《Call Of Death》Chapter 30 : Who Is Red?

Detective Lee stared at the two words flashed on the screen of his phone. He was expecting another riddle but instead it's just a two word sentence that was sent to him. When Officer Chad saw that his partner was looking at his phone, he already assumed it's the texter from last time. He walked towards Cameron's direction and stood in front of him.
"Senior, what's that? Another riddle?" He asked.
Cameron shook his head. "No."
"What?"
"It's not a riddle, Chad." Detective Lee repeated.
"Hmm? Then what?" Devius asked in confusion then Detective Lee turned his phone to him.
"Here."
"What is that?"
"Read it." Detective Lee commanded.
Officer Chad took the phone from Cameron's hand and looked at it. "I'm Red." He read the message.
He also gave the same expression as Detective Lee. He looked at the phone then to his partner again. Then he tilted his head as if he's trying to think and figure out what the text means.
"There's only two word here, it says I'm Red." He said in confusion.
Cameron nodded. "Yeah."
"But who is Red?" He asked.
Detective Lee shrugged his shoulder. "I have no idea. It's the same guy who kept sending me riddles yesterday." He voiced out.
"Then, do you think Red is a name or a was it the color, senior?" Devius asked.
Detective Lee shrugged his shoulder. "I have no idea."
Devius went silent and thought for a while because the word Red is somehow familiar to him. It's as if he heard it before. Then Officer Chad's expression changed from confusion into something like surprised or shocked. He came running to Officer Bruce Kish.
"Hey, Kish, what's the caller's name again?" He asked.
"Sir?" The officer asked in confusion.
Devius rolled his eyes and said, "The one who reported about the corpse. What he's name again?" He made it clearer.
"Oh. He's name is Red, sir. He didn't say it directly but hinted us that we'll find his name here and the only word we found around the perimeter is Red." Officer Kish politely answered.
Devius felt a different kind of feeling. He felt worried, confused and everything. He stared at the phone then turned to the officer again.
"Did you managed to save the number of that caller?" He eagerly asked.
The officer nodded. "The operator must have saved it, sir."
"Good, send it to me ASAP!" He commanded.
He took a deep breath then went to Detective Lee again, Officer Chad handed the phone to him while saying, "I think the one who called the police about the murder in this place is the same person who has been sending you those riddles, senior."
Before Detective Lee could say anything, his phone vibrated on his hand. He and Officer Chad looked at each other for a while before both turning to check the phone and there, another message from the same number who introduced himself as Red. Cameron cleared his throat before clicking the button for them to read it. It was another riddle or more like a short poem.

"The one who lives will be in misery, the one who died can be called lucky. When you have forgotten the past, it doesn't mean that the happiness will last. I have already given the clue, finding the whole truth relies on you." They read at the same time.
"What does this guy mean?" Officer Chad asked, furrowing his brows.
Cameron shook his head. "I don't know either but I have a feeling that he knows something about the case we've been investigating or maybe more than that." He stated as he slide his phone back to his pocket.
"Do you think he knows who the killer is?" Devius looked at Detective Lee seriously.
Cameron didn't give him an answer even if he also thinks that there is something more behind the mysterious texter. He knows there must be something. It's just one of the two things in his mind. First is, he knows the killer and the second was, he is the murderer himself.
"Senior?"
"Let's discuss everything later, we have to go back to the headquarters and investigate more about the recent victims." Detective Lee patted his shoulder and started walking towards the car.
While they were driving to the headquarters. Officer Devius Chad couldn't stop thinking about the riddle that was sent to Detective Lee. Every words from it just kept playing inside his mind. But the last words has the greatest impact in him. He has a feeling that it wasn't just a riddle, something more is hiding behind those poetic words.
"Senior, what do you think does he meant by he left the clue and finding the truth relies on us?" He turned to Detective Lee.
"I still have no idea, Chad." He responded.
"Then, we have to figure out what he meant by clue. What clue is he talking about? If he is the one who reported the crime in that area and he really is the one who left the word Red, there's a possibility that his name is the clue." Devius said in a long litany.
"We can't just create a conclusion because of that. Who knows? Maybe there's something more than just the word Red." Detective Lee added.
When they reach the station, they were immediately called to the Chief's office. A meeting was held and they are all sitting around the table as Chief Simon gave them some new information about the case. Pictures of all the victims were pasted on the glass board with red arrows on it, stating the timeline. Under the pictures were the names, age, occupation and other important details about the victims.
"As you all know, another victim was killed last night and it is possible that it was done by the same person from the prior killings." Chief Simon started as she pointed to the board. "The last victim is Lee Jin Hong also know as James Lee." She said, everyone turned to Detective Lee.

