A/n ~ Opposites attract :)
In the small city of Dongju, Daegu there was a standard for many people... mainly to date in their race in order to keep the family name, they should like the exact same things you do, and just be similar enough.
A lot of they younger people didn't agree with the rules and tried to branch out, but it just ended in some forced marriage. It resulted in secret relationships, people migrating to other cities or countries, and a few protests against the Dongju government.
The rules weren't strict but they just wished people would listen to them... then nothing would go wrong or be 'arranged.' But two people decided... they wouldn't listen to those rules, as anyone can date who they want... it's best to date the person of opposite personalities than you.
The woman who stood tall on her bright pink platforms flipped a few switches, the stores bright lights came on altering the strip that it was open. The store Sew & Sell had opened just 5 months ago, mainly getting women who asked for pretty gowns for their daughters but nothing for themselves. The owner was a 25 year old black woman from America, she was into the kawaii style so it was very bright colors... mainly pink.
Her short black hair was in a bob, but some days she would wear wigs to spice her outfits up a bit. Her name was Cearra Moss, a bright young lady who had a degree in fashion and working on getting one in business. She could speak 3 different languages beside English, she was independent, respectful, and stood up for what was right. She was even apart of a group that went against the situation in Dongju, who would really be okay with being forced into an arrangement.
Cearra worked the shop by herself, mainly cause no one else wanted to be embarrassed or caught working there. She didn't mind being alone anyway but the fact she couldn't even get 1 employee was silly.
She sat in the middle of the shop folding the shirts and pants for the display tables, the different shades of pinks, blues, whites were in different boxes. She wore a white shirt with a light pink skirt with suspenders, and her shoes were the same but different colors. One shoe was white and the other being pink to match the skirt. Cearra had a pink hello kitty bandaid over her nose, strawberry earrings, and a silver necklace with her name on it.
As she was folding coffee bean by Travis Scott played softly over the speakers, she almost didn't hear the door opening... her first customer today. "Hello! Welcome to Sew & Sell, I'll be with you in a second" she heard a woman hum then lightly scold someone with her "I told you to not wear all this black!" It made Cearra look back at them. It was a woman with her hair in a ponytail, she wore a white dress with white tennis shoes, a guy next to her wearing all black and covered his face with a black mask.
"Hello I'm Cearra! How may I help you this morning?" The older woman did a polite smile "Do you sell anything for ages 7 through 9? My daughter is growing day by day and she needs a dress for the sweetheart pageant!" Cearra was shocked, they did those pageants here too? It always happened around Valentine's Day when 2 kids would get picked from their classes and go to a pageant dressed as the love holiday.

"Sure thing! What's the look you're going for?" She started explaining what she wanted, saying she needed it by the 12th. Cearra listened but her eyes would slowly peek over the quiet man by the door, he sat in the chairs and kept looking down at his chunky shoes. It was something about the pale man that caught Cearra's eyes, maybe cause he was different like her... maybe, just maybe.
"Thank you! I'll have it ready by then and I'll give you a call Mrs. Min!" Cearra smiled brightly as she waved the duo away, she found out that was the pale man's mother... she just wished she had got his name. For the next week Cearra focused on making the young girls dress, she even had a few other clients who came in to buy things... only for their children though.
A young woman had walked in and envied the fact Cearra dressed differently, really wanting to do the same but was scared cause of the government. That reminded Cearra! She had to visit the city hall at 9am for the protest... she wouldn't stop doing this until the government decided to change these laws.
Cearra made her way to the city hall with her sign in hand saying "Let us be who we are!" In pretty colors and of course.... glitter. Her baby blue crop top showed off her waist line, the blue plaid skirt and doll shoes with lace shoes showed her kiddie side but it was cute. Cearra saw many people with their signs; people who wore browns, greens, pastels, and a small group of men wearing black. It was 4 guys standing off to themselves, one had a poster but the other 3 must've been there for emotional support.
She squinted a bit to see that one of the guys looked familiar, she almost gasped when noticing the same pale hand removing his beanie to fix his brown hair. Cearra went towards the crowd finding a friend of hers who was deeply into cottagecore, she owned a lovely garden cafe that was actually popular. "Hey do you know those guys over there?" Cearra asked her friend JiHae "Oh those are the guys who hang around the alleys near my cafe! They're pretty nice, just very quiet" Cearra nodded while the protest began to start.
The group of young people would walk around and peacefully shout out how they wanted freedom to be themselves and not be forced into marriage. Cearra saw the 4 men walking around but the one she recognized was just walking... fidgeting a bit, was he nervous? The crowd had calmed down for a snack break, people passing out mini sandwiches and juice boxes.. the pale man had sat off from everyone.
