《The Devil's Love》Playing with Fire: Chapter 22: Sarah

The soft patter of a voice echoed from the bathroom, I tiptoed to the door and listened.

"She doesn't know and I would like to keep it that way for the time being. I do not like to keep secrets from her but in this instance it is necessary. Everything has to be perfect tomorrow or the plan will fail."

Anton was warmongering about tomorrow again. I was about to move to the kitchen and make a coffee when someone pressed the buzzer for the door. My body froze and as the bathroom door opened I looked at Anton. He shook his head, quietly indicating that I was not to answer the door.

Then my house phone rang and I looked at the open window and felt the dread. The answering machine picked it up and the dread became worse.

"Sarah." my bitch of a sister called out.

The shrill of her voice echoed through the apartment.

"Are you home? I'm at the door. Ooh, thank you." she said sweetly.

I heard the sound of the door clunking closed, I looked at Anton.

"Your sweetie neighbor let me in, he's such a doll."

I rolled my eyes, Anton grinned.

"Are you home, I hope you're not avoiding me."

Of course I am, mostly because I hate you and I've got enough nonsense in my life without you adding to it.

"Open the door, Sarah. I saw the window and I know you're home."

Shit. Anton looked at the ceiling with defeat and then his eyes met mine, a wicked grin crossing his face.

He ruffled my hair a little and then moved to the bed, messing the sheets. After divesting us of everything except a shirt and pants for him and my dress for me, he looked around the room.

The cow knocked on the door.

"Open up."

Anton grinned and walked me backward to the bed, making me sit down. He then turned, undoing a few buttons and walked over to the door. Slowly he opened it and peered through the gap.

"Yeah?"

"Who are you?"

The phone disconnected from the answering machine as Anton left the question unanswered.

"You first."

"I'm Allison, Sarah's sister. Is she here?"

"Yeah, we're kind of busy at the moment. Come back later."

He went to push the door shut but the thing pushed on the door and moved him out of the way. She walked in with so much attitude it wasn't funny. The designer handbag was hanging on the arm, pumps that looked way too high and a tight black dress that covered the nearly orange spray tan. Hard to believe that we were related.

"I see you're still living in a shoebox for an apartment."

She paused and looked around the room, frowning at the racks of clothing and me looking rather disheveled. Or maybe it was the just rolled out of bed look.

Having been subjected to Anton's quiet movements, I knew how his sneak attacks could create some serious shock. I watched as he moved with stealth across the floor, never making a sound. He was like one of the big cats stalking its prey, his eyes pinned to the back of her as he moved with fluid grace.

"Is there a reason you've turned up unannounced?"

Allison shrieked and clutched at her chest, turning to look at Anton.

"I don't need to call before coming to see my sister."

"Yes you do, it's called manners. I told you that we were busy and you've barged in here without an invitation."

"Who are you?" she sneered as her hands went to her hips.

Gee, I would have thought it would be obvious but then again, Allison has never been the brightest of sparks.

"Anton, Sarah's boyfriend."

Allison snorted with laughter, mockingly taunting me in her own way. Anton looked at her without a single emotion on his face which was not good.

"I don't recall saying anything funny."

"Sarah doesn't have a boyfriend, never has and never will."

"Is that so?" he hummed derisively. "You know, I don't recall being classed as imaginary. I was of the belief that I am in fact, real. Am I not real, do I not stand before you and tell you that I am in fact what I say that I am?"

Allison offered nothing but a weird frown like she couldn't comprehend him.

"And not that it is any of your business but for the purposes of shutting your bitch of a mouth, Sarah was not a virgin before we had sex so I'd say that she has in fact had at least one boyfriend before me."

"Oh, you are going to hell Sarah."

Anton raised his eyebrows at her, rather amused and stunned at the statement. I will be going to hell but not in the way that she imagined it.

"Sex before marriage is a sin."

As Anton laughed Allison looked at him rather shocked.

"So is envy." He offered with a dark tone as he looked at her. "And greed, lust. Shall we continue? You are no longer innocent so do not come here casting your judgment over Sarah."

Her mouth hung open for a second and then clamped shut as her eyes narrowed at him. She turned to me with disgust. Before she could say a word, Anton continued.

"Are you done with insulting your sister because you've interrupted a rather important time for us and if you don't leave then I'm going to haul your arse out to the street."

"You cannot be serious! And so rude, is it necessary to swear at me?"

"I'm afraid it is and yes I do find it rather necessary."

Allison looked at me expectedly, waiting for me to defend her. It was never going to happen.

"Well I'd like to say it's been a pleasure meeting you but I would be lying."

Anton offered a smile that I'd seen before, it was one that kept a person captivated.

"And I might be a lot of things but I am not a liar, so if you don't mind."

He gestured to the door and Allison moved with zombie-like movements, sluggishly sliding her feet over the floor.

"Next time do call first or better yet, don't bother coming here at all."

"Sure." She said, unable to tear away from him.

Anton snapped his finger in front of her face, Allison blinked hard and frowned as she looked around.

"What the..."

"Hell?" Anton offered with a grin. "Yes I do agree with you Allison, it is rather like hell having to put up with unannounced visitors but we do our best and endeavor to deal with their nonsense. As I said, make sure you call first before you decide to visit."

He leaned in and whispered something to her and as he stood upright again, he slammed the door shut in her face.

Anton turned on his heels with a broad grin and walked over to me. All I could do was giggle as he planted lots of kisses all over me, pushing me back onto the bed.

"What did you whisper to her?"

He rolled onto the bed beside me, dragging me onto my side to face him.

"I said that you are a beautiful soul, a wonderful woman and a demon in the sack and that she had every right to be jealous of you because she will never be as great as you are."

I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him hard.

"Did I ever tell you that you are amazing?"

"Not nearly enough." He said dryly.

With another little chuckle, I pulled back, looking into those reddish brown eyes that always enthralled me.

"You are amazing."

"So are you."
