《lightning - jonah marais》chapter one

Jonah tapped his foot anxiously as he searched through the sea of people from his seat at the airport. Despite you telling him multiple times that you could get yourself to the house from the airport, he insisted on picking you up himself. He checked his watch every thirty seconds, feeling like the minutes were passing so slowly while he waited for you. Adrenaline pumped through his veins as he spotted you walking towards him with your suitcase and a backpack on. You were in a pair of sweatpants and one of Jonah's huge sweatshirts, hair thrown up into some sort of bun and sunglasses shielding your eyes from the bright L.A. sunshine. Jonah's face lit up and he rushed over to you, you attempting to do the same but struggling with your luggage. When he was within reach you practically jumped on him, legs wrapping around his waist and him holding you to his chest. He spun you in a circle before putting you down only to hug you again. "Oh I have missed you so much, Y/N." Jonah said into your hair and you pulled back from his grip, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "I've missed you way more, Jo." you smiled. "Ready to go home?" he asked and you nodded eagerly, going to grab your suitcase. Jonah swatted your hand away and took it for you causing you to roll your eyes jokingly. You held onto Jonah's arm as the two of you walked through the airport. He put your suitcase into the trunk of his car and you hopped in the passenger seat, kicking your feet up on the dashboard. Jonah got in and started the car, laughing at you, "Go ahead, make yourself comfortable." You shoved his shoulder at his sarcasm and he connected his phone to the radio. "I will, thank you very much." You two started the twenty minute drive from LAX to the Why Don't We house. "I really did miss you." Jonah said, smiling even though he kept his eyes on the road. You smiled back and pinched his cheek, "I missed you more. So where am I staying again?" you asked. The boys didn't have a guest room but Jonah said he'd "figure it out" for you before you got here. "Well," Jonah sighed, "since you've last been here, we all kind of switched rooms so now I have my own. So if you want to stay in mine with me, you can but if not then I can pull up a cot in Daniel or Zach's room and you can have mine to yourself." You thought about your choices for a second before responding. "Jonah I don't want to kick you out of your own bedroom but is Madison gonna be okay with us sharing a room?" you asked and you noticed him grip the steering wheel a bit harder; you hit a nerve. Jonah didn't say anything and you sat up in your seat. "J," you said softly, "is there still a you and Madison?" you asked cautiously and he sighed deeply, pulling into the garage of the house. "You can stay with me. You're my best friend. Now, the boys are excited to see you so let's go before they get too impatient." he said with a soft smile. You smiled back but felt a pang of hurt in your chest due to his reaction.

You and Jonah had been bestfriends since pre-school. You grew up with him in Minnesota, living three houses away from each other your entire lives. Once his career took off, you figured that that would be the end of you and Jonah's close friendship. Contrary to your beliefs, Jonah promised you that you two would be best friends, always and forever. No amount of fame or tours could ever change that. So, you made it work: you visited him on tour, he came and saw you on breaks, you FaceTimed and texted pretty much daily. The only thing that threatened your friendship in the slightest was that you were in love with him. The two of you were extremely close and you couldn't help but fall for him. You had sleepovers, shared clothes, hung out all the time during middle and high school, cuddled, shared platonic cheek and forehead kisses, and told each other everything. Being in love with him was the only secret you'd ever kept from Jonah. You didn't even keep the fact that you didn't like his girlfriend a secret. Jonah was dating Madison Grant, a social media influencer that he met while touring in Europe. She was there for a promotional photo shoot while Why Don't We was doing interviews for the same company. They exchanged numbers, began talking and eventually became a couple. You never really liked Madison or her intentions with Jonah. She seemed to be a cookie cutter gold digger, only wanting Jonah for the clout and his debit card. You and Madison got along mainly because you never had to see each other other than when you visited Jonah. He knew how you felt about her and listened to what you had to say, but you also gave him the space to do what he wanted even if you didn't like it. Jonah loved you so much, he'd do pretty much anything for you. You two were like each other's other halves, but you wanted more. You kept these feelings down for a long time in fear of ruining the best friendship you'd ever had, but it was going to be a lot harder now. Now, you were going to be living with the Why Don't We boys at their house in L.A. and joining them for their 8 Letters tour. You were so happy to be able to see Jonah all the time and spend time with all of the guys, but you worried about having to interact with Madison and keep your feelings a secret all at the same time.
You walked into the house, immediately ambushed by the four other bandmates. Daniel got you into a crushing hug, lifting you a bit off your feet. "Hi, Dani." you said breathlessly when he put you down. "Woah, I think you cracked my back." you said laughing and Daniel smiled at you, "Oops! I missed you too much." Zach shoved in front of him and hugged your side, "I missed you more but Daniel can run faster than me." You chuckled and hugged him back, Jack joining in the hug on your other side. Corbyn came up last and hugged you, swaying you back and forth. "I missed you, and the really good pasta you make us." You scoffed lightly before squeezing a little tighter, "I missed you too, and your never ending stomach." The boys sat in the living room with you for a while, lounging around and exchanging stories from the months you weren't with them. You gushed over tour pictures they showed you and some especially cute backstage ones of Jonah. You looked over to him across the room, his attention stuck on the funny photo. You admired him for a moment, the way his eyes crinkled up when he laughed and that little clap he does. He was so beautiful. Your thoughts about Jonah were interrupted by his voice, "Y/N? Y/N, you good?" he asked. You snapped out of your trance and nodded with a smile, "Yeah! Just spacing out." Jonah pointed to the stairs over his shoulder, "Wanna go get your stuff settled in?" You nodded and stood up, letting Jonah lead you around the hallway to show you what's changed. "And this is our room." he said, opening the door dramatically. You sniffed and nodded as if you were impressed, "Good, it smells like clean boy in here." you said and Jonah rolled his eyes, showing you the dresser in the room for your stuff. "There's a bathroom right here and you can use that one too, or if not just use the other guys'." he explained and you sat down on the bed. You stretched out your limbs and yawned loudly, looking back at Jonah with a lazy grin. "Sleepy from the flight?" he giggled and you laid back onto the pillows. "I think I'm gonna take a nap." you said quietly, making yourself comfortable under his comforter. Jonah walked around the bed and got in next to you, pulling your body back to his chest. He sighed contently and wrapped one arm around you, "Me too. I woke up at the crack of dawn, eight in the morning, to go get you." You laughed lightly and cuddled into his warm body, letting sleep take over you.