Cearra grabbed another set of snacks and walked over the man "Hello again!" He looked up and she could see his dark feline eyes, they were sharp but cute. His voice was deep but soothing to the ears, he spoke low but good enough to hear him. "I was the one in the shop? It was very much pink and white?" He furrowed his brows so Cearra chuckled "I'm the one making your sisters dress" he oh'd and nodded
I nodded then handed him the snacks "They're free to people who participated which you did... very quietly... but we're glad you came anyway" she smiled very sweetly, the man reached up grabbing the snacks easily. His large veiny hands that held many dark silver and black rings caught Cearra's eyes... she wore rings too but they were more girly and cute. His were tough, rigid, and edgy... it described him from what she could see. "I'm Cearra and you are?" She carefully sat next to him, thankfully wearing shorts under her skirt.

she said the same, they both held a light convo that was very comfortable between them. Even when they didn't speak and just eat... it was oddly comforting that Cearra could peacefully nap around him. They exchanged numbers before parting ways, they both deeply hoped to see more of each other.
The next time she saw Yoongi was when his mother came to get the dress, they did little nods to each other and the next time was at the pageant. The mother was sweet enough to invite Cearra since she wanted to see how well the dress fit her daughter, the little girl even won the pageant.
Days, weeks, and months started flying by and the summer season had finally approached... Cearra was happy knowing she could meet her crush a lot more. They decided to meet up at a local restaurant called The Bamboo Genie, an elder man who went by PD nim owned the place. He was known by everyone in town for being the sweetest possible man to meet. Cearra and Yoongi were sitting at a table more towards the back where they wouldn't get much attention, the place wasn't packed but wasn't exactly empty.
"So glad we can meet often now" she said to the man who sipped the white wine, he nodded Cearra could feel her cheeks growing warm. The entire brunch they did subtle touches; finally getting to where they held hands and smiled so bright, they felt happier than anything. she furrowed her brows "Why Yoongi?" She more than likely knew why but wanted to hear it from him.
Cearra carefully listened to Yoongi, he was right, they were different from what the government wanted them to be. "It's hard... but if we truly want this to bloom into something else...we'll fight through the thorns" she gripped his hand lovingly... Yoongi looked into her gentle eyes, feeling the pull towards her. Cearra could feel it to as she leaned in and softly pressed her lips against his.
The kiss wasn't rushed and didn't grow heated, it was sweet and felt like little sparks around them. When they pulled away they couldn't stop looking in each other's eyes, rubbing their noses together with little giggles. Not realizing someone was watching them.... and not the good kind of watching either.
For 2 weeks Cearra didn't hear from Yoongi and vice versa... why did the lovers suddenly stop talking?
It's because Yoongi's father was visiting the diner and happened to see his disobedient son kissing a woman who didn't fit their standards. It made it worse when the father worked under the Dongju government... he was going to speak to the governor and enforce stricter laws. This caused the couple to forcefully break up and block each other's numbers... they were heart broken to the core. Being told that being different was weird and if they followed standards then maybe the dad would've accepted them.
Cearra could barely function properly, she became slower when it came to sewing and didn't open as much as she used to. Yoongi was forced to stay home and dress differently, the parents working on finding him someone to marry. Why was this so hard for them... why couldn't they just be happy together? Why did people want them to split so bad... just cause they weren't similar to everyone?
As September approached, another protest was happening but Cearra nor Yoongi came... Cearra didn't have the energy and Yoongi wasn't allowed to go. JiHae being the tough angel she was decided to snap sense back into her friends head, she drove over the woman's apartment with a goal in mind. After banging on the door, Cearra opened up, she wore her pink and grey hoodie over sweats but looked exhausted.
"We're not gonna have this happening anymore!" JiHae shouted as she stormed through the apartment, it was still tidy but you could tell Cearra barely did chores as much as she used to. "You and Yoongi are growing these problems and y'all already giving up?!" Cearra put her head down "We can't do anything Ji... his parents won't even let him out the house" she only knew this because of his friends she met, Namjoon, Jungkook, and Hoseok.
"Didn't you say of the love was to bloom then you would walk through those thorns! Well right now you both are trapped in the maze of thorns and can't get out!" JiHae was right, Cearra and Yoongi were blindly walking through this maze and couldn't find each other or an exit. "Do you want him? Do you like him? Don't you want the relationship to work?" Cearra nodded slowly "No speak up! Tell me you want it to work!" Cearra did some deep breaths.
