"I'm heading out to help by friend with some preparations." Alex said placing his fork on his empty plate.
"Alright..." his parents agreed almost immediately.
And with that Alex stood up to leave.
"Hmm.... I'll escort you." David said also getting up.
The two headed in the same direction but half way there,David branched off leaving Alex to proceed alone.
Alex stood at the white mahogany doors, proceeding with ringing the door bell. The doors opened and there stood Julie.
"Good morning." he greeted.
"Goodmorning." Abigail stepped aside and let Alex in.
She latter closed the door and followed behind him.
Abigail who was busy tying the balloons on a pillar noticed Alex.
"Oh Alex you're here." she said with a delighted face. "
She stepped down the ladder with a brimming smile.
But them she wore an apologetic face;"Am really sorry for bothering you this early morning."
"Nah! It's not a problem. Anyway I was all bored at home."
She smiled brightly again after his reassurance.
Alex couldn't help but admire the interior designs of the vast mansion he was currently in.
Although Abigail's family was wealthy, they preferred doing most of the preparations themselves and only hired organizers when necessary.
Suddenly Alex, recalled something; "Umm.... Abigail....wasn't it supposed to be a house party. This looks like birthday party."
Abigail chuckled and laughed when she saw the confused look on Alex.
"What's funny?"
"Nothing.... Nothing. Of cause it's a birthday party." she laughed again, "Mine and Julie's birthday."
Alex got even more confused when he recalled the invite he got last time."Then why did you tell me it was a house party?"
"I wanted to surprise you." she laughed again.
"What the hell goes on in this girl's head? It is her birthday. She's the one supposed to be getting the surprise." Alex muttered in his head, "You're crazy." he said a little bemused.
"So... How do you like the surprise?"Abigail asled with a playful smile poking Alex on his shoulder.
" Your just crazy. Period. "Alex said pretending to be angry,"You should have told me so I could get you a gift."
"A..."before Abigail could speak up, Thomas walked up to them;" Ah.... Alex when did you arrive. "he stretched out his arm to shake Alex's.

"I just arrived. I didn't know you would be here."
"Well, here I am. I was helping with the preparation in the backyard."
After the small chat, Alex helped with the preparations for about an hour.
"Ah....I see your almost done." At this point, Abigail's mom walked down stairs and saw the beatiful decoration.
"Yes mom. But there's still some stuff we need to buy." Julie responded.
"Ahh.... I see, here's the credit card. Go buy what you need." she handed over a debit card to Julie.
"Perfect... Now...Alex and Julie, you go to the mall and buy the Cakes and Confetti."
Julie showed a reluctant expression but she had nothing else to do.
Although they could bake the cakes themselves, they couldn't make that many given the fact they were inviting the whole class.
A short 10 minutes latter, Alex and Julie walked together along the pathway.
With eerie award silence, Alex thought of multiple ways to strike up a conversation.
They walked as if they just had a lovers quarrel with both parties displeased.
"Wonderful weather huh." he suddenly muttered.
But immediately regretted it. "Wtf is wrong with me. Wonderful weather? Who the hell says that nowadays."
Julie replied with a slight nod and then minded her own business again.
This sutuayion was killing Alex in the inside.
Julie hammed a song when she felt it was too boring.
From time to time she hammed a song as if she didn't care Alex was there.
Alex suddenly recognized a song she hammed; "Is that 2002?"
"Yeah, you listen to Anne Marie too?"
"Yeah." Alex couldn't help but inwardly thank God. This was going to be a long awkward walk.
"For real!" Julie acted a little surprised.
They started chatting about their favorite Anne Marie songs.
And just some distance away, two sports cars were in pursuit.
The loud engines echoed through out the road.
The cars a head had no choice but to pull aside. All they could do was cuss the reckless young drivers.
"Such bastards!"
"Who raised those rats!"
"Do they think they own the road!"
"Wtf!"
The drivers of the vehicles nearly hit spat out cusses one after another.
But the two young reckless drivers didn't mind it at all. In fact they enjoyed it. Little smirks forming on their lips, they sped off.

