Chapter 29
And so it was over. We’d won the war, we’d claimed victory and our pack was safe once more. The feeling was almost orgasmic in a sense. It had been three days since our victory and all the bodies had already been gathered up and buried. We’d had a memorial service yesterday in the courtyard for all the lives lost and tonight was the official victory celebration.
I was sitting on a stool beside Carson, our backs to the brick wall of someone’s house as we watched the craziness take place around us. There was singing and dancing as the music blasted from Thomas’ loud speakers.
People were drinking and giving toasts while others sat looking on somber and withdrawn; I shouldn’t forget that others had lost their relatives and friends in the battle and so there would certainly be no need for them to celebrate.
I looked around the courtyard, my eyes finding Lucas in the crowd. He was dancing with Alpha of the Marcana pack. I watched as he bent to whisper something in her ear and she laughed a soft yet rich sound that made me smile. If it wasn’t for their help we would most likely still be fighting for our lives.
If not for them we would have lost a lot more than we had and Victor would possible have gotten away, turns out his body had been found in the woods, broken and battered; his throat had been ripped open. Carson told me he had been mauled by a bear-one of Lucas’ friends and despite the relief I felt at his death I had to wonder about his daughter.
What did she think of all this? Was she mourning her father’s death? Or celebrating the fact that this evil man was no longer breathing? Was she sitting around plotting revenge on our pack or had Neil found her and run off to someplace magical to live their fairytale lives?
It was a question I couldn’t answer but I hoped this would finally be the end. It was time for Carson and I to get our own fairy tale; I held the firm belief that we deserved to live happy lives, we’d been through too much not to be expended such a courtesy.

~Michael’s POV~
“I was wrong.” I admitted to my wife and life mate.
“About what dear?” she asked, gazing at me with beautiful eyes which held no secrets.
“Laken, he deserves to find love, it doesn’t matter who his mate is.” I told her, my eyes never leaving hers. She didn’t say anything, instead a soft smile graced her lips and tears I knew she wouldn’t shed tonight filled her eyes as she stared back into mine and I knew that what I said pleased her.
My gaze travelled back to my son, who sat across the courtyard with the Alpha. He had his head tilted as he spoke to our leader with a wide smile on his face, his eyes seemed to twinkle as he spoke and I watched as his hand drifted and he took the Alpha’s hand in his.
I don’t remember a time I had ever seen him so happy, so unbelievably satisfied and I knew I would never forgive myself for trying to break them apart in the first place. My son was happy; he was in love, just as I was in love with his mother.

It was a beautiful and sacred feeling to be with someone you cared about to such an extent. To feel as though you would give them the world if you could, to feel as though a five minute separation felt like five hours. Laken had that now and I didn’t need to worry whether or not his feelings would be reciprocated because any old fool could see the love in the Alpha’s eyes as he gazed into my son’s eyes.
He wore a soft smile on his face and nodded periodically at whatever Laken was telling him. He looked at my son as if there was no one else there, as if whatever he was saying was the most important thing he would ever hear.
I also noticed the little changes in him. He had a gentleness about him that never appeared around anyone else, not even when he dealt with the pack kids.
They altered each other in all the right ways, it didn’t matter to me anymore that they were both men, that they may never produce an heir, I suppose the war had changed me some, not knowing whether I would live to see my small family again had changed my perspective on a lot of things and as I looked across the courtyard at the man gazing into my son’s eyes with his heart on his sleeve I thought ‘This is a man who has found love’ and I have to smile because I know exactly how he feels.
I look on for a moment longer, watching my son and his mate. I smile when The Alpha reaches up and ruffles his hair and my heart swells when I hear Laken’s laughter. Then I turn away allowing them their moment of privacy. I look instead at my wife who was also looking at our son and I take her hand in mine.
“Let’s go for a walk.” I say to her and she follows.
……………………………………….
~Laken’s POV~
“I can’t believe it only lasted a few hours, it felt like days!” I said to him before flopping down on his unspread bed. This room was the only one that had remained untouched during the battle and so I felt comfortable and completely safe in this room that we had shared more times than I could count.
“Yeah and look at the damage done in such a short time.” He replied, carefully lowering himself onto the bed. I could tell he was still feeling quite a bit of discomfort from his injuries but I was glad it wasn’t anything serious.
Turns out the gunshot he’d received had merely nicked the flesh of his thigh and so he hadn’t needed any form of surgery, however he now had a bandaged chest, leg and arm and when he walked it was like a very old person; slow and unsteady. I’d joked about it quite a bit already and he had taken it in stride.
“I know this is probably selfish but I’m just really glad I didn’t lose you, I’d have been willing for anyone else to die but you.” I admitted to him in the silence of the room and I watched his expression carefully when I said the words. He didn’t give anything away though, but his eyes found mine and he patted the area beside him “come here.”
I crawled over to where he sat and lay with my head in his lap looking up at his face as he looked down at mine but he still said nothing. He just ran his hand through my hair over and over again as if memorizing the feel of my curls against his skin. I didn’t say anything either, I was satisfied just watching him as he watched me and basking in the attention he was giving me.

