《Vegas Sushi》5. We're not in Kansas anymore
Advertisement
Sunny Bunny always wore her rose-colored sunglasses. She had left Kansas with them on and had refused to take them off. The world was never the same without them. Her glasses had the power to turn dark clouds into puffy marshmallows, and dangerous wolves into cute puppy dogs.
Sunny was oblivious to the ugliness in the world; by design. "Ignorance is bliss," was her motto, and she did her best to live up to it. She'd been pretty successful but now the ugliness was in plain sight, looking all shifty eyed, and it refused to go away much like a bad fart.
As she sat on the bathroom floor with little Toto asleep in her arms, Sunny wondered how her LIFE had gotten so wrong. Poof. As if with a wave of a magic wand, her life had gone from wonderful to disaster.
The last few months had been her happiest, resembling a Disney fair tale. She'd found her prince; with a magical kiss, Rico had transformed her. She'd gone from ugly-duckling to a beautiful swan and somehow had even become a star.
Sunny got up and saw her reflection in the bathroom mirror.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest one of all? Well, it's not me. She didn't recognize herself. Her green eye shadow had smeared and she looked like the Wicked Witch of the West.
There were several stickers on the mirror. Gamblers Anonymous. Drug and Suicide Hot-line, and a happy face sticker: Be Happy Eat Vegas Sushi. Sushi was the last thing she wanted.
She put sleeping Toto in the sink. Then began wiping the mess off her face. Like painting, stroke by stroke, the real Sunny emerged.
She looked at the big-red bruise on her chest. She realized it was right over her heart. Sunny knew Rico had only hit her because he thought she was going to stab him with the file. She would have done the same.
Sunny desperately needed to talk to someone and there was only one person who could help her now, her friend Gale. She'd known her since they were kid sin Kansas. Gale always knew what to do. She would know how to fix the mess.
When Gale picked up the phone, she heard Sunny sobbing.
"Sunny Bun, is that you?" said Gale.
"Yeah," said Sunny.
"Honey, are you okay? You sound awful. You sick or something thing?" said Gale.
"Everything's bad, Gale," said Sunny. "My life is a disaster."
"Oh love, I don't want to hear it. Not from you, Sunny Bun. You were supposed to have a happy life. What's going on, Shug?" said Gale.
"Rico, hit me," said Sunny.
"Oh gosh, are you all right?" said Gale.
"I'm okay. It was kind of an accident. A misunderstanding," said Sunny.
Sunny proceeded to tell Gale the whole story. She started with her going shopping at all the incredible Las Vegas stores, then coming home and trying on all her clothes. Then she told her about looking for Toto and getting accidentally hit by Rico. And finally, she told Gale about pulling little Toto out of the toilet. By the time Sunny had finished the story, Gale started to cry.

"God almighty, Sunny Bunny. Your life sounds like a movie of the week. What in the world did you get yourself into? It's as if a twister decided to run its course right through your life," said Gale.
"I know it. I mean, I don't know what happened, Gale. One minute everything was perfect, and now it's all a big mess. How do I change it back?" said Sunny.
"Sometimes there's no going back, Sunny Bun. Sometimes when things break, they can't be fixed," said Gale.
Sunny began to sob. It was not what she had wanted to hear. She had hoped that Gale would have the right answers, the cure-all to make things perfect again. After all, Sunny was used to following her heart, but Gale was wise. Sunny always took her advice and opinion seriously.
"Time heals all wounds, Sunny Bun. But who knows how things will be after this? You just have to face reality, Shug," said Gale with a quivering voice of concern. "Oh Sunny Bun, I'm so worried about you. You're soft, kind, and sweet, and people like you just wind up getting taken advantage of. The world is a dangerous place, and you're in Las Vegas, of all places. They don't call it Sin City for nothing. I hate to say it, but maybe you should go back to Kansas. "
"There are no fairy tales in Kansas," said Sunny. "Remember those old movies we used to watch as kids? The ones with Marilyn Monroe."
"I remember. Those movies were my favorite. Marilyn always found her true love and lived happily ever after," said Gale.
"Well, my life was kind of like that. I thought it would last forever," said Sunny.
"It never does, Sunny Bun," said Gale.
"And the worst thing is Rico lied. How can I believe anything he tells me?" said Sunny.
"He's a charmer, Sunny Bun. Charmers are lethal. They charm their way into your heart, into your pants, and then they'll take all you got," said Gale.
"Oh, but I love him, Gale." said Sunny. "Rico's my Shug. I want to be with him. He just needs to get his act together."
"Sunny Bun, you're a pretty girl, but you're a little dense sometimes. It's a sad fact, but people don't change. They just get worse. Trust me, things can only go downhill from here," said Gale.
"But... I love him," said Sunny.
"Sunny, he flushed your dog," said Gale.
"Yeah, I know," said Sunny. "I guess I just don't want the fairy tale to end."
"As I see it, Shug, you have three choices," said Gale. "You can go back to Kansas. You can stay where you are and live with it."
"What's my third option?" said Sunny.

