《Being Human》27. Winter Forecast
Advertisement
It was a cold day in Beach city and sat around the Beach house's fireplace was Y/n, Steven and Connie. A bag of open marshmallows sat between the group while Y/n was roasting marshmallows on a stick.
"I can't believe it's already winter...Summer feels like it was just a few weeks ago." Y/n says as he looks at the marshmallow.
"Mmm... You're roasting good!" Steven comments as Y/n withdraws a roasted marshmallow away from the fire and hold it up to Steven who blows at the marshmallow and eats it.
"Mmmh..." Steven hums in delight.
"Good job not setting that one on fire." Connie says.
"Well for someone who's never roasted Marshmallow's before, I think I'm getting the hang of it." Y/n chuckles as he puts a new one on the stick and begins roasting it.
"Mm-hmm. What is it about marshmallows that make them so... good?" Steven ponders.
"It's probably the animal by-product." Connie comments.
"You mean like... poop?" Steven asks a little disgusted.
Connie picks up a marshmallow. "No. Stuff like hooves, bone marrow, collagen..." She eats it. "and lots of sugar and corn syrup."
"Corn Sugar!" Steven yells.
Y/n looks at his marshmallow now. "Suddenly, I'm not in mood for Marshmallows..." He comments.
"Sugar syrup!" Connie just yells as she joins in with Steven and shoves a handful of marshmallows into her mouth. "Mmm! Bone marrow!"
Steven and Connie laugh together, when Connie's cellphone rings.
Connie picks up the phone now. "Hello?"
"Have you been watching World Weather News?" Her mother's voice could be heard saying on the phone.
"Um... no." Connie says with her mouth still full and she swallows the marshmallows in her mouth. "Steven's still grounded from watching TV."
"I see. Well, there's a snowstorm on its way to Beach City, and I don't want you getting snowed in. You need to get a ride home this instant. Otherwise your father is gonna try to pick you up." Connie's mother warns.
Connie gets worried. "Oh no. Don't send Dad. I'll be home soon." She hangs up her phone. "Looks like I gotta get going."
"Oh, no..." Steven with a mouth full of marshmallows says.
"There's a snowstorm coming through, and my parents don't want me getting stuck here." Connie tells the two.
"A snow storm huh?" Y/n asks. "That would explain the cold weather."
Steven swallows his marshmallows. "Man! That stinks!"
Connie sighs. "Wouldn't it be fun if we all got snowed in together?"
Steven gasps. "We could stay up all night and watch the snow fall!"
Steven and Connie just smile at each other when the Gem then walks into the house from the Crystal Temple.
"Hello, you three." Garnet greets.
"Hi, Garnet." Steven and Connie say together.
"Hey." Y/n gives a friendly wave.
"You all having a nice time?" Pearl asks.
The three get up from the fire place now as they walk over to join the gems. "Yeah, but Connie has to go soon. There's a snowstorm-a-comin."
"Maybe the storm will miss us. Sometimes the forecast is completely wrong." Connie says hopefully.
"Nope. It's definitely going to snow." Garnet says as she holds her shades.
Amethyst makes a rap gesture. "That's the 411, yo."
"Trust." Garnet comments.
Steven gasps and whispers to Connie. "Garnet has future vision."
"You all better get yourselves to Greg's." Garnet advises now.
"Wait! We can't go yet." Steven cries as he turns to Connie. " I've got to show you this TubeTube video really quick." Steven tires to stall.

"Steven." Garnet says.
"It's only, like, one minute long." Steven
Garnet walks over and kneels in front of Steven. "I know you don't want to go, but you have to make the right choice." She kisses him on the forehead. "Mwah!"
Steven blushes and giggles, holding his forehead. "That tickles!"
Y/n, Steven and Connie arrive at Greg's car wash, when it begins to snow.
Steven was watching the snow fall. "Wow!" He says reach his hand out. " Aah!" He then cries as he gets pelted in the head by a snowball.
"Gotcha, Steven!" Connie laughs.
Steven and Connie laugh together as Y/n wipes the snowball off Steven's head.
"Come on, kids. Oh and Y/n." Greg nervously chuckles. "We got to go if we're gonna beat the storm. I'll start the van." Greg twirls his car keys now. ♫ Carabeena Carabeena ♫
"Aw, do we got to go?" Steven asks.
