Evanescent (adjective): soon passing out of sight or existence

Under the shadow of the towering trees, the car’s scarlet headlights zipped past, drawing a fading red line as it sped off into the night.

From the view of the car window, the trunks, branches, and leaves never lasted more than a split second in view. Outside the glass was a shapeless blur of gray, so indiscernible and meaningless that one could easily fall asleep leaning against the door.

However, the trees knew that they weren’t insignificant.

For decades, for centuries, for eons since the dawn of time, their magnificent roots dug far and wide, extending into the darkest layers and furthest corners. Their seedlings, drunk on the sun’s gracious rays, reached for the skies every day and night.

How could a man-made car surpass such a legacy?

Glowing crimson only a moment ago, the artificial light from the car’s rear was already being swallowed by the darkness that blanketed the trees.
