《lightning - jonah marais》chapter five

"Shit." you whispered, eyes immediately shooting open. You reached over Jonah to grab his phone, him still being in a deep sleep. You stared at yourself in the reflection of Jonah's screen, studying her contact picture and debating whether or not to pick up. Yes, Madison knew that you and Jonah were best friends, but she preferred to not have to see how close you were. Jonah was laying half on top of you, she'd be so pissed. Despite your worries, you picked up the call. "Hey, Madison." you said in a weary, yet cheerful voice. "Y/N, hi. Why are you answering Jonah's phone? Where is he?" she quickly asked. "Umm," you stuttered, "he's taking a nap right now. He's really sick so he's exhausted." She nodded her head at your explanation and clicked her tongue. "Oh, I see. He didn't answer any of my texts." she stated bluntly and you sighed nervously, "Like I said, he's been asleep for a while." Madison didn't say anything, she just stared at you through the phone. "I don't like this game you're playing." she finally said. You scoffed and raised a brow, "I'm sorry, what game?" Madi laughed, shaking her head at you. "Joining on them tour for "college credit" and basically securing a place in Jonah's every day life? Please, we all know the reason you're really there, and it's not to take pictures. He should've left you back in Minnesota where you belong." she spat, scowling at you. You were ready to go off on her then and there, but she hung up right after. You set Jonah's phone back down, sighing deeply. Your body must have tensed up a bit, because Jonah shifted in his sleep and looked up at you. His eyes were half open and his hair was a mess, causing you to hold back a laugh. "Everything okay?" he asked raspily and you guided his head back down to its previous spot, stroking his hair. "Yes, everything is fine J. Go back to sleep." you coaxed gently and he fell right back to sleep. You ran a hand through your hair, unable to stop thinking about what Madison said.
Hours passed and you were now in Jack and Corbyn's room. You had taken a long shower after napping with Jonah and left a note next to his sleeping figure in case he woke up while you were gone. You now laid on Corbyn's bed while him and Jack watched TV. You stared up at the ceiling, Madison's cold words replaying in your head over and over. "Gabbie's in the lobby, we're gonna go take Lav sightseeing around the city. I'll catch up with you guys later." Jack said, standing up from his bed. "Have fun!" Corbyn said. "Send Lav pictures please!" you said cheerily and Jack chuckled, "Will do." Once Jack was gone, Corbyn reached down from his sitting position and tapped your nose. You scrunched your nose and looked up at him. "Hi, Corbyn." you said. "You're being quiet." he said, a look of suspicion on his face. You huffed, "We were watching TV." you protested but Corbyn shook his head, turning over onto his stomach next to you. "C'mon, tell me what's wrong." You looked into his pleading eyes and turned your attention back up at the ceiling, knowing he wasn't going to let up until you told him. You let out a deep sigh before explaining. "I got a call from Madison today." "Like, Jonah's Madison?" "Yes. Well, I answered his phone while he was asleep." "Oh, okay. So what happened?" "I told her he was asleep, and she told me that I'm only here with you guys to stay close to Jonah and that he should've left me back in Minnesota." The end of your sentence came out in more of a whisper than you intended, and Corbyn propped himself up on his elbows. "First of all, what the hell is she talking about? You're interning for Zack, which she knows, and we all love having you here. You're the best. She's just jealous. I wouldn't listen to her." Corbyn said, his tone annoyed with his bandmates girlfriend. "She has a point though, Corb." you mumbled. He sat up fully now, looking at you while you avoided his gaze. "What do you mean?" You sat up and turned to face him, gulping in attempts to cure your dry mouth. "No, no, not that. I didn't join the tour just for Jonah. But she's implying that I want Jonah to myself. And in some senses, that's true." you said shyly, playing with your hands. "You're in love with Jonah." Corbyn breathed. You looked up at him with tears brimming your eyes, "I would never do anything to break them up as much as I cannot stand the way she treats him. You believe me, right?" you said, your voice cracking. Corbyn's expression softened and he pulled you into a hug. "Of course I believe you Y/N. You are not that kind of person. Does he know about any of this?" he asked and you buried your head in his shoulder. "No, not about the phone call, not about how I feel. He'd hate me." you mumbled. He pulled back and put his hands on your forearms. "First of all, if he knew about the phone call he'd be angry with her, not you. He loves you. Second, he would not hate you. But that's not my call so I won't tell him about it." You sniffed and gave him a small smile, "You promise?" Corbyn held up his pinky in response. You locked pinkies with him and let out a chuckle. "I love you, Corbyn. Thanks for being here for me." "I love you too, and anytime."

Later that night, you and all of the boys went out for dinner. Jonah, who still wasn't feeling well, stayed back at the hotel and asked you to bring him something back. You had a great time with the boys, laughing and trying to keep them from making too big of a mess at the table. You and Daniel played at least 10 rounds of Tic-Tac-Toe on a napkin before he finally won, and everyone made jokes about how quickly Zach finished his meal. Once you got back to the hotel, you swiped your key to get into Jonah's room to see him sitting up, freshly changed and showered, watching a baseball game on the TV. "Hey, you're back." Jonah smiled and you lifted up the take-out box. "As promised." you said, handing him his food. "Thank god I'm starving, you're the best. How much do I owe you?" You shook your head and sat down on the bed next to him, kicking your shoes off in different directions. "Don't worry about it." Jonah whined and you laughed, stealing the bite off of his plastic fork. "I'll take that as payment." you said with your mouth full. A comfortable silence fell over the two of you and you shifted nervously, working up the courage to tell Jonah about your interaction with Madison earlier. "Have you talked to Madi today?" Jonah swallowed his food before replying, "Yeah, she said you answered the phone while I was asleep. She's out at some club right now." You bit your lip and thoughts raced through your mind. Did she tell him about what she said? "Did she tell you about our conversation?" Jonah looked at you and shook his head, "Why?" You scratched your head anxiously and kept your gaze in your lap. "Y/N, it's me. What's going on?" You took a deep breath and explained your conversation to him. You told him what she said to you, how angry she got when you picked up. You still were too nervous to look him in the eye, but once you did look up he had put his food on the side table and turned to face you completely. You immediately looked back down and Jonah grabbed your hand. "Y/N, look at me." he said gently and you didn't budge. "Please." he asked again and you looked up; even when he was sick and pale, his adorable face still made your heart beat rapidly. "I'm sorry." he said and you raised an eyebrow. "Why are you sorry? You didn't do anything." "Yeah, but neither did you so there's no reason for her to act like that. You were here to take care of me instead of her, and you've been here for me all day. She has no right to say those things about you." Jonah said, his tone becoming angrier and angrier as he went on. You squeezed his hand to try to calm him down but it didn't work. "Why didn't you tell me earlier?" he asked and you shrugged, "I thought you'd be upset with me." Without warning he pulled you into his chest, kissing the top of your head. "No, not at all. Don't ever think that any of this is your fault." You let yourself relax in his arms for a moment, but it didn't last long. Jonah stood up from the bed and frantically searched the floor for his shoes. "What are you—" "I'm going to talk to her." You sat up straighter, "No, Jonah don't. You're sick and you're angry. Just talk to her tomorrow." Jonah put on his shoes and grabbed his jacket. "No, Y/N. I'm sick of it. I'm going to this club and confronting her. I'll be okay. I'll text you when I'm on my way back." he said sternly, pulling your head forward to press his lips to your forehead. In what felt like a split second he was out the door and you were sitting alone in his room.
