It was hard to believe that the kitchen used to be pink.

On each cabinet door was a thick, greasy coating of oil that had to be at least a millimeter thick. The murky, slimy brown radiated a horrible smell, so sickly solid that the air seemed to drop to the ground. Across the countertops were a sea of pots and pans, all drenched with some form of soup, grease, or cheese, dating back to months or weeks ago.

She wanted to walk across the kitchen, but faced a mountainous range of garbage bags, overflowing with rotten banana peels, used napkins, and half-opened ramen bowls with noodles still sticking to the bottom.

A long day stood ahead.

The young adult slowly looked around, calculating where she could possibly start the quest of scrubbing. The bottle of bleach and the four different sponges in her hands suddenly seemed much heavier than before.

No, now wasn’t the time.

She already won her battle with depression. She’d dedicated enough months to therapy, medication, and self-care, working hard to seize control over her mind again.