"I want us to work... I want us to work... we're gonna work! Regardless of his damn father, I'm gonna get my Yoongi back!" Cearra stood up and marched into her room to change, JiHae did a celebratory dance as her phone dinged. Hoseok text her saying Yoongi was in it to win it... they were gonna make it work, if not for them but others.
Cearra and JiHae made their way to the city hall, the protest still going on, and there she spotted Yoongi with his friends. They both smiled at each other, wanting to hold each other but his parents were right behind him with scowls on their face. "We're gonna make this happen!" Cearra stomped towards one of the leaders to grab the megaphone, she whispered to everyone to go live on different social media accounts. She walked towards the steps as everyone began pulling their phones out, Cearra glancing over everyone with dedication in her eyes.
"Hello to everyone and the people who are watching... my name is Cearra moss and I'm deeply into the kawaii style as you can see!" She took a little pause before speaking again. "I was in a relationship with a man who's style is different from me... he's my opposite but he's my love! I love how he's different from me, it makes me want to learn more about him and vice versa when it comes to me." Cearra paced back and forward, the doors behind her opening as the governor came out.
"The small city of Dongju forced their traditions down our throats! Making us dress alike, act similar, and force us into marriages we don't want just because we are different!" Cearra was being passionate about this subject, almost a million people watching what was happening on their phones. "I'm in love with someone who was taken from me... his parents forcing him to be someone else and marry some person he'll never come to terms to love! This is inhumane... this isn't right!"
The small crowd agreeing with her "We should be free enough to date who we want... or we'll come together to abandon this city! Let the old people keep their tradition to themselves!" The crowd screamed yeah and cheered at Cearra's words. The governor walked down towards and spoke loud enough it reached the megaphone.
"Stop this instant! It's not that hard to comply to our laws...bdon't make this hard for yourselves!" She shook her head at the older man. "How would you feel if you were forced to be something else? Hmm... let's tell the town why you really don't have children..." the man almost went pale at Cearra, she couldn't have known why... but she did. "You don't have children because you don't even like your wife! You were forced to date her... you only show affection in front of cameras to make you look good!"
The crowd gasped, they were told the wife couldn't have children...bbut really it's cause the man couldn't even see her in that type of way. He was married to a stranger so he treated her that way. "We don't want to be like you and her... we want our own love... but if you can't understand that, then you shouldn't be for the people" everyone cheered behind Cearra, even Yoongi teared up, he was proud of his girlfriend.
By the month of November the governor came to his senses, not only did he divorce his wife but he allowed everyone to date whoever they wanted. They could dress however... he should no longer be the only town in Daegu forcing his people to be the way traditions were back in the days.
Cearra and Yoongi were able to date publicly but his parents still disapproved of them, neither of them cared anymore. They continued to date and even decided to move to Gatoori which was closer to the border of Gwanju. They made it to the international news, showing how passionate they were about love being love.
You didn't need to be similar in order to date someone... being different from someone or people was the best, cause you have more to learn about the person you loved.
Even on their YouTube channel they made sure to carry their message to anyone, young or old. "Don't be afraid to step out of the box... you could probably meet someone who can show you a new way of life. It's nothing wrong with dating someone you love; no matter the race, gender, or cultural background!"
She smiled at her fiancée who watched her with heavy admiration. "You and that person are like magnets... because opposites attract best."
A/n ~ I tend to put deep messages in my stories... don't be shy to love who you want! Dress the way you, you don't have to be rich in order to dress that way!
Love is love baby.... as long as it's healthy and you're happy... then don't worry about what anyone else has to say! :)

Among other things, a story about growth, grit, and being better than the person you were yesterday. Here's my rambling on why I'm writing Journey West 5000. Journey West 5000 is my crazy ambitious writing project to adapt a classic epic called "Journey to the West" for a global, modern audience. It's a sci-fi story disguised as fantasy, and has some road trip + monster of the week elements (as does the original Journey to the West). No system, definitely no harem, gradual power progression. Hmm, what else can I put here so potential readers know what to expect? My writing style for now is mostly "show don't tell", because I believe that readers don't need to have everything pointed out to them, and that they should be allowed to make up their own minds about characters based on the actions of those characters. I'm also trying to be less long-winded (a weakness pointed out by some friends) in order to write according to something Neil Gaiman said, which is to write as though I'm the one who has to pay for every word, not the reader. This will bring down my chapter word counts, and might drive away potential readers, but I believe there's value in learning to compress and be concise. All chapters posted here will have been edited. Constructive criticism, comments, and feedback would be very much welcome and appreciated. Please, please help point out any typos or grammatical mistakes, I'm striving to minimize those as much as possible. Above all, I hope you enjoy my story.