"Yes. The Maheswarans think I'm a responsible parent, and I've got to maintain that image." Greg says back.
Connie sighs. "Guess this is it."
"Well, Dad". Steven grabs Connie and smushes a snowball into her face, causing her to giggle. "If you want to look responsible, you should probably change out of that sweatsuit."
"But it's cherries. Everybody likes cherries. I'm a cherry man!" Greg pauses as he looks to Y/n for his input.
"Well...I don't immediately put responsibility and cherries in the same sentence." Y/n admits.
"Okay, Just give me a second to change." Greg says as he walks to the back of his van.
"Steven, are you procrastinating?" Connie whispers to Steven.
"Nah. I'm just killing time." Steven whispers back.
Greg rummages through a clothing pile in the back of his van and pulls out a dark green turtleneck sweater. "Aha! You can practically smell the responsibility."
"Isn't that the turtleneck you wore the first time you met them?" Y/n asks remembering it.
"They're gonna think you only have one fancy shirt." Steven says.
"... I do only have one fancy shirt." Greg replies.
"Don't worry, Dad. We'll help you find the perfect, most responsible outfit." Steven reassures him.
"I don't know." Greg says as he looks at a pile of clothes in his van. "I haven't worn any of this stuff in years."
Time passes by as Greg trying on various outfits, while Steven and Connie goof around in the snow. Y/n was looking at his phone as he tried to get an update on the incoming storm. Whenever Greg comes out of the van with a new outfit, Steven and Connie stop playing and shake their heads in disagreement, forcing Greg back into the van to change. He eventually comes out of the van wearing a disco outfit.
"Okay, how about this one?" Greg asks fed up.
"... I can't lie." Steven starts. "That is the best outfit I've ever seen."
"We really need to leave now, otherwise were never going to make it." Y/n says to Greg.
"Okay let's go!" Greg says.
Steven, Y/n and Connie get into the van and Greg starts driving off. The group watch as snow begins to cover the windshield.
"Holy moly!" Greg cries and he turns on the car heater and windshield wipers. "That snow is really coming down!"
We should have left earlier." Y/n comments.
The van rolls over a patch of ice, causing it to skid wildly on the road. The group starts screaming as the van spins out of control and the snow constantly covers the windshield, despite the wipers. The van eventually crashes into a snowbank on the side of the road. The group quickly catch their breath.

"W-what are we gonna do?" Connie asks out of breath.
"Uhh... I guess we'll have to walk." Greg says.
"WHAT?!" Connie and Steven cry out.
"We can't let Steven and Connie walk in this." Y/n tries to point out.
"A responsible parent doesn't let two kids strand themselves in a van in the middle of nowhere." Greg says wanting to remain responsible.
The group starts treading through the thick snow and strong snowstorm.
"A responsible parent escorts those kids through wind, sleet, and snow to avoid making the other parent angry!" Greg strains as he yells over the howling wind.
The group eventually arrive at Connie's house. They rapidly knock on the door and ring the doorbell till Dr. and Mr. Maheswaran open the door, greeting a violently shivering Greg, Y/n, Steven, and Connie.
"H-hi, Mom. Hi, Dad." Connie says shivering.
"H-hello, Dr. and Mr. Maheswaran."
"S..sorry we're late." Greg apologies.
"We s...should have s....stayed in the van." Y/n shivers to himself cold and tired.
Connie's parents stare blankly as Steven, Y/n, Connie and Greg step into the house.
"Mom, Dad..." Connie chuckles nervously. "... You remember Mr. Universe, Y/n and Ste.."
"Do you have any idea what time it is?!" Her moth yells cutting her off.
"Why are the children blue?!" Her husband then yells as he puts to Steven and Connie who look cold.
"What are you do..." Dr Maheswaran begins to asks but Connie lets out a single sneeze and looks at her mom nervously. "... She's sick!" She cries and grabs Connie by the arm. "You're going straight to bed, young lady!" She declares as she drags her away. "That's the last time I let you out during flu season."
Mr. Maheswaran crosses his arm annoyed now. "I think you know where the door is. Since you're... standing in it."
"Oh, you've got to be..." Y/n begins to mumble under his breath
"Uhh, I kind of crashed my ride." Greg cuts Y/n off
"Are you serious?!" Mr Mahesawaran asks.
"Yes... ?" Greg timidly answers.
Mr. Maheswaran groans. "I'll go set up the pull-out couch." He says before he sighs and walks away from the three.