"Lee Jin what?" Detective Parker repeated, he misheard it.
Chief Simon shook her head. "LEE. JIN. HONG." She emphasized every word.
"He's korean too?" Kairo asked, looking at Cameron.
"Yeah. We found out that he and his family migrated in the US many eight years ago." Cameron explained.
"But, the name Lee Jin Hong, isn't it familiar to you, Cam?" Detective Parker asked again.
Detective thought for a while. "I don't know."
"You can discuss anything later, boys." Chief Simon interrupted and continued explaining. "So, we found out that there's nothing missing from this new victim because he didn't carry anything when he went outside but, here's another information." She pasted a picture of a crime scene.
"Did the culprit killed two people in one night?" Officer Chad asked in disbelief while looking at the newly pasted photo.
It's a man covered in blood and a knife was still seen stabbed straight into his heart. Everyone stared at it. Detective Lee and Detective Parker just sat there silently, waiting for Chief Simon to speak again.
"No, Officer Chad." Sara answered.
"Then, how come there are two corpses found in two different location but related, Chief?" Asked Devius.
"This man here, Go Jong Hoon, was the stepfather of Lee Jin Hong, the new victim. He died yesterday and the suspect for his murder was his stepson, Lee Jin Hong, himself. His fingerprints and DNA were found at the crime scene where the body of Go Jong Hoon was found this morning too." Chief Simon explained.
Officer Chad found everything confusing. "Chief, if James Lee killed his stepfather, he should have run away and found a place to hide instead of going to the park where he was found dead too." He stated.
"Maybe he panicked that's why he chose to stay at the park instead of running away to hide." Detective Parker said.
"That's not it. If he panicked, the more he should have hidden." Officer Chad argued.
"He's just a kid, Officer Chad." Kairo explained.
Detective Lee just remained silent, looking at the two men arguing about why the victim stayed at the park instead of hiding. Then he realized something by looking at the glass board. He stood up and walked towards the board as he examined it. He nodded his head and took the crime scene photo of Go Jong Hoon and pasting it not so far from Lee Jin Hong's picture.
"He doesn't want to run away, he also didn't panicked." He spoke, everyone kept quiet and turned to him.
"What do you mean, Detective Lee?" Detective Parker asked.
"James Lee, he killed his stepfather and he didn't plan to escape nor hide. He also didn't panicked, he went to the park to relax and maybe cry." He explained.
Detective Parker still looked confused. "I still don't get it, Cam."
"Here, look." Cameron pointed at the informations pasted on the glass board. "James Lee killed Go Jong Hoon and left the murder weapon with his finger prints on it because he wanted the police to know it was him who did it. He went to the park and sat on the swing to relax his mind and there, he must have met the killer caller and then he was killed." Detective Lee narrated it as if he was seeing the whole thing.
"But, what could be the reason of James Lee's crime? Why would he kill his stepfather?" Devius asked.
Detective Parker stood up and pasted another photo on the glass board. "By the look of all the bruises on James Lee's body, he was physically abused but there's also a possibility that it wasn't just physical." He explained.
"Parker is right. Lee Jin Hong must have felt enraged from everything. He's stepfather has been abusing him and he is also a bully victim at his school. Maybe all the anger and frustration got the better of him and the possibility that James and his stepfather fought that night, he must have killed him out of rage." Cameron narrated further.
"Wow, you're so smart, senior!" Devius said with thumbs up.
"Also, there's a chance that someone must have seen James Lee and the culprit there." Detective Lee added and wrote the word on the board and said, "Red could a witness or the killer himself."
"What?" Detective Parker groaned, balling his fists.
Chief Simon wrinkles her forehead. "Who is Red?" She asked.
"He's the one who called the police and reported about the murder, Chief. He also left Detective Lee a riddle with a hint on it." Officer Chad uttered.
"What? A riddle?" Chief Simon looked puzzled, then Devius waved his phone.
"I just got the number of the caller who reported the crime from the police who responded on the area and it's the same as the number who kept texting you riddles, senior." He stood up and showed Detective Lee the number.
They looked at it in confusion. Nobody has any idea how the person got Detective Lee's number but one of them felt nervous and worried upon seeing the familiar number on Officer Chad's screen.
"He is crazy." One of them thought.

This is a labor of love, dedicated to my absolute obsession with the LITRPG genre that has held me in its grasp for over 3 years. There will be dark situations that perhaps only adults should read including: slavery, violence and the results of war. There will be no harems, little profanity, but possibly some triggers for people who don’t like torture, violence, and other dark stuff.