Every now and then despite the pain, he would bend and kiss my forehead or my fingers or my eyes and face and lips and so I didn’t fall asleep with the images of the battle and death in my mind but with the feel of his soft firm lips against mine and the color of his beautiful eyes.
…………………………………
The tears gathered in my eyes as I stared at him. He had his bag slung across his shoulder and a smile on his face. It had been three weeks since the pack raid and he’d already sent in his letter of resignation to the school. Yesterday had been his last class and today he would be flying back to London.
I had no idea when I would see him again and even though I had his number it just wouldn’t be the same. I was going to miss him and I told him that as I hugged him tight against me in the busy airport.
“I’m going to miss you too Laken, but it’s not like we’re never going to see each other again. I’ll come back to visit and maybe you can come to London sometime, I’ll be happy to show you the sights.” He said with a grin and I nodded.
I couldn’t believe how close we’d gotten. I would never have imagined us being friends after our first meeting but here we were hugging goodbye with tears our eyes.
He let me go and looked beside me at Carson, who stood with a smile on his face. They shook hands and I listened as Carson thanked him sincerely for all his help. They had also become friends, after all their past hatred and somehow that made it harder for me to watch him go.
I had enjoyed our little group of friends. It had been fun hanging with Lucas, Carson and Thomas every day after school and I would cherish the memories forever. I had no idea why I was getting so absolutely emotional about all this when it’s like he said; we’d see each other again.
We all looked up when we heard his flight number being called and I grabbed him into another tight hug before he turned and walked away, but not before I saw the tears glistening in his eyes and that’s when I really felt the loss.
……………………………….
“Haha, I’m not even gonna comment on that!” I laughed then batted his hand away as it came to ruffle my hair.
It was a Saturday night and we were at his place, sitting on the ground in his living room, with the TV on and the game controllers discarded at our feet. We’d lost interest in the game long ago after we’d taken out the alcohol and proceeded to drink through more than half the bottle. I was already more than half way drunk and Carson wasn’t far behind.
“What? I think you’d look good as a model, models are hot and so are you.” He said with a slight slur in his words.
“Ha! Now I know you’re drunk!” I laughed again, managing to spill at least half the contents of my glass onto his carpet.
“Am not!” he said, putting down his empty glass and adjusting on the floor so that his head came to rest in my lap.
“Kissme.” He said, his words running together to further illustrate my point. I put down my own glass beside his and ran my finger across his moist lips. When he caught it between his teeth I let out a squeal and drew my hand away with a laugh.
He was laying there looking at my face, his eyes half closed and hazy with alcohol and lust. I licked my lips and his eyes followed the movement but he made no move towards me. He only stared.
“Kiss me.” I repeated his words with a smile and watched as he grinned up at me, then he got up from my lap and he drew himself up to my level, his face moving closer to mine. He touched his lips to mine gently and I closed my eyes, loving the feel of them until he pulled away ever so slightly and I felt them at my ear.
“You know, I’m the Alpha, what I say goes.” He whispered against my ear then planted a soft kiss on my lobe.
“Not for me.” I whispered back and I felt rather than saw him smile.
I twisted around so that we were face to face again and brought my face to his, wanting to feel his lips against mine once more, but we both moved in too fast and our noses bumped together.
“Ow!” I exclaimed rubbing my injured nose before shoving Carson’s shoulder as he started laughing. He only laughed harder and I shook my head.
“You’re drunk.” I told him, still rubbing the area, but I couldn’t help but to grin at his playfulness.
“I love you.” He said between chuckles ad I batted his hand away as he moved it towards my cheek.
I smiled and said it again with a shake of my head, “You’re drunk.”
“I loved you way before I was drunk.” He said then moved in and planted a wet messy kiss on my lips.
“Yeah me too.” I replied with a chuckle and then the real fun began.
