The Only one
Chapter 17
Ryan just pulled up infront of Bex's house. I haven't talked to her since that day at the beach, and I'm kind of nervous...
"Are you sure you're okay?" Ryan asks as I grab my bag from the back of his car.
"Yeah, I'll be fine, thank you for bringing me."
"You're welcome..." He says and pecks me on the cheek. I get out of the car, slowly walking up to the door.
I hesitantly knock on Bex's door, an action I never pursue, but at this point in time, I can't really just walk in the door...
Bex slowly opens the door and looks extremely surprised to see me standing here.
She opens her mouth to say something, but shuts it again and pulls me into a bone crushing hug and bursts into tears.
I immediately hug her back and smile at her. "I'm so sorry, B, I'm so sorry about everything."
She shakes her head, and almost whispers an "it's alright," until bursting into larger sobs.
I let her cry for a while, embraced in my arms, until she's all out of tears.
We sit down on the couch, and my best friend looks to me. "I'm sorry, Bex. I was immature, and I overreacted, and I- I'm so sorry!"
"Han, for the seventh time, it's alright! I understand where you're coming from and we should've told you." B says.
"So- so how have things been...? I ask awkwardly.
She gives me the eye, "Well, you know, same old, same old, until today that is. Look, I'm so sorry about your ..."
I really don't wanna talk about my dad! Or Bex's brother, I don't want to start crying...again.
"Please, don't." I say. "How're things with TJ?"
"Good, I guess, he's away right now though with his brother."
"Oh." Is all I say. I feel bad that I don't know this- he IS my best friend after all.
"Yeah, so how's Ryan? I heard about you two, ya know. Congrats by the way. I know you've been dreaming about this for ages."
"Thank you," I say sincerely. "He's been really great."
"So when are you leaving?" She asks. I knew she'd ask, but I feel so bad.
"Tomorrow night. I leave tomorrow night."
"Wowzers. So you're going to Tulsa, is it? Then Boston and South America, and then back to Boston. Wow. When are you going to be home?"

"I don't know, I really don't. I know that the Overstreet's, Follese's, and Keaggy's live in Tennessee, so there's not too much here. But they have a lot of shows here, so we'll be back often." I smile.
"Good. I can't stay that long without you again. Do you know what you put me through?!" Bex asks. "And it was like- it was like you didn't care! Like you didn't care that you were moving on without me, and making new friends." She explains.
"I'm so sorry, Bex. I feel so bad! I never stopped caring, I was just so hurt, and I was ready to talk about it."
"Look, I get it, I get why you did what you did and I'm sorry. I'm so sorry we didn't tell you." She says. I'm so sick of these apologies.
I just smile at her, and in the matter of seconds, she asks me, "So did you see the latest married to Jonas?!?!"
I look at her with a look on my face saying, 'are you kidding me?!' Then I say, "Of course I did!!!!"
"Isn't it great?!?!? My favorite episodes are the ones with Nick on!" She squeals.
"Seriously?! I like the ones with Joe! Oh, and Frankie!"
"Oh my gosh, Frankie is just too adorable!! I like Dani's brother too!" She smirks.
"You would, Bex, you would!"
"Hey, you can't say that he's not attractive!" She throws back at me.
"Eh, you've got a point there." I say, with a shrug of my shoulders. "So, have you seen the advertisement for that new movie Pitch Perfect?"
"Yes! I wanna see that so bad!!" Bex says with as much enthusiasm as I used.
"Oh my gosh, Maggie, Ian, Ryan, and I saw it last night, it was the funniest thing!! We have to see it together!!"
"Well you're leaving tomorrow night..." She trails off.
"Well, why don't we see it now? There's a showing at 7:05, and we've got a good 45 minutes before that." I suggest, so we can get her mind off of, you know, things...
She gives me a look saying, 'I don't know...'
"C'mon, it'll be fun! You'll love it!!" I say.
I can still see the doubt sadness in her eyes, as she reluctantly agrees to go.

