Pope sat down and started slightly crying. We all sat down around him.
"Denmark was hung for burying his wife. And now they defiled her grave." He said softly. Kie rubbed his arm reassuringly.
Then Pope reached in the casket and pulled something out. He wiped his nose and brushed it off, showing a penny like thing that had her name on it.
"This must have been from Denmark." Sarah said with a smile as she pulled out a wedding ring.
Pope sat the name coin back in the casket and Sarah put back the wedding ring. "We can't leave her like this." Pope told us. "We won't." John B said.
JJ and JB put the lid back on and hammered it back to the casket. Pope picked flowers and put them on it. Then we buried her back in her grave.
During the process, JJ took off his jacket, leaving him in a sleeveless shirt and my God. It was kind of hard to focus.
"I just don't understand it. He hides his gold so no one finds it for 170 years. And then he sends his message to his son Robert to come here to his mothers grave but the message never gets to him. And Denmark wanted him to find the cross. I know we're in the right spot." Pope complained as JJ walked over to me, where I was leaning against the van.
I had put his jacket on over my shirt. I was a little cold but mainly it was just so he wouldn't put it back on and I could admire him more.
"I know we're in the right spot, it just feels like," Pope continued. "Like we missed something?" JJ asked. He was looking up at the tree and walked around to the back of the van.
"Guys. Come here." He told us. He got on top of the van and then he held out his hand, gesturing for me to come up with him so I did.
"That looks like..." He pointed to a hole on the tree. "The painting in the island room." I said.
"It's worth a shot, right?" JJ asked them. "Yeah," Kie replied. "Let's do it." John B said. "Go for it." JJ told me. Ah so that's why he wanted me up there.
"No chance." I told him. "You do it!" Sarah said from below. "Sorry, I went into the storm drain so..." I said. "They did go in the storm drain," Pope agreed.
"Yeah, no, I'm gonna do it. It's just..." J said. "He's scared," I whispered to them. "I'm not scared, dude," JJ protested. "You seem scared." I replied as he started reaching his hand in the hole.
"There's something in here." He said. His arm was nearly all the way in it.
Then he started screaming like something got his arm. Immediately, we all tried to help him out, the rest grabbing him at the bottom of the van and me grabbing his waist.
Then he just stopped and started laughing. "Oh you fuckin asshole." I said and let go of him, shoving him back into the tree as I let him go. "I got all of you on that one," J continued laughing.
"Oh, yeah. Real original." Pope replied. "Funny," Kie said sarcastically. "Wait, but seriously there is something in here." JJ told us.
He actually did pull out something. A dark red and gold capsule. "Let me see it." Pope told him. JJ threw it down to him.

"HMS Royal Merchant." Pope read as JJ jumped off the van. "Give it to the captain," He grabbed it from Pope as I sat on the top of the van with my legs over the side.
"Here we go. It's a spyglass." He said and pulled it out. "There's something on the side." I told them as he tried to look through it. John B and Pope grabbed it from J.
"An inscription right there. Look at that shit." John B said. Pope took it and looked at it. "Oh, what does it say?" JJ asked.
"You've come this far. Do not falter. The cross is on the Freedman's alter." Pope read.
"Freedman's alter. The cross is at the church!" Pope exclaimed. "What are we doing here, guys?! Come on!" JJ yelled.
Holy shit. Sometimes we are good at this shit.
"We got it!" Pope said. "Woogity-woogity!" JJ and Pope said in unison as they did the Pogue handshake.
JJ helped me down, grabbing me by my waist, basically making sure I didn't fall. Then we all ran into the van.
However, with our luck, the tide was even more high by the time we got back to the rode. "Ah crap! The tide!" Pope said. "This doesn't look good." He added.
"How deep is that?" Kie asked. "I don't know. The roads gone." JB replied. He came to a halting stop. "Tide rose faster than I thought it would." I said, looking out the window on the side.
"Just a little bit." John B replied. "Uh, twins, how high are the spark plugs?" JJ asked us. "They're good." I replied with doubt in my voice. "They're fine," John B said at the same time.
"No, how high are they?" Pope demanded. "Oh..." I said like I didn't hear the question the first time. "Um..." JB added. "Just above the taillight." I told them, looking out the window again.
"Okay, so that's, what, three feet?" Pope questioned. "That's three feet, yeah." I agreed quietly.