You woke up to loud music and laughter, sitting up and rubbing the sleep from your eyes. You checked your phone and sighed, it was 4PM. You fell asleep around noon. "What a nap." you mumbled under your breath to yourself as you swung your feet off the bed and headed downstairs to find the source of the music. You were met with five pairs of eyes all looking at you: hair disheveled, baggy clothes and a small smile on your lips. "Sleeping beauty is awake!" Daniel exclaimed and you laughed, walking towards them. "What are we doing down here, boys?" you asked, taking a seat on the couch. "Playing Fortnite," Zach said with his eyes glued to the TV screen, "I'm kicking Jack's ass right now." Jack shoved him and Zach let out a chuckle. "There's pizza on the counter if you want some, Y/N." Daniel said and you hopped up from your seat. "Oh thank god, I haven't eaten anything today other than shitty airport food." you said, racing over to the kitchen to grab yourself some. You brought your plate back into the living room. You plopped down on the couch and ate your pizza, feeling eyes burning a hole into the side of your head. You turned and saw Jonah staring, but he looked down once you made eye contact. You could've sworn you saw him blush, but that could also be wishful thinking. You smiled to yourself and finished your food, "I'm gonna head back upstairs and unpack." Jonah stood up, a little too eagerly, and looked to you. "Do you want help?" he asked, shoving his hands into his pockets. You nodded and put your plate in the sink, following Jonah's lead back up to your room.
"So, how was your nap?" Jonah asked while helping you hang up clothes. "Phenomenal. I haven't slept that well in months." you chuckled. Jonah smiled and stayed quiet, silence falling over the two of you. "J?" you asked and he hummed, attention still on the sweater in his hands. "Why did you get so quiet when I asked about Madison?" you questioned. He bit his lip and sighed, putting the sweater in the closet. Jonah walked over to his bed and sat down, resting his elbows on his knees. You sat down next to him criss-crossed, facing him. He let out a deep breath before looking up at you, "We've been fighting a lot. Like, way more than usual. She got mad at me last week because we had a last minute meeting with management and I had to rain-check our plans for that night. I apologized at least twenty times, but she didn't talk to me for 2 days. Then once she finally did speak to me she told me she forgave me, but then she got mad at me again because she felt like I was "putting the band before her" and I just haven't talked to her since then." he explained, his voice cracking with frustration. "What the fuck? That's literally crazy, Jonah. Does she really expect you to set aside your career for her?" you said and he shook his head, running his hand through his hair. "I, I don't know what the hell she wants anymore but it's draining me. On one hand, I know that this is my dream and I cannot give it up for a girl, but on the other hand it makes me feel like a terrible boyfriend." You put your hand on his arm and pulled him to face you. "Hey, listen to me. You're not a terrible boyfriend. She's honestly one of the luckiest girls in the world to have you, because you're incredible. Don't let her make you feel that way. You don't deserve it." you said sternly, but softly. Jonah smiled weakly and pulled you into his chest to hug you. You rested your head against his chest and hugged him back. 'You deserve better, and I could treat you so much better.' you thought to yourself. Once he pulled back, he put his hand on your cheek, "I don't know what I'd do without you, Y/N." You smiled and pretended to think, "Hmm, you probably would've still been the dorky boy in middle school who refused to look a girl in the eye because it scared you." you teased and he playfully rolled his eyes at you. You got serious again and grabbed his hand, "I'm just joking, you know I need you just as much as you need me." Jonah squeezed your hand, "Thank you, I love you." "I love you too, dork."
If only Jonah knew that you meant those three words in a different way than he did. If only he saw that you were the girl for him, not Madison.