"Uhh... okay. So much for being responsible." Greg says sadly as he starts stroking and squeezing his hair dry from the snow. "Maybe I should have worn the floral print."
Y/n just sits down as he holds his body and continuing to shiver. "We shouldn't have wasted time changing your outfit in the first place..."
Steven stares ahead intently and gazes upon the trippy blue pattern on the back of Greg's disco outfit. Slowly, the blue pattern morphs into hypnotizing swirls, as Steven begins to sweat nervously and holds his head in anxiety.
The sound of tires screech as the van crashes again. Steven slowly wakes up as Connie, Y/n and Greg catch their breath.
"Is everyone okay?" Greg asks.
"Yeah." Connie says.
"I'm fine." Y/n answers.
Steven looks around, dazed. "W-wait... What— W-what happened?" He asks confused.
"We wiped out." Greg tells him.
"No, I mean, why are we in the van?" Steven clarifies.
"You're right. We gotta get out there and start walking if we wanna get Connie home." Greg says as Y/n and Connie look hesitant at the idea.
"Dad! No! We should stay put." Steven suddenly cries out surprising Greg.
"Steven's right. It'll be way safer this way. Otherwise we'll all end up catch a nasty cold probably." Y/n says as he looks at the heavy snow coming down out the windshield.
"My parents are all about safety." Connie says in agreement.
"Heh. They can't argue with safety." Greg chuckles.
"It'll be like camping!"
"But in cozy bucket seats!"
Time passes by as the van slowly becomes more and more covered in the snowstorm. Greg cracks an egg over a waffle maker in the back of the van, and it sizzles as it cooks.
"Thanks for dinner, Mr. Universe. Itadakimasu!" Conne begins to eat an egg waffle.
Y/n notices Greg's nearby guitar and he picks it up. "May I?" He asks Greg.
"Knock yourself out." Greg says cheerfully as he returns to cooking on the waffle iron.
Y/n begins to strum a few strings. "Any requests?" He asks.
"Hmm. Let's hear a song about... a snack monster! That loves... animal by-products! Om-nom-nom!" Connie says as she shoves her whole waffle into her mouth, causing Steven to laugh.
Y/n just chuckles at the two. "Well, I don't know about any snack monsters I'm afraid."
"Well there should be instruments lying around here. Why don't you kids improvise." Greg suggests now.
Connie and Steven waste no time in looking and soon they are able to find a harmonica and tamberouine .
"Why don't you start us off Steven and we'll jump in." Y/n says and Steven nods as he brings the harmonica up to his lips and begins to play.
Y/n close his eyes as he listens to Steven play for a while and small tune comes to his mind, He starts to strum the guitar now.
♫ I'm just a man but I know that I'm damned, All the dead seem to know where I am.
Till it began on the night of my birth, We'll be done in a turn of the earth
Lie where I land let my bones turn to sand, I was born on the lake and I don't want to leave
Every eye on the coast ever more, Will remember the sight of the ghost on the shore
Under the waves and the earth of an age, Lie a thousand old northerners graves
Deep in the night when the moon's glowing bright, They come rising up into the night
Die if I must let my bones turn to dust, I'm the Lord of the lake and I don't want to leave
All who sail off the coast ever more, Will remember the tale of the ghost on the shore. ♫
Connie begins to join in now with the tambourine
♫ I'm goin' away for a long time
I'm goin' away for a long time.♫

The three's song soon comes to an end when Connie's cellphone begins to ring again. She then picks it up. "Hello?"
"Connie, are you still at Steven Universe's house?" Connie's dad can be heard on the phone. "I'm on my way."
"Dad, no! You know how bad you are at driving in the snow! It's way too rough out here!" Connie tells him.
"I'm almost at Beach City, so start putting on your shoes." Mr Maheswaran says now.
Greg returns back to their seat and turns back on the windshield wipers.
"I see some headlights. Is that him?" Steven asks.
An engine revs as Mr. Maheswaran's car pulls around the corner.
"Don't worry. I got it this time." Mr Maheswaran' says on the phone. "Oh, wait." The car begins to swerve a bit. "Ooh! Aaaaah!"
"Dad, stop the car! You're right in front of us!" Connie says worried into the phone as everyone looks out the
Greg begins blaring the van's horn as he tries to get Mr Maheswaran's attention.
