《The Devil's Love》Queen of Hell: Chapter 4: Sarah

We had moved to the table, the breakfast that we did not have time for at the hotel now in front of us as I continued to push Anton for more information.

"So why wouldn't he let go of me?"

"You were being used as leverage. If I didn't sign over the earth then he would have removed you from my life."

"Like kill me?"

The toast fell from my fingers as I stared at him.

"It is not beyond any of my kind to remove a life if the moment requires it. Of course, he has to have a good reason as needless removal is punished so he wasn't really going to hurt you. He just wants to piss me off. Michael would wipe out a lot more if it meant that this world was safe from me. But do not think that I would not stop him, Sarah, you are all that I care about now and he knows that."

"That's why he did it."

Anton nodded as he sat back on the chair.

"Not that there was ever an issue about ownership, I did not care to be the true owner of this world. It was just the spoils of the non-existent war. Of course, he did not know that. All he would have known is that the devil owned earth and he was about to get his arse kicked for it."

I chuckled even though I shouldn't. This man was creating a wicked monster out of me. Laughing at the misfortune of another, how terrible.

"Did you put hidden clauses in the document?"

Anton stopped eating and looked at me, raising an eyebrow as he slowly began to chew the toast again. He smiled and offered nothing, his eyes filled with an amusement that told so much. Now I wanted to know what he had put on the document, it was amusing to him and had annoyed Michael. It must have been good.

Our brief breakfast was over, Anton had to go to the underworld to ensure all was well. I wasn't sure if Michael turning up had spooked him but he seemed a little more on edge when he spoke of returning to his world.

I looked out the window and saw Igor walking down the street, I grabbed my things quickly and set out to meet him at the restaurant.

"Good morning my lady." he offered with a tip of his head.

"Work Igor, I'm Sarah here, remember?"

Igor chuckled and as he looked over my shoulder the smile died away.

"What do you want?"

"Now my dear Igor, is that really how to greet a person?"

I turned to the familiar voice, seeing Michael.

"Sarah, how lovely to see you again."

Anton wasn't here and I wondered if Michael had planned it this way. Freak Anton out, send him running to his world and leave Sarah behind for the unknown.

"I have perused the document and the changes that Anton has made Sarah, I must say that I am impressed and disappointed. But of course, it is to be expected when dealing with the devil. Be a darling and deliver this letter to him."

A normal looking envelope was held out, a discolored pale brown similar to the parchment from earlier. The wax seal was purple, pressed with a crest that I could not make out clearly.

"Is trick my lady, do not take the envelope."

"Igor, do be a good boy and go away."

Igor stepped out and in front of me, putting himself between Michael and me.

"Master will accept your letter in person. Is bad form to trick master's love when she does not know. You wish to have ass kicked again Michael?"

"Hm, somehow I think that you won't win this one Igor."

I looked at the bulking frame of my protector, watching as Michael backed away.

"As you wish demon, tell your master that all is not well."

His eyes met mine with a dark grin that made me want to shrink away with fear.

"And I will have my vengeance."

Michael walked backward for a few steps and then turned, walking down the street as if he was a normal human being. How the world would freak out if they knew his true nature.

"Open the door, my lady, let us be free of this view."

I opened the door and turned off the alarm, finally beginning to freak out.

"What was the letter, Igor?"

"Could be many things. Likely to not be good if he approaches you and not master. You know now, never accept anything from angels. Demons and angels always at war, always tricking."

"But how would I know one from any human?"

"Eyes, always purple eyes. They can hide them from humans but they cannot from us."

Demon staff walked through the doors, Igor gestured for me to follow.

"You stay with master or me until Michael goes away for good. Will take time, he still angry at last time master tricked him."

"It happens a lot I take it?"

Igor grinned as he began to prep the food. I lifted myself onto the bench beside him and watched as he chopped the food at a fast speed.

"Master likes to annoy Michael, he angers so easily. Is not for angels to be angry, supposed to be good and pure and master makes him break the ideals of his kind."

"You had a run in with Michael, didn't you?"

He nodded as he scraped the food into a container, continuing with the next lot of food.

"When the big battle begins, master calls for all demons to join him. All temptations are left for another day and demons stand by their master. It was not so long ago when master last called us. I cannot recall the day nor the time but the humans were talking about the moon a lot. Did they find little green men on it?"

"Not that I was aware of." I laughed. "Maybe when they first landed on the moon?"

Igor stopped chopping as he thought about it, the frown burrowing deep into his tanned skin.

"Is possible. The world had been quiet for a long time, master grow bored and decided to change locks on certain gates to certain places. Maybe he changes the right locks and maybe he changed the wrong ones. It depends on who you ask."

I saw the smirk on his face and as he looked at me he laughed a little.

"Master is a trickster, when he is bored then you should be worried."

"I'll keep that in mind."

"So maybe locks to a place were changed, how master was able to do it no one knows. Master will never tell. I think he wants to do again so he not reveals his ways. You imagine a pretty gate with a big lock on it, one that can be locked but is never that way. Always open, always available. But then trickster comes along and maybe changes it so that it is no longer open and locks it with a new lock, keeping key as a joke. Then sits back and watches as comedy show begins."

Igor's recanting of the tale of how Anton caused mischief made me realize how little I knew of him. I knew the loving side, a little jovial and yesterday I saw a little bit of evil but never did I think that he could be like this.

"Michael was first at the gate, expects to open for him and smacks straight into it and breaks his nose. Master sitting on fence, laughing at misfortune. More arrive and more expect gate to open for them, Michael in trouble for not staying to warn or figure out why gate not open for him."

"Where was he?"

"Getting nose fixed, stopping the blood."

He nodded as I looked at him, suitably shocked. It was an odd situation for him I suppose, blood pouring out he probably thought that getting it fixed was the right thing to do. Then again, warning others might have been a good thing to do or maybe asking why it was locked in the first place would be ideal.

"Master portray Michael as a vain idiot who does not care for others, just himself. When Michael realize who is behind the trick he implores others to rise against master and make him pay. But master is always ready."

Igor talked, casually waving the large knife around as he regaled the events. Still, he continued on chopping and putting the food into their varying containers.

"They try sneak attack but they do not know that master has little birdies that sit in trees and watch land. Sensors in the land feels lots of footsteps or just a few. Is necessary for when witches enter the land, cannot let them walk around unchecked. So master knows when lots of feet tread in his world and he calls all demons home for an urgent need. I have been in battle before, I have seen terrible things. Demons and angels do not fight fair, is a war that should never be."

"But sometimes it is necessary."

Igor and I turned to Anton who was standing at the door.

"War stories at such an early hour Igor?"

"Michael was here my lord, he tried to trick master's love to take the envelope."

"Bastard." Anton hissed.

Anton frowned as he pursed his lips, thinking as he paced the floor.

"I say to Sarah that she with you or myself until Michael go away, is okay?"

"Yes Igor, that is a good idea. I will be back in a minute."

Then Anton walked into the storeroom as he pulled out his phone.

"And hello to you too," I whispered sadly.
