the door behind him, but he kept his gaze firmly on me. It sent shudders down my spine as I turned to look away from him an focus my attention back to Evan.
"Good. You haven't seen 'Its Outside' yet have you?" I asked as he puts the car in drive and takes off down the street.
Evans smile got bigger. "I've been dying to see that since it been out. I need to know what's out there."
"Well it could be one of three things," I start to say as I turn to face him. "It'd either a serial killer, a demon, or a monster. Actually I was planning on seeing it the other day, but that didn't work out as planned."
"Lucky me then," he chuckled and flashed his white teeth. He's been smiling non-stop since we got in the car.
"Yep, thanks to good ole Bessy here," I say sarcastically as I slap my cast softly. I'd rather not hurt myself.
He narrowed his eyebrows at me. "That's the best name you could come up with? Pathetic."
I couldn't hold back my laugh. "Oh yeah? What would you call it then?"
Evan thought for a moment before laughing to himself. It was a good thing since we were at a stop light. I would rather not spend this date in a ditch.
"Cast-idy," he gasps as he finally stopped laughing.
I roll my eyes at him but I cracked a smile too. Castidy sounded a lot like Cassidy and it was a better name then Bessy.
"Is it too late to stop this date?" I asked jokingly.
"Well, seeing as we're here it will be very awkward to drive you back home," he says as he pulls into the movie theater parking lot and parks as close as he can.
"You don't need to drive me. I can hitch hike," I joked. "I most definitely will not end up being murdered."
"Yeah, you just need to keep an eye out for Ted Bundy. With that cast it will be like taking candy from a baby," Evan said as he played along as he got out of the car and started to walk around to my side to open the passenger door, but I already opened it.
"Eh, Bundy had a thing for brunettes. Blonds really aren't his type," I say casually as I take Evans hand that was out stretched to me and slowly get out of the car.

"I'm guessing you watched that Ted Bundy thing on Netflix then?" He asked as he reached into the car and grabbed my crutches.
"I kinda watched it in one sitting," I say as I try not to sound creepy. Documentaries of serial killers were my guilty pleasures and I don't know why. It calms me.
"That's dedication," he says as he closes the car door and we both head towards the theater door. The door to the place was automatic, so we walk in side by side. Above the ticket sale booth, all the movies and their times were listed. "'It's Outside' doesn't start for another forty minutes."
"Well, there's only one thing to do then," I say with confidence, but he just looks at me weirdly. "The arcade, duh."
"Great idea," Evan says. "I would say let's race, but I know I'd win."
"Cocky much?" I question. "I'll let you know I'm a pro on these things. Let's go to one of those running of the bulls things. I will walk out alive."
"Is that a challenge?" He asks with a smile. We walk into the arcade. The lights coming off of the machines lit up the room. We we're the only ones in the arcade at the time. Normally there would be screaming children all over the place, but now it's empty and quiet.
"Yes," I say firmly, but I end up laughing after a minute.
"So," Evan says as he looks around the arcade. "Which game do you want to play?"
I look around the room and take a glance at all the games. There was a couple of pinball machines that were Rolling Stones and Kiss themed. One of the walls was lined up with claw machines. There were a few racing and shooting games tucked in the corner, but in the center was an air hockey table.
"Air hockey?" I suggest is I walk over to the table. I reached into my purse and pull out a dollar before feeding it into the machine. I look over at Evan who already had his wallet out. "Gotta be quicker than that if you want to win," I say as I grab the small puck the machine spit out.
A smirk appeared on his face as he went to the other side of the table. "Oh, I'll show you quick."
"You're all talk," I say to tease him. I set the puck down and hit it as fast as I can. It ricochets off the sides, but Evan easily hits it back towards me.
"So, tell me something I don't know about you?" Evan asked as we hit the puck back and forth. Neither one of us was hitting it hard.
"You probably don't know anything about me," I shrug. "I'm not close with a lot of people so I'm basically a mystery."
"True, but I want to know everything about you," Evan says, causing my heart to skip a beat. While I was distracted, the puck slipped right past me and went into the hole. "Dang it. You distracted me."
Evan chuckled. "I didn't mean to."
"Yeah right," I say as I point to him. "I'm keeping my eye on you." I hit the puck harder this time, but he easily deflects it. "So what do you want to know?"
"What do you want to do after highschool?" He asked. "Are you planning on going to college?"
"Yeah, but I don't know where yet," I tell him. "I'll probably stay in the state, but far enough that I won't be coming home often. What about you?"

"I am planning on going. I'm going to try to get into Rutherford University since it's cheaper," he tells me.
"Oh, cool," I say with a smile. "What do you want to study?"
"I don't know yet," he started to explain. "I want to be a writer, but I don't know what kind of job I can get with a degree with that. My father keeps telling me to do business management so I can take over the restaurant with my brother, but I don't want to do that."
"Who cares what your dad thinks? If it makes you happy, you should do it," I say to him. "If people say it's impossible, do it anyway and prove them wrong."
"That's a good point," he agreed as he hits the puck towards me but he misses. "What do you want to do?"
"Well...," I started to say but I cut myself off. I've never told anyone what I planned on doing, well, nobody asked. "I was planning on getting a degree in criminology and becoming a cop."