"The water can't be three feet deep," Kie reasoned. "Then what's the problem?" John B asked. "Not a problem. No. We're good. We're good. She'll make it." JJ said, trying to convince us and himself more or less.
"Yeah. Fasten your seatbelts. Hold onto something. We're going into hyperdrive." John B told us. "I'm gonna say a quick prayer." I said sarcastically and acted like I was.
Then John B hit it. First it got stuck in the mud. We all shouted encouragement as a mixture of water and mud flew up the sides of the van.
We nearly got out of the tide, causing us to all yell, "we got it", but I think we jinxed us because the van immediately turned sideways and crashed into the trees.
"No, no, no." John B repeated. "I think we miscalculated." Pope said which made me turn around and hold up my fingers close together like 'just a bit'.
"I knew I should've driven." JJ said.
So we all got out of the van. We had to climb out the back window since the doors would cause water to flood in. The water was knee high so there was no avoiding getting wet.
"All right. Maybe we can walk from here." Pope said. "What? And leave the Twinkie? The tides coming in," John B defended. We would never leave the Twinkie to die.

"So what are we supposed to do?" Sarah asked. "Not stay here." JJ replied.
We all sat in silence for a second.
"I can take my dads truck." Kie offered. "Kie, are you sure?" John B asked her. She'd probably die after that. "How much worse can it get, you know?" Kie said and shrugged.
"We'll need something to pull her out with. There's a winch at the Château." I told them. "That's like, two miles." I added.
"Yeah, that's a good idea." Kie agreed. "I'll go with you." I told Kie. "Yeah me too." JJ said. We both looked at him. "Protection," He shrugged. Kind of unnecessary but whatever. We could protect ourselves but we let him come.
"Okay, if you're gonna do it, let's go, okay?" John B told us. "Tides comin in. Twinkies going underwater." He added. We started walking through the water and got to high ground where it wasn't wet.
After about a 45 minute hike, we got to Kie's house.
"You sure you wanna do this?" JJ asked Kie as we crouched outside the fence. "A little Dad theft auto?" I added. "No." Kie replied blantly.
"All right. Go, go, go, go, go." JJ said and opened the gate. Kie snuck upstairs and after a minute or two she ran back out to us.
She threw the keys to me as JJ opened the gate again and I ran to the truck. I started it as they both ran in, J in the back.
No one talked on the drive to the Chât. JJ offered to go get the wench, as he knew where it was and it would be easier.
"It's in the surf shack." I reminded him as he got out.
We watched as he ran to the shack, jumping a log but then landing face first. "I'm okay!" He yelled at us as he jumped back up.
Kie and I just looked at each other and laughed, covering our mouths so it was muffled. What an idiot. I reminded myself that he was my idiot.
We waited for a minute but it shouldn't have taken that long in the first place. I honked the horn and yelled his name but he didn't come. I honked two more times and he still wasn't there.
Then he finally came out with the wench and a rope. However, it was with his slimy piece of shit father.
"What the fuck." I said while Kie said "What the frick."
"No. Immediately no." I told J and got out of the truck. "What is this?" Kie asked as Luke got in the truck. "I know. Just get in the truck." JJ told me as he put the wench and rope in the bed.
His mood had obviously changed and I don't blame him. I hate his dad so much too.
"I'm sorry. The Twinkies drowning right now, J. What the hell is this?" I asked him as he tried to walk around to the other side. "Okay, listen to me." He grabbed me by his jacket that I still had on.
"I need to get into the marina at the Island Club. There's a boat there that he can take." JJ told me. "There's a sticker on the truck. Twenty minutes, that's all I need." He added.
He had a very pleading look in his eyes. It was more of a help me please look but also he looked scared. And I hated that even more.
"The Twinkies gonna be a submarine in 20 minutes!" I yelled as we he went to the other side and we both looked at each other over the hood.
I would do anything for JJ, unless it included his father. The piece of shit can die.
"I know. I know, (Y/N)." JJ said and leaned over the hood. He was clearly stressed. "Leave him, and we can come back." I told J in a calmer voice.
"The cops are after him!" JJ yelled and slammed his fist on the hood. "If I do this, maybe I will never have to do it again." He said and got in the truck. This time I didn't argue.
