《Cupid Falling》BONUS Chapter: Halloween
Advertisement
Author's Note: I wasn't quite ready to stop writing about these two yet, so here's a little bonus chapter. This scene takes place between the last chapter and the epilogue.
I lock the door to my apartment and put the key in my pocket before walking across the hall to knock on Eros's door. The muffled sound of music and people talking echoes in the hallway. Eros has been really excited about the idea of hosting his first Halloween party, and by the sounds of it, it's going well. I'm a little late, as I had a late shift at the Vet clinic, but I'm finally ready.
It takes another moment before the door opens and I nearly choke on nothing as I catch sight of Eros. We've been dating for around four months now since he became mortal, and the time has done nothing to dull my attraction to him. He definitely kept every ounce of that otherworldly handsomeness. His choice of costume is doing nothing to lower my heart rate either.
I honestly don't know whether to laugh or jump his bones. Maybe both.
"A Cupid?" I grin. "You decided to go as a Cupid?"
He grins back and spins around to give me a good look. I still can't believe he did this. He's literally only wearing a cloth around his waist, like a loincloth or oversized diaper, and nothing else. Unless you count the little white wings and golden bow. I don't. I guess if you got it, flaunt it. And he's definitely got it. My fingers itch to run my hands over those amazing abs.
"You humans have very interesting ideas about what Cupids look like," he muses.
"Us humans now," I correct him teasingly.
"Us humans." He smiles and leans down to give me a warm kiss that instantly sets off a burst of flutters in my abdomen. I'm already ready for the guests to leave so we can have some time alone. He looks me up and down. "Are you coming as Steve?"
I grin. "Yes."
The large onesie I'm wearing has a cat tail, and the hood has a cat face and ears. I knew I had to have it the moment I laid eyes on it. The cat's facial expression is the same grumpy, disapproving one that usually adorns Steve's.
"Definitely scary enough," he mutters, but amusement softens the disgruntled look on his face.
He ushers me inside, and I'm impressed by the look of his apartment. There are cobwebs with plastic spiders covering large portions of his walls, lit jack-o'-lanterns on every surface, and more random Halloween decorations than what's left in most stores by now.
Coming up behind me, he wraps his naked arms around me and leans his chin on my shoulder. "Too much?"
"No, just enough." My stomach growls, and I turn my head to give him a sheepish smile. "Sorry, I didn't have time to eat. I got changed as soon as I got home from work. Do you have any food?"
"On the kitchen counter." He herds me towards the kitchen, weaving us between the guests. There are more than I had realized. His hands on my hips are warm through the fabric of the onesie, and I'm glad I put nothing on underneath other than underwear. I'd be roasting.
In the kitchen, I find sliced pizzas and various finger foods with Halloween themes, as well as crisps and sweets. I pick up a sausage that's been cut to resemble a finger.
"Charming." I raise an eyebrow at him. "I will need a guarantee that this isn't actually a human finger. It is Tuesday after all."

He laughs, the sound warming my insides even further. "I can promise it's not. Halloween is my day off from being a serial killer."
I slide back into his arms, food temporarily forgotten. "Everyone at this party thanks you."
He nuzzles into my neck, pushing the hoodie back for access, his breath hot against my skin. "I never realized cats could be so sexy," he mumbles, the movement of his lips creating delicious friction that sends a shiver of anticipation down my spine.
"Have you not seen the sexy cat costumes?" I tilt my head slightly to the side to give him better access as he places soft kisses on my neck.
"Sexier than this one?" He nips me gently, making me grip his shoulders a little harder.
"This isn't the most common cat costume," I admit, even as I'm struggling to remember what we're talking about. His presence is always intoxicating, and tonight is no different. I slide my hands down along his bare torso, reveling in the feel of his warm skin against my palms.
Someone clears their throat and in a daze, I take a step back, embarrassed to have forgotten myself so completely. We're at a party with at least two dozen other people. Not the time to be feeling up your boyfriend.
"I hope I'm not interrupting," my best friend Amy says, though the smirk on her face suggests she clearly knows she is. "I just wanted to come over and say hi. It feels like I haven't seen you in forever!"
She leans in and gives me a hug. As she pulls back, I laugh at her costume. She's dressed as a basketball player, but she's cut the middle of her top out to allow space for her big baby bump, which has been painted to look like a basketball.
"Love your costume!"
