《The Final Light》Chapter 24: The slow end for light

As I yelled the order the members of the team that weer in front started to move out the main entrance of the building heading into the wide street, when it finally came to where it would be me and Beth following directly behind me although she is acting more skittish which may be right for the current events that will be unfolding but she is being more grippy than skittish I should say, I don’t know the reason but it is making me unnerved.
When we reached the more wider open space of outside the building it was chaos, I don’t know how we did not hear the sound of gun fire from inside it surprised me when it all rushed into my ears, when it do so it was deafening as other sound were no longer heard but gunfire and rattling of empty cases hitting the ground, as all of that was happening the sight of it all was something of a dream to others… for me an all too familiar sight that plagued me, one after another dropping down to the ground after having a hole the size of a ping pong ball littering there body, the lucky few having found cover in time before having the same fate returning fire back, polls of blood flowing like a stream to the gutters.
When I reached cover miraculously I tried to spot other targets that were surprising us when I found one taking up a aiming stance ready to fire, I brought my gun up to the ready position which is centre mass of the body, I peeked out of cover and brought the scope to my eye and aimed at him, I tapped on the trigger periodically to shoot one round at a time, when I saw his body drop after 4-5 rounds being shot at him, I went back down to cover myself again and looked for another target and repeat. eventually Kimber found his way to where I was, I wanted to ask how much have suffered in losses but at the same time not wanting to know. When I was about peek up and shoot at another person “Richard!” Kimber yelled trying to get my attention which worked, I looked toward him realizing he had a set of dog tags on him, I changed my posture to receive them and received them having them dropped in my hands I looked for the name and looked at it.

Sgt, Winters, well this is unfortunate a lot of deaths you see are not seen in front of you like a lot of movies sometimes it just happens when you are not looking or a different place a death can happen, that is too common and I hate it. I open a chest pocket on my vest and place the dog tag in there for safe keeping, I look at Kimber he is upset with had happened I am to but we need to move out of this kill zone that is set up, it is not a zone that we can escape from as we pinned so we have to hold and wait for the others to get here from Jacksons group which is anyone guess how long it is going to take them to get here and un-fuck our fuck up.
I go back to what I was doing earlier which consisted of spot, peek, shoot and repeat, after a while doing this is was going to obvious what I was doing so the enemy would get the pattern soon and counter it, while going through how many more times I could continue to do this while trying to take a knee to shoot someone I got a sharp pain from my Right calf, so I returned back to cover to check it out, only to find that I was shot in my lower leg the only reason I was not feeling the pain was because of adrenaline but it would stop soon so I need to treat it now rather than later.
I grab a trauma kit and wrap it around the lower half of my knee or patella if you want to scientific and tighten it hopefully to stop the bleeding then I realized I applied it to the wrong part of the body moved it to the upper thigh near but not close to the crotch, I pulled out bandages next and applied it to the wound to help keep bleeding to a minimum and to not expose it for too long.
After I thought is good job I Yelled “Kimber! I need help I am hit” even though he was a few meters away from me with all of this gunfire it would be hard to have him hear me if I talked normally. I looked behind him to see me have to change the position of my leg so it would be shot again, he hurried his way over to me to look at the injurie, he started to fix some mistakes I had made while patching myself up “How the hell did you get shot?!” he yelled for me to hear “I don’t know, that is the one thing that is confuse to me though!” I responded back yelling “it is something we are going to have to talk about latter but for right now do you where are the rest of team is!”

He stood still for a good second to think “Injured or dead all over the place but some are still fighting” he then continued to shoot at enemies. dead, injured and few are still fighting that is good news I was just continuously thinking that most of the team was dead but that is some news that is good to hear. When I went to spot a person to shoot the deafening silence hit me, what was going on why did gunfire stop.
I look around see no enemies in sight which is good but I don’t feel that this is good something is happening at this moment somewhere else. I place my hand on the piece of cover I was using which was almost destroyed due to the amount of fire it received, I stood leaning on the cover, Kimber swung my arm over the back of his neck and to other side of his shoulder almost sending me falling to face plant as it was the hand that I was using for balance, I promptly retracted my arm as the injury was not bad to the point I could not walk luckily.
I slowly make my way to the centre of the street in which I was followed by both of the people that were with me, Beth who I had forgotten was even with me as her presence was gone and Kimber. The scene that was in front of me was like my first deployment but with out the spreading of organs and limbs but just bodies and blood with cries of help heard from some areas as some were injured and wanting help with the pain that was plaguing them, some other soldiers who were fine headed to those spots and helped out where they could but if there no hope even for a medical unit with the technology we had were put out of their misery.
With this down time, I had started to collect dog tags from the fallen to set home each one I collected I removed from the necklace and placed in my chest pockets, hours maybe passed I just continued to collect until I got the final one “Kimber how long was I?” I asked “10 minutes” I stood back up with some difficulties and pain, I like to imagine that I was star relaxing and being a star but I was standing in a field of dead and running streams of blood and there I am in the middle of it all.
I walk away to sit down and when I had found a solid and comfortable place I sat. “Team assemble” I said in weak voice but loud enough to be heard, few seconds passed with everyone that was left injured or not,1…4….6….9….15…15, Kimber and I add up to 17 “well we are unlucky ones I guess who have to remember this day and the last of team” I say in a defeated tone, “Sir, what do we do now?” one of them ask.
“Well, we have quite the walk don’t we? So, let’s get moving shall we” a collective nod ran through everyone to the point.
“Where are you off to walk to UTC?”