Luke stared at me as I opened the door. He looked like he wanted to say something so I made sure he didn't. "Don't fucking look at me. Or talk to me." I told him.
On the way to the marina, Luke stopped us. "Hey, pull up to Home Foods here. I'm gonna need provisions." He said. I didn't answer and just stared at the road, gripping the wheel tighter.
I saw Luke give JJ a look from the mirror and then J said, "(Y/N)", in a pleading voice that made me pull over.
JJ and Kie got out to go get the stuff and Luke told them exactly what to get.
Luke started drumming on the seat to the music.
I tried to not say anything but couldn't. "You're a terrible father, you know." I told him. "Yeah, preach it to me. Set me straight." Luke replied. He clearly didn't care and it made my blood boil.
"Do you have any idea how special your son is? How great he is? How much he cares for other people?" I asked Luke. "Or do you not have enough brain cells to know." I added.
"He's a thief is what he is," Luke replied. I pulled my lips together tightly. "And what are you?" I asked. "You're just a wasted piece of shit that never did a single fucking thing but get messed up and hustle people." I told him, answering myself.
"It's pathetic." I added. "You know, you sound just like your mama. Little shit who thought she was better than everybody else." Luke said. He paused and got closer to me.
"It's a shame, you know, that she left you." He laughed. "Oh, wait. Not just her. Your daddy left too, didn't he?" He laughed even more.
I felt like steam was about to come out of my ears like in the movies.
"I wonder why they did. Oh, actually I don't. You're an obnoxious shit that has a mouth bigger than your own parents could handle." Luke continued. JJ and Kie walked out of the store, both holding bags full.
"Shit. I'd abandon you too." Luke said.
That was it. I didn't even regret what I did next, elbowing him so hard in the face that he flew back to the backseat, his nose bleeding and probably broke.
I nearly reached back and beat him up but Kie and J got in the car.
They both just looked at him and then back at me but didn't say anything.
Finally, after a long car ride of silence, we got to the marina. JJ got out. "Hey, why don't you tell your dad I said hi?" Luke told me, delivering one last blow.
"Shut up," JJ told him and grabbed his shoulder before I beat the shit out of him. "Come on," He pulled Luke out.
"Make it quick." Kie told JJ as they started walking.
"Hey, Luke." I called after them. They both turned around. I flipped Luke off and mouthed 'Fuck you'. "Go, Go," JJ shoved him as he started coming back to the truck.
After a while of waiting for them, I decided to go get JJ. I wanted to hug him really, so Kie stayed in the car.
When I got there, Luke had just gone off on his boat. When JJ turned around, he had pill bottles in his hand and he threw them into the ocean. He clearly was holding back tears as he walked up to me.
I didn't even hug him first, he just fell into my arms. We stayed like that for a moment. I'm pretty sure J started crying but I wouldn't ever tell anyone that.
When he decided he was okay to go back, we did, our arms over each other's shoulders.

Wild Steam
Get on a train. Head east. Get on a ship. Travel further east, in style. See some wonders of the world. Find what was lost. Find where home is. How hard is any of that?Well, for Jake Ranger, pretty damned hard. The world being a wild, crazy mess from a global altering event called the Shattering doesn’t help much. Nor does being a famous folk hero. That last one really sucks, because people always run up to famous heroes and beg them for help with all their problems. Then there are the actual outlaws and monsters. They don’t help much either. Mostly they just get in the way and make everything way worse. And in a world that is so screwed up decades after the Shattering, there is a lot of variety to both outlaw and monster. Then there are the more civilized, (read: sane), non-human folk, and good old humans as well. They all get along just spectacularly. Totally best friends, on every level, for life. Of course getting to the east coast is only half the battle. Once there, he must contend with the so-called “civilized people.” Then there’s the ship ride; pirates and sea monsters are a thing too, after all. Should have read the brochure. But when the chips are down, the bad guys are winning and the wild winds of chaos are blowing, it helps to have a fighter on your side. Even if he is a little wild. After all, that’s not really a problem. That’s what beautiful women and lots of gold is for. Proper motivation is always key to success. Welcome to a Steampunk, Wild West, Victorian era, Lovecraftian infested, fantasy, shoot ‘em up world. Complete with a slow build harem of badass beautiful women, crazy adventures, and fun, monstrous villains. Welcome to the world of Wild Steam. Do enjoy your stay.
