Anna checks her phone one last time before turning it off. It has been three weeks since dinner at the Morretti house. Marcello hasn't called, texted, emailed, smoke signalled or shown up. Anna was going crazy thinking about him. It was all she could think about.
When Thanksgiving break in classes came around Anna decided to go home. It had been a year and a half since she had set foot in Vegas. Anna was hoping the time away from Boston would help forget about a certain mobster.
The flight to Vegas is a boring one like always. Knowing it won't be nearly as cold in Vegas Anna opted for her ripped skinny jeans, M.I.T sweat shirt and leather jacket. As she walks through the arrivals gate carrying her four laptop bags and rolling her suitcase she spots a man with the sign 'Carmichael'. Waving him down, the man takes her suitcase and leads her to a waiting limo. Welcome home. Anna thinks to herself. This is her parents life. Living in luxury wasn't Anna's thing.
"Your parents asked me to take you to the hotel." The driver says.
"Sure whatever." Anna says trying not to be too rude. The drive from the airport to the strip is a short one. Just long enough for Anna to turn on her phone.
Another string of missed calls and messages arrive.

Anna sends a quick 'I'm in Vegas.' message as the car pulls to a stop outside The Carmichael Grand. She slips her phone in her back pocket and hops out of the car. The driver holds the door for her. He tells her he will take her suitcase to her parents house and Anna thanks him before heading inside.

It doesn't take long for her parents to find her. Anita and Jacob appear arm in arm walking towards her across the casino floor. Her father in a three piece suit and her mother in a fancy dress. They both hug Anna at the same time before stepping back to take in their daughter.
"Anastasia what happened to the clothes I sent you?" Her mother asks concerned.
"They are in my wardrobe."
"Do you wear them?"
"Sometimes."
Anita Carmichael 'tsks' at her daughter.
"Where is this guy of yours?" Anna's dad asks. Anna feel her heart sinks just thinking of Marcello. She doesn't know how she let herself get so deep. Two days with him and the guy left her completely scrambled.
"He isn't my guy dad."
"But he said he was your boyfriend!" Anita fusses over her daughter.
"Well he's not now!" Anna snaps. "Look I'm going to see Tommy. I'll see you guys at home." Holding on tight to her laptops Anna walks passed her parents towards the security room. Tommy, head of security for the Grand is her best friend in Vegas. He is about fifteen years older than her and her absolutely hero.
"Miss you really can't be back here." A guy about Anna's age stops her as she pushes through the staff doors.
"Uh yeah I can."
"I'm sorry but you are going to have to leave." The guy says again pushing Anna's shoulders. Anna looks up at the security camera placed above them. Anna raises her middle finger towards the camera.
"Tommy tell this noob to let me pass!" She shouts.
"What the hell?" The guy steps back from the noise. Next second his radio sounds.
"Carter let her pass. That is Anastasia Carmichael, the boss's daughter."

Anna rolls her eyes as the guy fumbles to apologise. She continues on her way. Carter runs behind her trying to catch up.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't realise who-"
"Dude! Chill!" Anna stops suddenly and Carter runs into her back. "You are new obviously."
"Yeah just started. I graduated a semester early. I.T at CalTech."
"I.T at M.I.T." Anna says. She pushes open the doors to the security room where Tommy greets her with a hug.
"Little Carmichael oh how I've missed you!"
"I've missed you too Tommy."
"Well, you have met Carter. He is our new I.T nerd. Not quite as good as you but he is close."
"No one comes close Tommy." Anna crosses her arms over her chest.
"No one carries four laptops around with them either. What are you planning to hack while you're here?"
"Nothing." Anna says quickly.
"This girl," Tommy starts talking to Carter. "Is on the C.I.A and F.B.I's watch list."
"Not anymore. Hacked my record clean. I'm too quick they don't even see my go in."
"Impressive." Carter smiles at her.
"Carter take Anna for a cup of coffee you are done for the day anyway."
"I know my way around Tommy." Anna says.
"Carter take Anna for a cup of coffee." Tommy repeats himself. Anna rolls her eyes and follows Carter down to the bar.
The two take a seat in one of the booths. Anna's phone rings in her pocket. She pulls it out to check the caller I.D, Marcello Morretti.
You made me wait three weeks!
Anna silences her phone pushing it back in her pocket.
"Do you need to get that?" Carter asks.
"Nope."
Marcello paces his office waiting for Anastasia to pick up her phone. The call disconnects and he throws his phone.
"Is everything ok Mr Morretti?" Jean his terrified secretary enters the room.
"Get in touch with my pilot. I want to be in Vegas by tonight."

Tower of Somnus
When humanity first encountered alien life, we were judged and found wanting. The Galactic Consensus interviewed our leaders and subjected us to a battery of psychological tests to determine our progress as a society. They found us to be selfish, wasteful, impulsive, and boorish neighbors. Earth was blockaded and our collective encounter with our extrasolar neighbors rapidly faded from memory. All they left behind was a hypercomm relay and a handful of subscriptions to a massively multiplayer game that participants played in their sleep. The Consensus said that it would let us interact with our neighbors in a controlled setting. That it would teach us to be better members of the galactic community. The megacorporations that controlled Earth ignored the game until they learned that the powers earned from clearing dungeons were just as real when day broke. Magic, supernatural abilities and rumors exploded from nothing and a subscription to The Tower of Somnus became a status symbol. Katherine ‘Kat’ Debs doesn’t have much, but it could be worse. Born in an arcology, she was assigned a job in the megacorporation that raised her almost as soon as she could work. Despite the stability of her corporate life, she wanted something more. A chance to claw her way up the rigid social and financial ladder to make something of herself. A chance that wouldn’t come naturally to someone as familiar with dark alleyways and the glint of steel as she was with office work and corporate niceties.Book One is up on Kindle Unlimited as of 7/6/22 - https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B0B2X3L8H5
