《Cigarette Duet (Jonah x Adam)》Chapter 4

Jonah left the bathroom finally, wearing the clothes Adam had given him. The clock read about 12:15 P.M. in the afternoon. "Ah, I was wondering what the hell you were doing in there." Adam laughed at his own joke making Jonah flustered. "Shut up! I keep forgetting how your shower works, that's all."
"Well, at least my clothes fit you, considering you're taller than me."
"They're comfortable, I might steal them! Hah!"
Adam just freezes up and Jonah walks past him, heading back to the living room and flopping on the couch dramatically. "Adam you GOTTA get a better couch, I hate sleeping on this thing. Won't you ever think of your poor best friend? How cruel!" Adam had made his way to the living room by now and rolled his eyes at the dramatic ass teen. "Where do you propose I let you sleep, then?"
"I mean, your bed is pretty comfortable."
Adam just kinda stood there, face red as all fuck. Jonah genuinely didn't see any issue with what he said, not even thinking about what it could imply. Well, who would even think about what it would imply unless they liked the other person?... "Hey, blondie, answer meeee!"
"Fuck- answer what?"
"Can I sleep in your bed tonight?"
Fuck, dude. You can't just ask that...can you?
"U-Uhm, well I uhm- uh- s-sure?"
"Yay! Thanks!~"
Jonah rolled off of the couch, hitting the ground with a loud thud and a groan of pain, pulling Adam out of his anxiety and causing him to wheeze at the antics of his dumbass friend. He walked over to help Jonah off the floor, and for a minute the two just looked around. Neither of them had any idea how else to spend their time for the day. "Hey, weird question, but have you ever wanted to see fireflies? Like just dedicate a night to just...go see them?"
"No, not in particular. Why?"
"W-Well, I just...uhm, I know this...place where the fireflies come out at night...it's really uh...cool."
"Jonah, you can just ask me, if you're asking me to see them with you."
"O-Oh...well, that was my intention, yes. How about we go later today? They're not as...well, common in February but there's still some you can see."
"Cool, sounds like a plan. What do we do until then, though?"
"Uhm..." Jonah looked off to the side, trying to think of something entertaining enough to do until dark. "Actually, how about we get food? Have you eaten yet since you woke up?" Jonah shook his head no. He hated admitting that but it's not like he was trying to. He just...couldn't, because of his dad. "Then let's go get some. I'm paying this time, though."
"Like hell you are!"
"What're you gonna do if I do?"
"You forgot something, Adam."
Jonah then whipped out Adam's wallet out of the hoodie he had lended to Jonah. Fuck, I'd forgotten to take that out. "Can't pay if I have this!"
"Oh you BITCH!-"
Jonah lifted the wallet over his head and Adam jumped to try and grab it. However, he lost his footing, and ended up knocking the both of them to the floor. Adam landed on Jonah's chest, causing his brain to short-circuit briefly. Then, he saw the wallet laying just a few feet away from them and lunged at it, grabbing it before Jonah could even take a breath.

"Hah! I win, I pay."
However, Jonah didn't respond. He was still laying down, staring at the ceiling. He seemed dazed. "Shit- you okay? I-I didn't mean to do that- did you hit your head?" Jonah slowly sat up and rubbed the back of his head. "I-I'm fine- yeah, but it's no big deal."
"Fuck dude, I'm sorry, Jo."
"Don't worry about it. You win this once, only because you might tackle me again-"
"Yeah yeah whatever, let's just go already."
Adam helped Jonah up once again, Jonah grabbing his keys and making his way towards the car. Adam closed the house door behind him and Jonah, as Jonah went to the passenger side to open the door for Adam. "Why do you always do that? I'm not complaining, just notice you do it a lot." Jonah laughed and motioned all fancy-like to the interior of the car. "Well, I must open the door for the king!" Adam slugged him in the shoulder before sitting in the seat, Jonah closing the door and heading to his side of the car. He hopped in and started the engine, backing out of the driveway and driving away. "You know, we sure do live off of a lot of fast food."
"Hah! Well, I don't know about YOU but it's all I can really eat."
"Why? If you need money for something else you can just a-"
"Adam, it's not about the money. It's...other things. It's fine."
Adam shut up quickly. He wasn't used to Jonah responding this seriously. He looked out of the window and it was silent for about two minutes. In the corner of his eye, he could see Jonah reaching for a music disc, and inserting it into his radio. He'd not listened to much of the music Jonah had in his car, and he was curious...
"ALL YOU LADIES POP YOUR PUSSY LIKE THIS-"
WHAT THE FUCKING SHIT- Jonah was singing along to the RAUNCHIEST song he'd heard so far, at the top of his lungs. He was NOT expecting Jonah to be the kind of person to listen to THIS. He wasn't judging- okay he was totally judging, but what the fuck? His voice wasn't bad either, this was just...really fucking bizarre. Is this seriously what he listens to unironically? Adam glanced down at the music selection he had...yep, this is what he listened to. He also had some other genres and bands mixed in, like Def Leppard and Joan Jett and the Black Hearts. Why was THIS the song he chose? The way he sang it so shamelessly was both really concerning and...weirdly comforting. At least he felt comfortable to share his interests with him, no matter how insane they were. He just kinda stared at him throughout the whole song, shuddering whenever he got to the main verse. The song finally ended, and Jonah slowly looked over to Adam.
"So uhm..."
"Wow."
"Is- is my singing that bad?"
"No, that's actually the problem. It wasn't bad and I'm very concerned. Bravo."
"Hah! I can do better than that."
Jonah reached in for another CD, popping out the previous one and inserting the next. Adam awaited nervously.
CPR, by cupcakke was on. Are you fucking kidding me? How the fuck? The worst part is that Jonah sang EVERY LAST bit of that song, even the moans. How the fuck did he do the moans so well? This is extremely uncomfortable...yet also, kinda attractive? Ew, no, snap out of it. He just put his head in his hands and prayed for the stupid song to be over soon enough. Luckily, the song ended just as they pulled into the drive thru for the fast food place, so he couldn't put in another CD. "So, how was that one?"