"The third option is ... you go find a new fairy tale, "said Gale.
"What kind of fairy tale?" said Sunny.
"Sunny Bunny, the world's on fire. Everywhere you go nowadays, people are miserable and unhappy. I've never seen it like this. It's as if a dark ugly cloud has come over the world and now all there is darkness in people's hearts. People are angry, nasty, hopeless. But when people see everyone gets happy. You give people hope. I see them at the diner. People can't stop talking about you. They all wonder: Who is Sunny Bunny? You brighten everyone's day. God gave us all a gift. Maybe your gift is to make the world a better place," said Gale."
"Like world peace?" said Sunny.
"Maybe even more," said Gale. "Maybe you're here to save the world. Maybe you're here to squash all the ugliness; and God knows the world is full of ugliness right now. You need to shine, Sunny, be a star. Bring light and hope to the world. Maybe it's your destiny," said Gale.
"My destiny is to save the world?" Sunny chuckled. "Oh gosh, Gale, you're funny. Here I thought I was the one with her head in the clouds."
"I'm being serious, Sunny." said Gale.
"Are you saying I should be in the movies...like Marilyn Monroe?" said Sunny.
"In the movies, on TV, in the spotlight somewhere. Be a star to give people hope." said Gale.
"Oh, Gale, I don't know about this.
"I just wanted something simple: fall in love and have it last forever. Besides, I'm just little Sunny from Kansas. I can't do this all alone. Rico always takes care of everything for me. All I have to do is shop. Maybe you're right, Gale. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and live with it. Perhaps I should just forgive and forget," said Sunny.
"Sunny, I've known you since you were ten years old, and you've always been a backseat driver. You gotta learn to take care of yourself. I know you hate taking charge, but you need to start taking charge cause that's the only way you gonna catch your dreams," said Gale.
"My dreams," said Sunny.
"Never give up on your dreams, Shug," said Gale. "The world needs a star to bring it hope and happiness. The world needs a Sunny Bunny."
"Maybe I should just talk to Rico about this," said Sunny.
"Rico's not going to let you go, Sunny. If you're going to do this, you're gonna have to do it on your own."
"On my own, huh?" said Sunny, feeling deflated.
"Sink or swim, Sunny Bun. We all have to grow up sometime," said Gale.
"Yeah, I know," said Sunny.
"But you're right, Shug, you can't do it alone. You need the right people to make it happen. Being a star is all about connections. Have you met anyone at all the parties you've been to that could help you?" said Gale.
Sunny thought for a moment. She had been to quite a few parties with Rico, but now that she thought about it, Rico had not really introduced her to many people; he'd always kept her at a distance from the Hollywood people. And Sunny, not being very outgoing, had not met many people on her own. But there was one person that she remembered that could possibly help her.
"Ravish," said Sunny."He's from England or something. He's got a really cool accent. Rico doesn't want to admit it, but I can tell that he's jealous. Well, anyway, the guy is like an investor. He funds movies . Ravish is here in Las Vegas right now? He's going to throw a big party somewhere. Is this fate or what? It's like fate telling me where to go next. I can feel it," said Sunny.
"Maybe it's destiny calling, Sunny. See if you can find him, baby, you need to find him, "said Gale. "He might be the very person that you need."
"But I don't have a clue where to look." said Sunny.
"Well, if this RaVISH is as big of a big-shot as you say, and he's throwing a big party somewhere in Las Vegas, then he shouldn't be too hard to find.," said Gale "Besides, Sunny, you're famous. You're practically royalty. I'm sure if you ask around, you'll find the right person to help you find him," said Gale. "Well, I gotta go, Sunny Bun. I've probably talked your ear off but keep me posted on how things go and just remember, Shug, no matter what happens, remember, there's no place like Kansas," said Gale.
"Yeah," said Sunny, with a slight smirk. "Love you, Gale,"
"Back at you, Sunny Bun," said Gale and she hung up.
There was a knock at the door. Sunny opened it and found Rico looking sad and desperate with tear-filled eyes.
Rico wrapped his arms around her, and Sunny sighed in relief. Maybe the fairy-tale can go on forever, thought Sunny, and she turned off the lights and settled into a loving slumber.

An Unwavering Craftsman
Given the hereditary nature of classes, everyone expects Damien—the child of two high-tiered adventurers—to be granted a high-tier combat class of his own. Expectations are betrayed, however, when Damien finds himself instead saddled with a crafting class of the lowest possible tier: [Neophyte Tailor]. Left practically crippled compared to those with better classes, Damien wants to avoid becoming a pawn in the machinations of the nobility, desiring only to grind his level in peace while wondering why the usual rules of inheritance were broken. Was it his desire to excel by his own effort, rather than an unearned blessing from a god? Did the Five take offence at his opinions on the unfairness of hereditary classes? Or maybe it was something to do with the alien voice that intruded on his ceremony? A voice that offers great power, and freedom from the tyranny of the Five, but that never names its price. This story is litRPG-lite. While the class someone possesses controls most of their lives, people don't get dinged at for every level they gain, nor can they see their status without undergoing a special ritual. The MC has no romantic interest. Crafting is merely a way to game the system, and doesn't feature heavily in the story, aside from a few descriptions on how they're carrying out the system abuse. There is, on one unfortunate occasion, maths. The pace is quick. This was a participant in the Spring 2022 writathon. (i.e. it was posted as-written at high speed. I may give it another editing pass in the future.)