Evan stopped moving when I said that. He probably thought I was crazy and I would never become one. The only good thing about what was happening is that I managed to score on him.
"A cop?" He asked, but then he smiled. "I can see that actually. You might need to buff up a bit and stop falling out of windows, but I think you can make it."
I let out a sigh of relief. He was the first person I told, and it felt good to get it off my shoulders. "Thanks."
"What did your parents say when you told them that?" Evan asked as he retrieved the puck.
"They don't know," I wave off.
"Really? Man, your dad will probably freak out when you tell him that," Evan says casually. I cussed to myself at the conversation I was about to have with Evan about my home life. No one knew about my family situation except the Kings. Jasper knew that was sensitive information so he never brought it up at school, which was shocking.
"My dad's not in the picture," I say, hoping that was enough and that he would drop it.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know he passed away," Evan says immediately as if he messed up.
"He's not dead," I start to explain to Evan. "It's a long story, but the cliff notes version is he abandoned me when I was a kid and now has a replacement family."
"Oh my God," Evan says as he started to walk toward me but I put my hand up to stop him.
"It's okay. I'm over it," I tell him. "No need to comfort me or anything. I honestly don't know where you were going with the whole walking over here thing."
"Well, I was going to hug you, but you completely blew me off," he said as put his hands up. "Rude."
"Well, do you need a hug?" I asked. I wasn't a hugger. When I turned eleven, I stopped receiving hugs and I probably wasn't that good at it.
"I don't need your pity hug," he said with a chuckle as he went back to where he was before.
"Look at who's the rude one now," I say as I start to focus back on the game, but the puck went straight into the goal. "I wasn't ready."
The machine didn't release the puck again since it only went up to two, which was awful. Or perhaps we were too slow and it just got sick of us taking out time.
"My turn," Evan said with a smug look as he walked past me and went to the claw machine. "You think I can win?"
"Maybe," I say as I look inside the machine. Most of the stuffed animals were buried, but there were a few that looked like they could be picked up.
Evan gave the machine a dollar. The claw came to life and Evan started to move it around. He positioned it about this rainbow looking thing before releasing the claw. It missed the first time, but he managed to pull it out a bit. On the second try he won whatever it was.
"Here you go," Evan smiled has he handed me a rainbow caterpillar with a big smile stitched on to it's face.
"That's cute. Thanks," I say as I take it. "I guess it's my turn."
"You don't have too," Evan said as he tried to stop me, but it was too late and I already popped a few quarters in. "Well, that bats kinds cute."
There were two bats in the machine. One was black, the other hot pink. I know very well which one I was going for. It only took one try since the pink one was right next to the hole. It ended up falling before it was fully over the hole but it managed to hit the plastic siding and fell in.
"I can't bend down to get it," I say to him as I nudged him. He bent down and scowled when he saw the pink one. "That's the one you wanted, right?"
"Yeah," he said, but I could tell he was lying. "I'll call her Bessy."
"That's a great name," I say as I shove the caterpillar into my bag, but the head was peeking out. "Are you ready to see the movie?"
Evan nodded as we both went to go buy the tickets. Originally, I was planning on buying my own ticket, but Evan already said two and had a credit card out faster then I could blink. He even had the nerve to buy the popcorn and drinks.
"Don't worry about it," he said as he carried a big tub of popcorn and two large drinks. When we get to the door, he tried to shift all the stuff into one hand to get the door without spilling anything. I roll my eyes as I reached out and opened the door with ease.
"I'm not completely useless," I say in victory.
"I'll keep that in mind," Evan smirks as he walks past me and into the theater. "Where do you want to sit?"
There were only a handful of people scattered around. I had expected to see more people since it was also five o'clock, but I wasn't going to complain. The less amount of people is better.
"How about here?" I point to the row that had a bar in front of it.
"Perfect," Evan agreed as we both made our way to the center of the row.
As we walk, I can hear murmurs coming from behind me. I glanced up to see a group of familiar looking teenagers who were staring straight at me, but as soon as I looked at them they turned away like nothing happened. They weren't very stealthily.
I sit down and prop my leg up on the railing. The floor was sticky and had pieces of popcorn laying around. I did not want that on me.
Evan places our drinks in the cup holders and then places the popcorn in between us. As soon as he got the tub to balance, he placed his feet on the railing and looked at me.
"What's your favorite horror movie?" He asked as he grabbed a few pieces of popcorn and shoved them into his mouth.
I thought for a moment. "Child's Play. You know, the one with Chucky."
"No way," he said in excitement. "That's my favorite too."
"Really?" My jaw dropped. Most people I know say it's an awful movie, but I thought it was fantastic. Murderous doll trying to kill kids is my favorite genre. "Have you seen the newer ones?"
"I haven't seen the Cult one yet. Every time I sit down to watch it, something always pops up," he explains.
"There's this thing called ignoring everything around you. I do it all the time and it's fantastic," I says before taking a sip of my drink.
The lights in the theater start to dim, and everyone in the room starts to shut up. I reposition myself to look at the screen as it comes on. In the corner of my eye, I could see Evan sneaking peaks at me, and there was only one reason why he would be doing that.
I probably had a piece of popcorn on my face.
