《The Hero Without a Past》Chapter One Hundred and Twenty: Close Combat Specialists

I relayed Nanocloud’s instructions to Doyle, who frowned. “We’re not the right type of unit to break that stalemate. You need door-to-door fighting specialists.”
“Maybe we’re all that’s available.”
“We’ll find out. Let’s move.”
Fifteen minutes later, we reached the turnoff. Under a large sign reading BOTANICAL GARDENS - KEW, a unit of soldiers waited by three trucks.
What struck me was how short the soldiers were. Lean, thin men in the green-and-grey uniforms and carrying huge knives…
To my surprise, Banner let out a whoop. “Now we’re talking!”
The leader of the men walked up to Doyle and saluted. “Captain Ranjit Singh, 4th Gurkha Rifles. My boys are here for whatever you need.”
Doyle returned the salute with parade-ground perfection. “Major-General Doyle. Acting. I’ve heard a great deal about your unit. I understand you have some supplies for us, too?”
“Fifty Hellfire-X missiles for one Mr. Belessar.” Captain Singh ran his gaze across the lot of us. “I’m assuming the gentleman in the massive metal exoskeleton is Mr. Belessar?”
“Ji (Yes), Captain,” I replied.
Doyle quirked an eyebrow at me.
Crap, I hadn’t planned on replying in Hindi. … why did I do that again?
The Captain broke out into a smile. “Ah, you speak our language. Excellent. The boys haven’t had a chance to fight side-by-side with an armored suit before, think you can give them some pointers?”
“Don’t get in front of a suit, and don’t get in the way of the rifle.” I brandished the Mass Driver Rifle for emphasis. “When the enemy starts shooting, take cover and let me draw the fire. Also, are your men any good at door-to-door combat? I think we’ve got to break into some buildings and remove some Raptor Guards there.”

“We can do it, Mr. Belessar. How many of these Raptors are we talking?”
“At least four hundred.”
“Splendid, it will make for a good warmup,” Singh grinned. “We’re ready to follow you, General sir.”
: By the way, Banner is signalling STOP TALKING to you in hand signals behind your back, so…
… was I stepping on some arcane military ritual without being aware of it? Never mind.
As we marched forward, Banner walked up to me. “Didn’t know you spoke Hindi.”
“It’s not important. Say, what do you think of the captain? He seems awfully confident to me, considering he’s got less than a hundred men….”
“A hundred Gurkhas, Belessar.”
“... Gurkhas?”
“They’re very, very good light infantry. Probably among the top three, four close combat specialist units in the world. At Delhi, they fought off nearly two-thirds their number of Sarnak and Raptors in a densely packed urban battle that lasted several hours.” Banner fixed me a stare. “And you asked them if they were any good at door-to-door.”
I shrugged. “That sounds a bit overhyped.”
Banner rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry, you’ll see.”

Life of a Core
After a disembodied voice had told him he was what amounted to an exceptionally talented rock, it had been hard to not let it go to his non-existent head. Until, random chance had decided to give him a square kick in the minerals. Which had in turn forced him to fend for himself in an unknown land, all while he attempted to make sense of his place in the world. Truthfully though, all he had really wanted to do from the start had been to bury himself a hundred feet below the ground and be left to his own devices. Yet, for one reason or another, nobody ever seemed willing to leave the dungeon-building core alone long enough to actually make one. Each chapter will average around two to three thousand words, the release schedule is still a WIP but you should expect the first six chapters to be released over the next six days. This is planned out as a dungeon building fiction, but don't expect it right off the bat! The story is a depiction of the everyday adventures (alongside an overarching plot) of what I imagine a dungeon core would experience when thrust into a random environment where everything and everyone tried to covet or eat him. I also really enjoy reading the comments and reviews people leave and would love to get some reader involvement with the story itself, likely through polls at the end of each chapter. I hope you enjoy my story! (If you feel like some of the characters seem familiar, you may have read some older work I wrote a while back under a different account. If you happen to be one of my old readers and recognize the similarities, I'm happy to have you back!)

In Pursuit of Bark's Finest
On the frontiers of transhumanity’s expansion into the galaxy thousands of light years from the light of Sol, things can get rather chaotic. There are countless millions of nascent interstellar nations securing their interests, pirate ships prospering off plunder and deniable mercenary work, dissidents setting up their own civilizations, and other groups all trying to push an agenda. When these groups crash into each other, the results can become extremely messy and convoluted. Recently, a frontier nation calling itself the Red Star Union has found itself at the focal point of one such complication. A freighter under their protection has been sabotaged, hijacked in interstellar space, and robbed of its cargo. This would be bad enough even if all it were carrying was luxury goods, but the freighter Nebula Plow was carrying more than just normal trade goods. Indeed, her cargo of Non-Orientable Wormholes for use in starship power plants was both very expensive and very, very dangerous. Now the Red Star Union has to worry about a pirate crew running around with several extra devices capable of converting matter into antimatter with negligible energy cost. With those, the pirates could be capable of inflicting untold damage if allowed to leverage their ill-gotten gains into a stronger position, a possibility the Union finds completely intolerable. Unfortunately, all that the Red Star Union has to go on for evidence is two names; that of the captain, and that of the ship. The Captain is going by the possible pseudonym of Fuller, while the ship is named Bark’s Finest. And thus the orders came down to the Union’s Bureau of Starforce Intelligence: find more information on these pirates, conclusively identify them, and figure out where exactly they’ve gone to ground so that the fleet can crush them before they get established. Of the many agents that the bureau assigned to this mission, one would happen to play an important role: Field Agent Madeline Zargosty. This is her story. This story is entirely pre-written, and will have one chapter released per week. If you want to read it all ahead of schedule and get access to some premium-exclusive bonus content, the entire book is available for purchase; links to the appropriate storefront pages will be posted at the end of each chapter. This story is also being posted to Scribblehub.