"I-I got it! I got it! I..." The car begins to swerve in circles, mere feet from the parked van. "Ooh! Aah! I- I don't got it!" The car picks up speed, heading right for the van. "I don't have anything!" Mr. Maheswaran's car smashes into the van, and the hypnotizing blue swirls Steven previously saw makes a reappearance.
Steven gets hit in the head by a snowball and screams in panic. He turns around and glares around Connie.
"Woah. Sorry, Steven." Connie says lowering her arm having just thrown the snowball.
Hey, are you okay?" Y/n asks worried.
"Y/n, Connie, what's going on?! Everything keeps repeating!" Steven cries.
Y/n and Connie just look at each other confused.
"Come on, kids. Oh and Y/n." Greg nervously chuckles. "We got to go if we're gonna beat the storm. I'll start the van." Greg twirls his car keys now. ♫ Carabeena Carabeena ♫
Steven suddenly snatches Greg's car keys.
"Hey! What the...?" Greg cries out in surprise.
"Woah..." Y/n says.
Steven then tosses them into a nearby snowbank.
"My keys! I'm not gonna find those till spring!" Greg cries.
Steven grabs Connie's arm and begins to pull her away. "Come on, Connie!"
"What?" Connie asks as she begins running away with Steven.
"Hey!" Greg calls out to the two.
"What has gotten into him?" Y/n says still surprised by Steven's shift in mood.
"Now what are we going to do? I need to get Connie home to her parents." Greg says.
Y/n turns to look at the snow bank. "I'll help you find your keys. Then we can go look for Steven and Connie." Y/n suggests and Greg nods his head in agreement.
"Thanks Y/n." Greg says as he lets out a sigh and the two head to the snow bank where Steven had thrown the keys.
Steven and Connie were still running as they passed the pier. "Let's go back to my place." Steven suggests.
"But my parents..." Connie starts to say.
Steven abruptly stops and grabs onto Connie's shoulders. "No, Connie! You have to listen to me! If we leave Beach City, bad things are gonna happen! I've seen it! Bad things! Several bad things!" He glares at her intently.
"Um... okay. Let me just call my mom and tell her." Connie says as she starts to take her phone out.
Steven and Connie were still running towards Steven's home as Connie held her phone up to her ear now.
"Mom, this is Connie. I'm staying at Steven's overnight."
"Oh, no, you're not, young lady!" Connie's mother is quick to say.
"But... Mom!" Connie tries to argue.
"You're coming home right now!" Connie's mom says.
Steven snatches Connie's phone. "Dr. Maheswaran, you can't let your husband leave the house! He can't drive in the snow!"
"What? Y-Yes, I can!" Mr Mahesawaran could be heard saying in the background of the phone call.
"Please, trust me!" Steven pleads before he tosses Connie's phone into the snow and screams.
"Hey!" Connie cries as Steven continues to pull her with him.
Steven and Connie returns back to the beach house now, where they find the Gems sitting in a triangle around the Warp Pad, levitating the Shooting Star they had retrieved on a mission previously in the center of them.
"Hold it steady. We have to send this to the Galaxy Warp without warping ourselves." Garnet says calmly.
"This is too risky." Pearl complains.
"No, it's not. Get over it." Amethyst says to her.
"If the Shooting Star goes off mid-warp, it could explode forever in Warp Space. And even if we do manage to destroy the entire Galaxy Warp, they could still find another way to get here." Pearl tells her.
"Uhh, watcha doing?" Steven asks now.
"Steven?!" Pearl cries in in shock at his sudden appearance.
"Pearl! No!" Garnet says urgently.
Pearl loses focus and pulls her hand away in shock. Everyone screams as the Shooting Star stops levitating and touches the warp pad, exploding and destroying the whole place. The blue hypnotizing pattern flashes again.
Garnet kisses Steven on the forehead. "Mwah."
"Uhhhh... What? Garnet, what happened?" Steven asks confused.
"I passed my ability to you for just a moment." Garnet explains.
"You mean... I had future visions?" Steven asks.
"Tell me what you saw." Garnet says to him.
"I saw... some good things, but mostly bad things." Steven says as he thinks back on the events that he had seen take place.
"And now you can make the right choice." Garnet tells him.
"Hmm!" Steven nods now understanding. "Connie, Y/n we have to go right this instant." Steven says and he grabs Connie's hand and runs out of the house