"Thanks!" She beams at me as her hand instinctively wraps around the bottom of the bump—or ball. "It was this or having an alien burst out of me, and the latter felt like it hit a little too close to home."
Her husband, Luke, comes over and gives her a kiss on the cheek. "Nothing will burst through, I promise."
She scoffs. "That's easy for you to say."
I take the opportunity to scoff down a couple of sausage fingers as they continue talking to Eros. After having to give a gastric lavage to a dog—after the owner had foolishly used shoe polish to turn the dog brown for Halloween, which it then licked off—I had lost all appetite during the day and never ate lunch. By now I'm starving.
The others are still talking, now discussing getting together for a movie night before the baby is due in a few weeks, so I eat a slice of pizza. And maybe a cookie in the shape of a pumpkin. I catch sight of Trevor on the other side of the room, standing close to his fiancée, Sophia. They're adorably dressed as Danny and Sandy from Grease. He waves as he sees me, and I wave back. After he stopped hoping for a relationship with me, we've become good friends and Eros and I have even gone on some double dates with him and Sophia. They also regularly join game nights at Amy and Luke's house. My friend finally has the couples' nights she's always dreamed of.
Stuffing my face with a couple of candy corns—which I instantly regret, as they are still the distant disgusting cousin of real candy—I turn back to Eros only to catch him frowning at something on the other side of the room.

"What's wrong?" I ask as I try to see what it is he's looking at.
He lightly touches my arm. "One moment, please," he says as he walks away.
I follow him with my eyes as he weaves between the party guests until he comes to a stop in front of someone. Unable to see them from this angle, I move over a little, and my jaw hits the floor as I catch sight of the woman he's talking to. She's stunningly beautiful. She must be another Cupid, because that is not an earthly level of gorgeous. Dark silky hair flows down her back, and she could honestly be a supermodel with the way the skimpy red dress is hugging her curves. The dress and purple gloves indicate she's come as Jessica Rabbit, even if she's not bothered with the red hair.
Inexplicably drawn towards her, I move across the room until I come up to stand next to Eros. He's shaking his head as if he can't quite believe what's going on.
"I still don't understand what you're doing here," he says. "Are you checking up on me?"
"No," the woman says, lifting a bare shoulder in a shrug. "I was bored. Someone mentioned you were having a party, so I thought I'd make an appearance."
By now other guests were casting surreptitious glances, possibly as drawn to her as I was. It was a strange feeling. I'd not felt this way for Andris when he was here, despite Eros telling me Cupids are usually irresistible to humans. But this woman, whoever she is, I can't stop staring at her. Not in a romantic way, but like I can't wait to see what she has in store for me.
"A friend of yours?" I ask Eros.
He gives me a frustrated look before nodding towards the woman. "Penelope... Meet Fate."
I open my mouth to say hello only to close it again. "Wait. Fate? As in... Literally Fate?"
"The one and only," the woman says with a smile as she reaches her hand out.
Taking it, I shake her hand while my thoughts are still flying wild. After ending up dating a Cupid, I thought nothing could surprise me anymore. I was wrong.
"N... Nice to meet you," I stammer. "What brings you here?"
"As I was telling Eros, I was growing bored. It's been happening more and more recently. As humans evolve, they seem to require less and less of me."
I frown. "Are you saying we choose our own fate?"
She laughs. It's a melodic sound that stirs something deep inside me. I could listen to it forever. "You humans have always chosen your own fate. That's what free will is all about. However—" She smiles. "We can nudge you along the way if there are specific things in store for you. Whether you end up taking the paths we present you though, is entirely up to you."
"Is Andris coming?" I ask. Eros's best friend still visits us from time to time, even if Cupids aren't really meant to visit the mortal world more than necessary.
"He said he'd try," Eros says and looks at Fate. "Have you heard anything?"
She shakes her head, her dark hair dancing around her shoulders. "I haven't seen or spoken to him for quite some time."
"Well..." Eros makes a sweeping movement around the room. "Enjoy yourself. Try not to mess up any mortals."
"I will do my best." Fate winks before walking over to a table with some drinks. I can see several of the single men in attendance, and a couple of the women, following her every move.
"I can't believe Fate's here." Eros shakes his head. "She's never been one to spend much time in the mortal realm."
"If she came down when you were first here, maybe she discovered she liked it?" I suggest, remembering him telling me about the time she joined him and Andris in a bar.