When the movie is over, I say, "So, what'd you think?"

"It was disgusting." Is all she says.
"That's all you have to say?!"
"Okay, fine, FATAMYWASHILARIOUSANDJESSEANDBECCAWERESOCUTEICANTTAKEIT!!!"
"Now that's what I was waiting for." I smile triumphantly, and she laughs. "So, do you wanna go actually meet Ryan now? The first time you met him you barely said a word to him."
"That was because I knew how much you wanted to talk to him. I didn't want to take that away from you."
"You would really do that for me?" I ask.
"Of course! You're my best friend! I would do anything for you." She says and smiles sadly.
"Thank you, Bex. I'm so sorry I didn't talk to you or support you." I say, and hug her.
"It's okay! It's fine." She smiles, as we get into my car and head to Ryan's.
***
When we get to the guys place, I walk in the front door, and say, "Hi hi!" And smile, as Bex admires the place. I will admit, it is huge. "Guys, I don't know if you remember, but this is Bex."
"Hey!" Ian, Jamie, and Nash say, and Bex smiles back politely, and says 'hi'.
"Guys, where's Ryan?" I ask.
"Oh, he's outside grilling up some steaks!" Ian says. "It's your lucky night, I bought two extra!"
"Thanks Ian." I laugh and make Bex stay with the guys, as I go outside to say hi to Ryan.
As I approach the back door, I see two figures kissing. "Ryan?" I ask.
He pulls away quickly, and I get a look at the person. Monica. Of course. "Han, let me explain." He says, as I turn away. "Hanna, wait!" He pulls on my arm and I immediately yank it out of his grasp, as Monica smirks triumphantly.
"Ryan, stop, she's not worth it." I hear Monica say to Ryan, trying to comfort him.
"Shut up, Monica!" He yells at her venomously. "Hanna, wait! Come back!" He yells after me. "Let me explain!"
I turn around then, my eyes filling up with tears, and say, "Explain what, Ryan?! I'm pretty sure you kissing Monica is pretty self-explanatory!"
Ryan stops, as if he doesn't know what to say, and stops following me, as I go inside to get Bex.
Ian sees me first. "Hanna, oh my god, what happened?!" He asks, getting off the couch, and hugging me.
"He-he-Monica-and-" I try to explain, but I just burst into tears in Ian's arms, as he strokes my hair, and tells me it's going to be alright.
Monica then walks through the living room and out the front door, giggling like a little girl. An evil little girl.
"Hey Han?" Jamie asks and I just barely look up to see him and he whispers in my ear, "Do you want me to kick his ass?" I let out a small laugh, and the Ryan walks in the room.
"Hanna." Is all he says.
"Stop Ryan. I don't wanna hear it." I say, building up all the courage that I have. "How could you do that to me?! I trusted you. I loved you. How could you throw that all away for a girl that you say you hate? Just - how could you?!"
"Hanna, I didn't kiss her. I would never kiss Monica!"
"Well that is not what it looked like out there!"
"Hanna, Monica kissed me! I would never ever kiss her!"
"Save it, Ryan." I say and try to drag Bex, who was sitting next to Nash, out the door. As much as I want to believe Ryan, I just don't know if I do.
"So what about the tour?" He asks.
"I don't know, Ryan. Why don't you just ask Monica?" I throw bitterly at him and storm out the door.
I get into my car and start driving back to Bex's house, as tears stream down my face until I can't see anymore.
Bex doesn't even ask if I'm alright. She already knows the answer and that's what I love about her: she's not going to make me talk when she clearly knows I don't want to.
When we get to her house, she hugs me and whispers in my ear, "I'm so sorry, Han." And she gets out of the car and slowly walks into her house.
She shouldn't be saying sorry to me! What happened to her is far worse! And I didn't even say anything! I'm the worst friend ever.
I slowly drive home, tears drowning down my face the whole way and when I get home, I roll into bed, and cry myself to sleep.

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!
