《Vegas Sushi》15. Heaven

The 1959 Pink Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz came on to the street. It's high beams cut through the darkness and the engine growled angry as it flew at 100 miles per hour away from the Pearl.
Gates reached an empty intersection and spun around doing figure eights.
"Stop it you're going to kill us." said Sunny.
"I'm gonna kill us? , think again. You killed your father, your husbands dead, and now I'm going to die and I don't even like you."
"Sunny started to cry."
"Oh go ahead, let it out toots, let it all out, crying always fixes everything."
"Shut up! You don't care about anything cause you dead...dead inside and it so said...cause your missing out on something..."
"Get out."
Gates stopped and opned the door.
"You're leaving me here?"
"it took me ten years to fix up my life and you destroyed it in one day. I'll find the fish. I'll save our asses. Thanks for fucking up my life toots.""
Sunny was reluctant. Toto was barking at Gates.
Gates drove off. He reached the intersection and stopped at a red light. He could still see Sunny in the rearview. She looked like someone who didn't have a clue where to go or how to start.
He got a phone call and it said the pot was at ten million. He needed Sunny's money. She had at least a hundred grand. He knew it. Rico was go into use it to by the fish from Sheek, but plans when wrong. Gates knew Sunny had money somewhere.
The locker.
it had to be the locker at the bus terminal. It was the key he'd found in her purse. He wasn't going to take it before but he would take it now. He was sure he'd win the poker tournament. Then he would pay Sunny back.
He went back to her. Drove up beside her as she walked hurt on the street.
"Get in." Sunny ignored him and kept walking. "Sunny get in."
"Get away from me, I kill people remember. So why don't you go find the fish detective and save yoourself."
"Look maybe I took it too far. I was angry. Besides I wouldn't have made it out of the desert alive if it wasn't for you. I think we work well together you know, and I still don't know how you got the thing from Ivan."

"You're just saying that because you want my money."
"it's true I'll be honest with you. I do need your money but I can't leave you here. I'm not completely heartless yet. This place is crawling with street demons."
"Street demons?"
"Yeah look over there." Sunny watched as from the shadow men came. They walked funny like zombies, bodies twitching.
"Listen we got to go now."
The street demons were coming at them. Sunny got in the car. Gates didn't waste time, he put he car in drive and floored it hitting several demons and the others ran after them.
"I'm starting to hate Vegas," Sunny said.
"You see why I want to get out," said Gates.
***
They went back to the hotel. They stood out on the balcony watching the lights of Las Vegas.
Sunny looked beautilf int he moonlight. She wanted to be kissed. Her eyes were calling Gates. Gates obliged. he could die tomorrow.
"I want you know that there's a good chance we may not make it out alive. I want you know that I'm okay with that. "
So lets drink up. He poured her drink with some sleep powder. When she was out. He went through her bag finding the key. Toto growled at him.
"What? I'm just going to borrow it. I'll win the tournament, then I'll pay her back. Plenty of time to find the fish. "
Toto groaned and sat back in his chair.
Gates left Sunny on the couch and he left to the bus station.
***
It was eleven thirty in the morning when Gates got to Heaven. Heaven was a large convention hall on an Indian Reservation.
Gates parked right next to Leon Brown's Monte Carlo. A man came up to Gates and offered to buy the Cadillac on the spot but Gates refused. There was no way Gates was ever going to part with the Cadillac.
Gates walked up the steps to the front door and something caught his eye. It was a stuffed badger in battle with three large rattle snakes with their fangs exposed. It gave Gates a chill and thought about what he was getting into.
He was walking into a snake den. Ivan Smirnoff would be here, Leon Brown, as well as any other low life poker player in Vegas. Gates was about to win big in life but he might piss off a lot of people doing so. Pissing off a lot of rattlesnakes. Ivan Smirnoff was said to be the devil himself.

