Love.
It was a funny thing to Brook, not knowing if she had ever felt it before. She thought Connor had loved her, but he didn't.
He used her for god knew what reason, and then he left her to the side. He was willing to let her die. And he never even gave her an explanation.
And then her dad, well it seemed that he didn't love her either. He always tried to give her off to other packs, and finally he was willing to let her die for Connor.
Fiona might have been the closest thing to love that Brooklynn felt. A strong bond shared between the two that hadn't been betrayed. Fiona had never once left Brook's side, even when it put her at risk.
Fiona was practically a sister for Brook.
And while Brook sat in that hospital room, waiting for news on Kai, she couldn't help but feel like a moron. For the few months that she had been here, she truly believed that Connor loved her. After all, it was so painstakingly easy for him to act that way.
"Moon goddess, why couldn't you give me someone good?" Brook whispered with her head in her hands. Luckily, she was alone in this part of the waiting room. But it didn't really matter since the secret that she could talk with her was out.
Don't give up on him just yet.
"Why shouldn't I?" Brook questioned, "He doesn't love me, he tried to kill me."
He's not himself, Brooklynn. You know that. Stop looking for the easy way out. He needs help.
"Alright, thanks for the helpful advice," Brook grumbled, "It's not like I'm carrying his baby or anything."
Not my fault you didn't use protection.
Brook didn't respond to the goddess, who had tested her nerves too much in one day. She slumped down in her chair, wanting to disappear for a very long time.
"Hey," Someone said. Brook glanced up from her bothered state to see Fiona. Fiona sat down in the chair next to her friend. "You look angry."
"Nah," Brook said, "I'm chilling. There's absolutely nothing that I would be mad about."

Fiona rolled her eyes at Brook's sarcasm, smacking her on the shoulder.
"You're an ass," She smiled, "Speaking of asses, what's happening with Connor?"
Brook's mood noticeably worsened when she heard that question. She really wanted to avoid even thinking about that, but now that it was brought up she couldn't stop.
"I really don't know," She answered, "I know he deserves to die, I mean he betrayed me and the pack. But then again, I am sort of pregnant..."
"So? He already made it abundantly clear that he didn't want anything to do with it."
Brook glared at Fiona, not knowing what to believe. Both Fiona and the moon goddess had a point. Connor did try to kill her, and he said that everything he had ever done was a lie. But then the moon goddess reminded her that Connor could be sick.
Brook looked down at her fingers, and stared at them.
"Brook," Fiona reprimanded, "He wanted to cut it out of you. He wanted to hurt you and that baby. I'm sorry but there's no point in keeping him around."
Right as Brook was beginning to speak, a nurse came into the waiting room with a smile.
Both Brook and Fiona stood up abruptly, waiting for whatever the nurse had to say.
"Well, he's alive. Three hours of fighting that fucker, but he's awake."
Brook didn't even wait for anything else the nurse had to say, she just bolted off in the direction of Kai's room. Fiona followed shortly after her.
They both came to a sliding stop in the room, meeting Kai's brightened smile.
"Well if it isn't my two favorite ladies," Kai grinned, "Alpha, Fiona." He greeted them, smiling even more as Brook frowned at the name.
"Please don't call me that," She said.
"Well then should I call you...Mama?"
Brook stared at Kai, looking at him as if he'd just shit all over the floor.
"Nevermind, Brook it is." Kai said while laughing, and Brook couldn't hide her laugh either.
Something about Kai just made you want to be happy, even if you almost just died. To Brook, he was like the last drop of sunlight in darkness.

"Anyways..." Kai said, "I was thinking about baby names-" Kai didn't even finish his sentence before Brook raised a palm.
"I am not ready to discuss any sort of baby names."
"But I was really thinking like Kai jr,"
"Kai, no." Brook said, desperately trying to hide her smile.
Kai shifted his gaze away from Brook and over to Fiona.
"Well someone's looking like an extra side of fries." Kai said, attempting to make a compliment towards Fiona.
Fiona however, did not understand at all what he had meant by that.
"A side of what now?" She questioned, sending a quizzical glance to Kai.
"Some fries...You know, fries make me happy and—fuck it. I was trying to say you looked good," Kai mumbled. Fiona glanced at Brook, who glanced back with crushing smiles.
"You are literally so adorable, you're like a golden retriever." Fiona giggled, pinching Kai's cheeks. He swatted her hands away, sticking his tongue out at Fiona.
"Wow, thanks for the compliment." Kai replied sarcastically. Kai grew bored of the subject, and asked Brooklynn something he'd been dying to ask. "Are you taking over as alpha?"
Brook stared at him for a moment, chewing on her lip. She really didn't know if she would or not. Would they even accept her?
"I really don't think I can-"
"I literally can't see anyone else being our alpha," Kai said, "If you don't take the spot I might just actually die, like for real this time."
"Well I don't want that happening," Brook laughed, "And plus, Connor might be back to normal soon."
Both Fiona and Kai let out matching groans as they looked between each other.
"Brook," Kai paused, "He wanted you dead."
"But that's the thing," Brook retorted, "He was cursed—He still is."
Fiona sent a bewildered look towards Brooklynn, who raised her brows.
"Where did this come from all the sudden? I mean a little while ago you were ready to get rid of him. He was ready to get rid of you!" Fiona shouted, her face looking confused.
Brook contemplated on whether or not she should tell them about what the moon goddess said. She knew that they both knew that she was able to talk to her, but she still felt weird voicing it. She looked at them, realizing that they were her best friends. They needed to know.
"The moon goddess told me not to cut him out," She looked down, "She told me that he needs help."
The three of them looked between each other, all with looks of surprise. They knew that no matter what was happening, they couldn't ignore the moon goddess.
"Alright then. How do we even help someone who's been moonwashed?" Kai asked, looking to Fiona. Fiona looked down as if she knew something that they didn't, and Brook noticed as well.
"Fiona..."
"Okay!" Fiona exclaimed, "But you aren't going to like it."
A few minutes later, Brook and Kai sat on his bed, staring at Fiona, dumbfounded.
"I have to do what to Connor?" She asked, terrified and guilty of what Fiona said to do.
"Yes," She said, "You have to feed him elderberry root."
"But that's poison," Kai jumped in.
Brook looked at Fiona with wide eyes, but Fiona shrugged sympathetically.
"It's only poisonous in large amounts, but you'll only be giving him half of a root."
Brooklynn was shocked at the cure for being moonwashed, but she was even more shocked that it had to be the mate who gave it.
Brook had never tried elderberry before, however, she had a friend that did. That friend ended up having a seizure, before she eventually died.
So Brooklynn wondered if it would kill him.
"There's no other way?" Brook asked, and Fiona shook her head.
"If you want your shit mate back, this is the way."
Brook was once again contemplating her next move, but as much as this decision sucked, it was almost too easy for her.
"Alright," She swallowed, "Get me some elderberry."