"Maybe," he says, sounding less than convinced. Then he looks down at me and smiles. "Anyway, I have better things to do than worry about what Fate is up to."
"Oh?" I raise my eyebrows. "And what would that be?"
He places a hand on my lower back and moves me along, opening the door to his bedroom and taking us inside before closing it behind us. I laugh as I catch sight of Leonard and Brian in their pen. Leonard is wearing a pumpkin outfit and Brian a superhero cape. There's a plate of vegetables in various shapes that they're busy devouring.
"They're having their own private party," Eros says as he sees what I'm looking at.
"Maybe we should leave." I giggle. "I don't want to intrude."
"They can deal. I missed you today." He swings me around and kisses me deeply. His hands slide down along my back to cup my bottom, pulling me closer to show me exactly how much he's missed me.
"I guess this unsexy cat outfit worked after all," I mumble as he kisses a trail along my jaw and down my neck.
He pulls back and looks down at me with darkly glittering eyes. "Honey, you could come dressed in a trash bag and I'd still bend you over and do you."
I laugh. "So romantic."
"I wasn't going for romantic." He lifts me up and wraps my legs around his waist. As his hardness rubs against me, I can't help but moan. Pushing against me again, he captures my next moan with a deep kiss. My body is aflame, and no matter how little I put on underneath the onesie, it would not help. I'm burning up.
"We should rejoin the party," I whisper even as I move against him. "They'll wonder where the host has gone."
"They can wonder."
I bat at the feathery wings on his back and can't help but grin. He looks ridiculous. And sexy. Sexiculous? "Did you have wings as a Cupid?"
"No." He's not interested in talking, throwing me down on the bed and following closely behind as I move up to lean against the pillows.
"What about bows?" I nod towards the golden prop lying discarded on the floor.
"No. We used to a long time ago, but we stopped. Something to do with that free will." He's reached me and starts unzipping my onesie. A pleased grin spreads across his face as he sees the red lace underneath.
He leans in to kiss me again, but I place a hand against his chest. "Eros," I say, trying to sound stern. "You're hosting a party. We can't do this right now."
With a huff, he sits back. Seeing the muscles moving underneath his skin, my resolve wavers, but I force myself to get off the bed and zip the onesie back up. Moving towards the door, I look back at him over my shoulder.
"I promise I will let you see exactly what I have on underneath once everyone leaves."
He jumps off the bed. "I'll send them home right now."
I laugh. "No. Don't do that."
Coming up to me, he places a hand on my cheek and looks down at me, a soft smile playing on his lips. "Penelope?"
"Yes?" I say, my voice breathless.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
He kisses me again. When he leans back, he's holding up a key. I stare at it, frowning. I already have a key to his apartment, and he has one to mine.
Looking oddly nervous, he runs his hand through his hair. "So... I'm tired of going between our two apartments. I thought maybe it's time for us to move in together."
Butterflies burst through my abdomen as he gives me a crooked smile. "I made an offer on a house. This is the key to it. It's not final yet, so if you don't like it, we will find another. But we can go look tomorrow. If you'd like to?"
Throwing my arms around him, I squeal. "Yes! Of course, I'll move in with you, you dummy!"
"Great!" He kisses me again, and for a moment, I forget the guests on the other side of the door as he pushes me up against it. Until someone knocks.
"Eros? Penelope?" Of course, it's Amy. It's always Amy.
"Coming," I call, giving Eros an apologetic smile.
"You certainly will tonight," he promises with a dark look, and I can't believe how lucky I am to have this wonderfully sexy man in my life. Free will or not, fate definitely worked in my favor on this.

The last year is upon us. The world is ending, but you already knew that; everyone does. Spring has come, and the flowers have bloomed here in this small town with no name. Thousands of different colours now paint the field that had been coloured by frost alone just yesterday. The townsfolk have gathered by the field to celebrate the beginning of the last spring with so many smiling faces. Tears too. I can’t help but wonder whether the flowers will bloom again before the sky falls upon us. Others must be thinking the same. There are moments when the smiles fade and their eyes glaze over as they realize just how near to the end we are. They forget it again in moments. They make themselves forget. The children aren’t like that, though. They don’t seem to understand, or they’ve come to accept it in a way that their parents just can’t manage to. This one boy actually asked me why I was sad. The beginning of next spring; the day that the world ends. It seems so far away, yet so close. Wherever you are now, I have to ask, how are you spending your last spring?