Then there was Leon Brown who was now working with Ivan. How could Gates truly trust him.
Gates registered.
"I'm ready to win," said Gates.
"Wow that's confidence. But you do got a lot of great competition this year." said Leon.
"I'm not worried."
Ivan Smirnoff saw Gates and raised his glass at him. Gates nodded.
At twelve noon the playing began. Gates was on one side of the room and Ivan was on the other.
Gates had had a great start. He was cleaning up on his side of the room. He would look over at Ivan from time to time and Ivan was doing the same. They were like to runaway cars heading right for each other.
Things were going just as Gates had planned. He continued to win. He started to feel the pain coming in from using the gift. He started to shake.
Gates began to pant as if he were having an asthma attack. He took a deep breath to control himself.
"Okay Cowboy, now we play said Ivan. But I want your car."
"What ?" said Gates.
"Ivan wants to bet cars. As the reigning champion he has the right to ask for you title to be included in the pot."
"And if I don't," said Gates.
"then you forfeit."
"Forfeit and he wins all the money."
Gates looked over at Ivan who looked over at Leon.
Leon had a grin on his face like a cat who'd just swallowed a gold fish. This was Leon's doing. He wanted the car and was going to do whatever it took to get it.
"Let's play," said Gates. He threw his car keys at the dealer. They played like masters. One would win one game and the other the next.
It went like this for sometime each man sizing up the other. Each man trying to figure out the other man's game.
Gates began to shake and fell out of seat and laid on the ground holding his chest as if he were having a heart attack. Gates felt as if a sledge hammer hit him in the chest and he fell back and knocked over his seat. When he closed his eyes he saw Sunny. Beautiful Sunny. He was kissing her. he could no longer play. His nose was bleeding.
"Sorry Ivan but I have to go."
"Niet!" said Ivan. " We play till we finish."
"I wanna cash in my chips said Gates."
"If you don't play your forfeit and you lose your car." said the Dealer.
"Hey if the man wants to forfeit let him forfeit." said Leon.
"You'd like that wouldn't you, Leon."
Gates didn't want to lose the Cadillac and he certainly didn't want to give Leon the satisfaction of getting the car from him. All he could see was Sunny.
He couldn't get the girl out of his mind and he felt as if his something were about to explode in his chest. He was about to have a new attack.
He took a bottle vodka and drank the rest.
"you see that he drank a whole bottle of tequila like it was nothing. That boy's got some demons." Said Leon. But the tequila calmed him down.
"Fine we play on more hand, winner takes all." said Gates.
"Deal" said Ivan.
The cards were dealt. Ivan gave up five cards and Gates did the same. He had a feeling.
Ivan showed his cards first with a straight flush. Ivan cheered but the dealer turned to Gates cards and one by one they revealed a royal flush ace high spades.
Gate was in too much in pain to cheer.
"Cash me out." said Gates and he tipped the dealer. Ivan slammed his fists and got up. He was ready to charge Gates but security held him back.
Gates got his cash. Five million dollars in three duffel bags and then he left.
Gates got his car keys and gave Leon and Leon looked away I shame.
"you're not getting my Cadillac. You scammed me Leon."
Gates went out to the parking lot walking towards his car when from behind her heard Ivan's voice.
"hey Cowboy." said Ivan.
Gates turned around and saw Ivan holding a bazooka. Ivan fired and the missile went straight and hit the Cadillac. It exploded into a ball of flame . Gates was thrown back ten feet.
"I win." said Ivan

Recruit - An Infinite Labyrinth prequel
A prequel to The Infinite Labyrinth. The year is 1816. The British Empire is in full swing, under the auspices of King George III. The Infinite Labyrinth has been pouring out its product from beyond our reality and fostered a new industrial revolution. Times are changing, and the people of London are feeling the winds of the revolution while British Professionals push into the Labyrinth. The newly formed Artefact Hunting Company is looking for recruits, and they have new technology to help them. From the slums of London, they aim to recruit a new wave of Professionals. And make Zacharias and the Earl of Carnavon lots of money. So, for Rowan Rivers and a handful of lucky ones, it's time to head into the Labyrinth, and discover what makes it different from England. And what makes THEM different? Recruit is a bunch of chapters I wrote to create to the setting, mood, and game systems of the Infinite Labyrinth. It is NOT a complete story in the classic sense. It's more of a slice of life view of early days of a normal Professional from the Infinite Labyrinth, and it's heavy on info-dump. It's 90% canon - there's probably a bit of a difference between how some characters and common behaviour are portrayed here and how they'll come out in the main story. Set two years before the events that kick-start the main series, it features some of the secondary/peripheral characters of the Infinite Labyrinth and will tell you all about the basic mechanics of the Labyrinth's RPG system. It can be considered a spoiler, as the characters in the Infinite Labyrinth are going to need to figure out all that, on their own. But if you like a much deeper exposition in the mechanics, here it is. The entire prequel is about 80 pages long.

A Mildly Odd Reality Breaker
Omar receives an unexpected visitor who comes baring a gift—a "registration ticket"—in the form of a small metal card. The ticket is itself an offer to participate in the game, "Reality Break." Accepting this offer means that Omar will be able to perceive the true nature of reality where there is not one, but two dimensions of time, and in this second dimension history changes (and somewhat "frequently"). Along with this, he will also gain access to the "chronopause"; another reality that is not so much parallel to our own as it is perpendicular, which acts as both a place and the natural boundary between non-sequential points on the timeline. Using the chronopause, Omar will become a chrononaut with the ability to travel through time, and as a player, he will be given a cybernetic interface and his own portable extradimensional storage space. It's a strange conversation, but due to Omar's dismally short attention span, he only consciously hears that last bit about the portable pocket space, and that's only after the physics-defying void is opened in his living room and literally waved in front of his face. Reality is certainly stranger than most people realize, but then again, so is Omar. Thankfully, he responds well to shiny things, and for better or for worse, his chronic inattentiveness is the least of his psychological issues. Omar also has a mild form of "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" which presents itself as an occasional, arbitrary need to disobey others (especially authority figures). However, his oddest psychological issue by far is his "abnormally hyperactive" subconscious mind. Outwardly and consciously, Omar is a lazy, apathetic man-child prone to mildly asinine behavior. Subconsciously, he's some sort of genius capable of extraordinary feats of cognition. Most of the time, Omar is a (technically) functioning adult, but in order to live as such, he must rely entirely upon unusual abilities he's completely unaware of, despite the fact that he uses them regularly. Up until now, his life had merely been ridiculous, but now it was also a game. Note: The narrative style is that of a reliable narrator with a "3rd-person sarcastic" POV. This story takes place in the Reality Breakers/Chronopause universe.
