"So do you like Boston?" Carter asks. Anna has been sitting with Carter now for thirty minutes and she wants to tear her hair out. He is a sweet guy but man can he talk!
"Better than Vegas." Anna laughs in response.
"Do you have a boyfriend?"
"No." Anna says angrily. Three weeks ago she did, even if he was only fake/a possibility.
"So it would be ok if maybe I asked you out?"
"Oh Carter..." oh shit! "You are sweet and all but I don't think that would be very appropriate. My dad is your boss..."
"Right sorry." Carter blushes and Anna decides now is probably a good time to cut their coffee 'date' short.
"I'm going to head home. I'll see you around yeah?"
"I'll be here." Carter grins. "Can I get a car for you?"
"Thanks Carter but I know my way around. I'll head down to dad's garage."
Anna finds her car right where she left it a year and a half a go. Her jeep. It is the perfect desert car. Black with a soft top. It was always Anna's dream car and she bought it herself with no help form the parents.
The keys are on the hook as expected and Anna jumps in throwing her laptops on the passenger seat. Speeding out of the garage she pulls onto the strip. The Carmichael mansion is in the other side of the desert. About a thirty minute drive away. Anna's phone rings about six more times but she continues to ignore it.
Parking her car in the driveway Anna grabs her laptop bags and jumps out. Heading straight inside she plops down on the couch in the lounge room. It isn't long before her mother joins her.

"Anastasia can we talk about the guy."
"There is nothing to talk about." Anna snaps.
"Please?"
"We went on a couple of dates and then he stopped calling me."
"I'm sorry Tesoro." Anita wraps her arms around her daughter.
"Don't worry about it Ma."
"Why don't you go upstairs? Have a shower and relax. I'll start on dinner."
Anna smiles nodding at her mum's request. No matter how much she may hate Vegas she loves her parents.
Anna can't help but think of Marcello. He has called her seven times this afternoon all of which she has ignored. Anna thought they had a lovely dinner together. He drove her home, walked her to her door, kissed her goodnight and then nothing! Marcello told Anna he was going to prove himself to her. All he proved was that he is a jerk. Three weeks! Anna thought, he hasn't called in three weeks!
It is around seven when Anita calls Anna down to dinner. Anna trudges down the stairs in a pair of black tights and an oversized 'Carmichael Grand' sweatshirt. As she walks into the dining room she freezes when she hears a lot of voices.
"I can't wait for you to meet our Annie." Jacob Carmichael says.
"You will love her!" Anita adds. With a sigh Anna enters and all eyes turn to her. "Well I assure you she own better clothes." Anita say narrowing her eyes at Anna.
"Maybe if you had informed me of guests I might have worn something different." Anna mutters.
"She looks wonderful!" The older man's voice booms. "Antonio Rossi, a pleasure to meet you Anastasia." He says holding out with hand.
"You too Mr Rossi and please it is just Anna." Anna says politely shaking his hand.

"Please Antonio is fine! This is my wife Andrea and my son Alexander." Antonio points at the two people beside him.
"It is nice to meet you." Anna says faking a smile. If there is one thing Anna hates more than meeting new people it is meeting new people when she wasn't expecting it.
"Well dinner isn't too far away. Anastasia why don't you show Alexander the rest of the house." Anita gives Anna a look saying 'do it or I'll kill you.' Anna sighs leading the stranger out of the dining room.
"So this is the house." Anna say with zero enthusiasm.
"You don't like me do you?" Alexander asks.
"It's not you Alexander..." Anna replies. "I don't like this sort of social situation. I'm nothing like my parents."
"Fair enough." He smiles at her. "And call me Alex."
"Sure, Alex. So where would you rather be tonight?"
"With my girlfriend." He says sadly.
"You have a girlfriend? But mum said that we..." Anna runs out of words and Alex laughs.
"Yeah well my parents don't know about Jess. She isn't Italian."
"Oh sorry."
"All good. What about you where would you rather be?"
"Boston." Anna sighs. "But I had to get out of there. I have no idea what I was thinking coming home. I should have picked Paris."
"Why did you have to get out?"
"Guy trouble." Anna says quickly and Alex doesn't ask anymore questions. The two talk about college and their hobbies before joining their parents for dinner.
"Mr Morretti if you'd like to take your seat we are about to land."
"Thank you." Marc push his phone into his pocket and sit down in the closest seat buckling his seat belt.
"The car will be waiting for you on the tarmac. Where are you staying sir?"
"Carmichael Grand."

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx. When Yezzu first sent his sons to the realm of men, they brought with them the magic of the gods. They created the three kingdoms we now have today being Dremshen, Ex'ol, and Kantillion. In the five thousand years since the gods left, much has changed. Great wars were fought, Universities were built, civilizations were created. One thing remained after the gods' departure though, their powers. Today, the balance of crafting the three gods brought has shifted. In the beginning, each had the same skill as the other, but the magic that was passed down through the millennia has diminished. The struggle for power that started long ago is coming to a defining moment. Plots of war and assassination are being weaved. Don't despair, for we may yet be saved from the disasters to come. Our hope lies in three young crafters. The first is William Divus, who sets out from his small village into the Dremshen Kingdom to study crafting after his father's passing. His questions about his father and his quest for knowledge drive him. Next comes Ehzahn Obasi, an Ex'olian thief with unparalleled skill. He steals for the thrill, no longer needing the rewards that come with it. He has just achieved his lifelong dream, but he will soon learn how much he underestimated the fallout from his daring theft. The last is Ki Soru, the niece of a powerful duke. She showed promise with crafting at a young age, so she had the best training the Kantillion Kingdom had to offer. Ten years have passed since her lessons began, leaving the king unsatisfied with the results. Her life is upended when her new teacher arrives, revealing a secret kept from her that changes her whole life. These three are our heroes. They were born in separate kingdoms under vastly differing upbringing, but each with their own part to play in the challenges to come.