One could only count seconds before their time of death from the way they drove.
Alex and Julie who were about to make a turn at a junction noticed the noise behind them.
The loud honking of cars and loud cusses caught their attention.
And just as they turned, they noticed the cause of the problem.
Two sports cars, one black another red, sped in their direction.
The loud noises their engines gave off could give one a heart attack.
But then everyone watches closely in anticipation when they saw a cargo truck try to cross the intersection.
At the rate at which these young fellows were driving, there was no avoiding an accident.
Alex and Julie who were at this junction could sense the eminent danger that was about to befall them if an accident happened in their current position.
"Crap!"Alec cussed as he quickly placed himself infront of Julie when he noticed the front black sports car change its course and headed right straight for them.
"Does that fool think he can dodge that truck through that narrow passage." he is going to kill someone for christ sake.
But their mouths were left hanging with the scene they witnessed.
Just as the black sports car was a meter away from Alex and Julie, it drifted smoothly drawing a fine black curve on the road.
At this point, Alex was braces for his death.
But just then, the rear bumper of the car only brushed passes his jeans.
Nothing as they had expected happened.
They didn't here the loud bang of an accident and neither did they see dead bodies on the ground.
It all happened in a flash,by the time they noticed, the black sports car was already on the other side of the truck.
The truck driver, who hit
The brakes when he saw the black sports car only a distance away from, was still in shock.
In a moment, the car was on his left side and in the next it was speeding off on his right.
"Wtf!"
But then he realized a red car approach his truck again.
Now that he pulled over at the junction, he completely sealed of the road. There was no escaping this time.
But then, the red car also drew familiar curve as it headed straight through an alley.
"What the fuck! Was that..." Alex wore a shocked expression when he saw the youth behind the red car's steering wheel.
"I think am seeing thing." Alex rubbed his eyes just to make sure.
Julie who was next to him wore a terrified expression as she was still frozen in fear.
After a brief short second the red sports car could be heard speeding off the other side of the road.
Alex held Julie's shoulders and shook her abut as looked into her eyes; "Hey are you okay?"
She subconsciously blinked twice when she was shook and came out of her daze.
To her, the world was on a stand still. Remembering how she almost died.
The first thing she saw when she came out of her daze was Alex looking right into her eyes.
Subconsciously, she hugged Alex in terror.
Alex reassured her everything was alright and they proceeded to where they were going.
After buying the necessary things, they left then in the care of the cashier since they couldn't carry them back home themselves.
Julie phoned her older brother Shone to come pick them up.
They played around the arcade and Alex won her a stuffed elephant.
Ring ring!
The phone in Julie's back pocket rang.
Picking it up, she answered;"Yes."
"I'm right outside. Come on down okay." Shone said.
"Okay. Well be there." and with that she hang up the phone.
They proceeded to the mall and picked up the cart they had left there earlier. The attendant was quite nice.
They proceeded out side and loaded the items into the van shine arrived in before returning the cart.
" So... You say you're name's Alex?" Shone asked as they were on their way back.
"Yep."
This whole situation was rather awkward.
With shines eyes pinning him through the driver's mirror.
He couldn't afford looking in them.
They gave off a cold and deep stare.
Giving others a feeling he was an wise old man.
But they would immediately doubt that given he looked rather young.
He was only around his twenties.

Sufficiently Advanced
A Novella about magic vs aliens vs science. It's a raucous, campy sci-fi read involving humans gaining magic, a possibly pizza-hating alien empire, the decapitation of the US Federal Government, eldritch abominations, lesbian space witches and some medium-hard science.I wouldn't say it's not serious, but I wouldn't say it's serious. Eh, it's not serious. Wait... it's getting serious.

The Designated: Out of Control
It happened quicker than anyone would have imagined. Multiple hurricanes were one thing. People had dealt with that in the past. But, like kids playing dominoes, one thing crashed into another. Areas affected by hurricanes needed resources all along the Gulf and East Coasts drew rescuers and resources away from other parts of the country. When wildfires lit up the Pacific coast and mid-west, those areas were already understaffed. Driven by hurricanes in the Pacific basin, uncontrolled wildfires burned through towns, destroying everything in their paths. Across the Pacific, Asia didn't escape. From the Philippines, across China, into Indochina, and Bangladesh and India. Typhoons and cyclones pounded the coasts and far inland. Widespread flooding forced millions from their homes and across international borders. Mexico was hit hard and thousands died in mudslides as Katia slammed into their East Coast. The refugees fled north and west. Rumours started that hundreds of thousands were headed for the US border. Instead of running out of steam in the southern US, several hurricanes tore up the eastern seaboard, devastating cities and renewing their strength before veering east across the Atlantic. Maria and Ophelia veered east and slammed into Europe, reaching as far as the Netherlands and Russia before finally dissipating. After that, too many weather stations were offline to provide any form of co-ordinated information or warnings. Wildfires in Portugal burned ahead of the storms, fanned by hurricane winds. They sparked wildfires leapfrogging across Europe, beyond any one country's ability to cope. Already uneasy from multiple terrorist attacks over the summer, anti-refugee groups seized the opportunity to stage protests across Europe. Some turned violent as they clashed with police forces. Several governments declared martial law to quell the rioting and enforce evacuations along the path of the storms. Rumour and speculation overwhelmed facts. Unrest spilled over into widespread violence. Then sickness broke out in the displaced populations. Within a matter of a dozen weeks, tens of millions died. In the coming winter months hundreds more would follow. The Designated Project was activated.