"Please, never do that again. Your voice is good but that's where the issue lies."
Jonah giggled mischievously, but luckily not in the "I'm planning something" kind of way. Jonah placed their orders as Adam got lost in thought once again. Deja vu, like the last time they went to get food. As soon as they got their food (which, surprisingly, he let Adam pay for once), they parked in a nearby parking lot, same as last time. This time, however, Jonah was much more chatty. Like the normal Jonah. This relieved all the tension in Adam's body, he felt happy that his best friend was acting like himself again. Even Adam was joking around way more than usual, just relieved that he hadn't completely lost Jonah to whatever has been going on. However, Adam got a close look at Jonah's face, and noticed two slightly visible bruises, one on his left cheek and one on his nose. He wasn't able to see them before, what the fuck happened? "Adam? What's wrong?"
"Fuck- uh, what're those bruises on your face? I didn't see them earlier, they look bad."
Jonah muttered something like fuck under his breath, which just made Adam panic MORE. "Are you okay? What the fuck happened to you?" Jonah just looked around nervously, thinking of any excuse he could think of.
"Why'd you say 'fuck?'"
"Cause that's what I said when I fell off my bike-"
Both of them just stared at each other once more before they both lost it, and just had a laughing fit. "God, you're such an idiot, man. I love you, but be more careful- and wear a helmet." Adam didn't fully believe Jonah but this happened before- multiple times, actually. Once the two finished their food (with maybe or maybe not a LOT of chatting between them), they noticed it was starting to get dark.
"Shit, now's the best time to go to the spot I was mentioning."
"Huh?"
"The fireflies?"
"Ohhh, yeah. We should go then."
Jonah restarted the car and began driving to the field he'd been talking about. Adam wasn't sure what to expect, he'd never been out at night to specifically look at the fireflies. He was a bit excited, though. He thought about how nice it would be to do something like that with his parents. God, how much he wished he'd gotten to know them. He was barely a year old when he'd lost them both. That God awful night...that's why he lived alone. He wished he didn't. He'd seen Evelin's relationship with her family, and how much Jonah talked about his mom's kindness. He wished he could experience that, but he never would. He was bounced around the system until he'd had enough at 16, and got emancipated. He was always wondering what'd it be like to have such a close family. He'd never know.
The car slammed as Jonah pressed on the breaks violently. Adam looked around them, dazed, noticing they were in the middle of a field that was now dark. Jonah took the keys out of the ignition and looked at Adam. "You ready to see some cool shit?" Adam gave a slight nod and a smile, as Jonah and him exited the vehicle. Jonah turned on a flashlight he had grabbed from underneath his seat as he grabbed Adam by the arm and led him down a trail in the field. "I practically made my own trail here when I was younger. I'd go here all the time, sometimes with my mom. Mostly alone, though. It's nice to have someone else here with me."
They approached a small opening by a lake, which reflected the beautiful glow of the stars and the moon light. The silence of everything with only the sound of flowing water was deafening and dreamlike. They sat down by the water and Jonah turned off the flashlight. By then it had already gotten dark, and it was just a matter of waiting for the perfect time.
"It takes a bit of time, it's easier to see in the summer since there's more fireflies, but they're still here."
"That's fine, I can wait."
Not a moment too late, the light of the fireflies filled the air, Adam gasping at the sight. It was...gorgeous. Surreal, even. He'd never seen anything like this. The soft glow of the bugs filling the air and reflecting onto the water was a sight he'd never forget. Jonah looked as happy as he could ever be, like a little kid all over again. Both of them felt like children again, Adam felt this as a childhood memory he never had. And sharing this moment with his closest friend was something he was never gonna take for granted. It reminded him that, no matter what happens, they always had each other. He'd always have Jonah Marshall, the 6"3 boy who cared for him like no one else.
Jonah stood up and grabbed one of the fireflies in his palm, kneeling back down to show Adam. "Isn't this the coolest thing ever?! Look at these little guys! So much beauty from something so small..." Adam teared up, the moment and his emotions just hit him. Jonah noticed this and sat back down. "You okay?"
"Y-Yeah...I just...this is one of the best moments of my life, dude. Thank you for sharing this with me..."
Jonah hugged Adam, rubbing his hand on his back. "Let it all out, dude. We all need to cry sometimes, whether it's good or bad."
Adam hugged back, sobbing into Jonah's shoulder. His emotions were overwhelming, and normally he'd be embarrassed...but he truly felt cared for. Maybe he could show this to Evelin one day, he was sure she'd enjoy it. But this was about them for now.
And he wouldn't have it any other way.

World Step (Rewrite)
This is a rewrite of my story World Step. Though, in reality, this is my first serious draft. The shadows grow deeper on the planet of Whorrl even as a dark, and ancient ritual takes place within the depths of The Abyssal Mouth—a chasm of both fortune and calamity. The story follows Quintin, a Grandmaster Martial Artist from Earth, as unforeseen elements conspire against him from the depths of space. *No Harem *Strong MC, but by no means does he go through enemies without injury or at least learning something. *Throw on [Horror], and possibly [Psychological] elements. *Dark Fantasy with some [Grimdark] leanings. Notes: this will be a place where I endeavor to rewrite and fix issues. With that in mind, expect revisions, edits, and other things of that nature.
