《The Software Detective》2.15 Ronald’s Story

"That doesn't make any sense, Detective Rose. We found their prints on the knife." One technician said.
"Of course, if we only looked at the clues directly presented to you, then yes, we clearly have a murder and our prime suspects. However, there are pieces of evidence that we are overlooking." Kalina said, walking over to the body. "The carpet here is damp and has an indent in it."
Kalina walked over to the chair next. "Isn't it strange that this chair is laying here? Ronald was home, according to the lovebirds. No one else was here, and he was by himself. So why would he bring the chair out of the dining room and into the living room?"
"That's a good point. I didn't think of that, but you said there was no murder. That's impossible. I mean, the guy has a knife sticking out of his back." A technician said. "There's no way someone could stab themself in the back."
"Well, if you think about it, it's elementary, my dear technician. He froze the knife in a block of ice, then jumped backwards from the chair and landed on the knife." Kalina said, she turned to Anyiah, "I'm sorry you had to find out this way, but your husband ended his own life."
"But why would he do such a thing? He never seemed upset or depressed." Aniyah said, tearing up.
"Uh Detective Rose, I found this." a technician said, coming down from the stairs. "It's Robert's suicide note."
Kalina turned to Aniyah. "You wanted answers Aniyah, here they are." Kalina turned back to the technician and continued, "You don't have to read the whole thing, but tell us Ronald's story."
"Alright detective, but this is a hard story to hear." the technician cleared his thought, then continued. "Ronald had wanted children for quite some time. So much so that he talked to his wife, and they tried for a baby. However, Aniyah could not get pregnant. Not because there were complications with her or Ronald. She was aborting the child each time she got pregnant."

Everyone's eyes went wide, and they looked over at Aniyah. Derenik scooted further from Aniyah on the couch.
"Ronald discovered what his wife was doing because he handled all the finances, so when he received the bill from the abortion clinic, he understood what was going on. By the time he saw the third set of clinics, he stopped trying for a child. They didn't touch each other for a month, partially because he was so hurt. So even though his wife would start with him, he couldn't bring himself to touch her." the technician turned the page. "Later on, Aniyah went on a girl's trip for a month with a few of her girlfriends that are also staying at home wives. That's when he decided he would better himself for his wife. He started hitting the gym more and improved his diet. He really changed his life around just so he could be a better husband and then finally she would have his child."
The technicians that were standing behind me they were in the foyer now listening to their coworker. One was wiping a tear from his eye and the other was rubbing his back.
"Then one day when he was working from home, it was hot in his office, so he cracked open a window to let in some air. While he was working, he heard his wife giggling outside. Ronald could only think that she was excited to see him and was laughing with excitement to tell him about the trip. But to his dismay, when he looked down from the window, he saw Aniyah giggling as Derenik was kissing her neck in their driveway. When he was finished, they paused, looking at each other in their eyes, then locked lips and shared a long deep kiss." The technician said, flipping to the next page. "He didn't confront them right away because the sight of his wife stepping out of his marriage devastated. He had thought that he was just another terrible husband, but he was just being used. Although he had hoped his wife would come to her senses or Derenik would have some morals to break this arrangement with a married woman. With a feeling that he can't trust his wife anymore, he decided he would set up cameras around the inside and outside of the house."

Derenik started running his hands through his hair. Aniyah stared at the ground, arms crossed, her left leg bouncing up and down like a jackhammer.
Another technician came down from upstairs with a few flash drives in his hand. "Detectives, we found these in the study. They contain security footage of inside the house and around the exterior. Fair warning it's some clips are pretty graphic."
"There won't be any need to watch the videos. I think we can just use our imagination." I said. There was no need for us to watch Ronald's pregnant wife get defiled by his neighbor. Wait...
"For months Ronald watched his wife commit adultery in high definition. Then what broke the camel's back was when he was changing out their old box spring and found a pregnancy test tucked underneath the bed." The technician cleared his throat. "This next part, guys, is pretty rough, so I will be even more brief than I already have."
"Ronald looked at the test, it was positive. Ronald knew the child wasn't his. They hadn't had sex in months. Completely betrayed, he felt into a deeper depression. Although he knew she was going to abort the child just like she had done for his. So again, he kept silent. Then one day he opened a doctor's bill, and it was for a baby ultrasound." The technician said.
Everyone was looking at Aniyah continued to stare at the ground, but her leg wasn't bouncing anymore. Instead, she was looking off into the distance. Her face was now not full of sadness and regret, but one of anger and dismay.
"Devastated at the revelation, his wife will have kids with another man. Ronald wrote how he would end it all and did exactly what Kalina described." The technician finished his story. Then we all looked at Ronald on the floor.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.

Dawn of the Epoch
Hunter called himself an archaeologist, but he was a modern day treasure hunter. Tiyana was a scientist devoted to her craft. They were passionate people, wholly devoted to their work. Neither of them had time for love. Neither of them could resist it when it happened. Neither of them knew that the world would need the two of them to save it from a tyrannical pre-historic overlord, his cyborg vampire paramour, and their army of mindless drudges.Dawn of the Epoch is an epic science fiction novel about dark matter, death rays, nuclear warfare, and the Large Hadron Collider, but it is also a fantasy novel about medieval warriors, alchemy, and ancient gods. Dawn of the Epoch blends fantasy with reality, bringing mythology to life today. It is also an apocalyptic thriller spanning the globe from the Pyramids of Egypt to the heart of Africa to the majesty of the Himalayas. It is an epic hybrid-genre story with intense action sequences, magic, mythology, suspenseful plot twists, countless obstacles for the protagonists to overcome, and an utterly Machiavellian supernatural villain.Testimonials:"Probably one of my favorite books I've read to date. Brilliantly complex, adoringly rendered and quizzically intense. A must read and one I plan to revisit, and share!"- Amgwatts, Wattpad Reader"This has to be one of the most original and well written novels I have had the pleasure to read, on Wattpad and in general. It was captivating, interesting, immersive and above all, fantastic. I was left in awe of the beings, history and world you created. It was never dull, dry or predicable and it was a nice change from what seems to be the ever popular teen romance with vampires or werewolves or 'bad boys that are actually romantic good boys.' In the end it was a very pleasant surprise."-IridescentLies, Wattpad Readerhttp://dawnoftheepoch.weebly.com
