《Wang Zen: Curse of Silver Eyes》V2 Chapter 39: Night Time Espionage

It was dark in the City Lord’s library, except for one corner with a small orange flame. Jun Nee was sitting down, absorbed in a book, flipping through it ever so often. She heard a noise, an unfamiliar voice and walk pattern walk into the library. Twisting the lever on the lamp she turned it off.
Jun Nee could hear the voice swearing in a whisper. Then a light came on, that washed the library in a yellow glow. Jun Nee peeked out to see who it was and saw Choi Jingyi, holding her hand up. Above her palm was a yellow flame, quivering unsteadily.
Jun Nee was very disapproving. Why would she use a fire technique, in the middle of a library?
“Is there anyone there?” she said softly in the quiet library.
Jun Nee kept quiet. After a moment, she could hear Choi Jingyi shuffling through the books in the library. Jun Nee peeked out, careful not to be spotted as she did so. She saw Choi Jingyi take a book under her arm, look around and then snuff the flame in her hand. Jun Nee was immediately plunged into darkness. She stayed as still as possible, before she heard Choi Jingyi shuffling off.
She slowly crept out of the library. Seeing Choi Jingyi’s silhouette, illuminated by the moonlight. Being as quiet as possible, she followed her. She watched as she walked down the hallways, checking on rooms. Jun Nee found it all very suspicious. Why was she snooping around so late at night?
“Hey.”
Jun Nee nearly jumped at the sound. The surprised look on her face turned to one of anger as she saw Zen, waving at her.
“What you doing?”
“Zen, you’re not funny!” She rolled her eyes.
Zen’s face twisted in confusion. “I wasn’t trying to be funny. Why are you whispering?”

“I know, look.” She said, gesturing to an open door.
Choi Jingyi walked out.
“What is she doing so late?”
“Snooping,” Jun Nee said. “I don’t know why.”
“I knew she could be no good,” Zen said.
“Let’s see what she is doing.” Jun Nee said.
They followed her as she made her way up the stairs and stopped in front of the City Lord’s office.
“So that’s her plan,” Zen said. “She wants information on the City Lord, on my Mom.”
“We should continue to observe her,” Jun Nee said. “See what…”
“No, I’m stopping her now!” he said, rushing out.
“Hey!” Zen said running towards her.
Choi Jingyi yelped, seeing him coming at her.
Thrusting her fist out, she sent out a fireball at him. He ducked to the side, the heat singed the ends of his hair. He spun around and delivered a kick to her chest. She cried in surprise as she hit the ground with her butt. She threw out multiple fireballs at him.
Zen tried to dodge but it was difficult at such close range. He raised his arms to try and fend the fireballs but some of them exploded on him.
“Zen!” Jun Nee said, activated her Fleet Foot Ki Technique, speeding forward. She stepped in front of Zen.
“Jun Nee, no!” Zen said as she saw her standing between him and the fireballs. She gritted her teeth through the fire and grabbed Choi Jingyi’s hands.
“Stop!” Jun Nee said angrily.
Choi Jingyi kicked her in the gut, sending her sprawling back on the ground. She shot to her feet, a fire burning in her hand. “Burn…!”
She was about to throw a stream of fire at her until Zen grabbed her wrist midway. A killing intent grew from him as he glared at her wide eyes.
“You won’t hurt her!” he said.
“Wang Zen?” she said, eyes wide with surprise.
The room was flooded with light when the mansion guards came upon them armed with spears and weapons.
Tiang-Ji Ling stepped out of the crowd. Glaring at her son, she said, “What the hell is going on here?”

NOVA INTERIT.US
It's 2063, and the town along with much of the nation are in disarray. The decay started years before the Great Event. Our town still had hope thanks to the five families, who'd created a blockchain based water distribution system for the locals, a valuable secret hidden from the Global Water Commission and their network of mercenaries. Earlier in the mid-2040's, right after the state secessions of Idaho, Montana, and Texas, the Global Council of Water Commissioners made their deals and moved into towns throughout the country. They called it "the integration." The Commission and their contractors integrated with municipal water departments, using their organized network to invade like parasites on local services. It all coincided with the 29th Amendment to the United States Constitution, later referred to as the Regional Trident Plan. Nova is a story about survival, power structures, the turning of relationships, and the networking between people and the systems to which they belong. It’s about A.I. blockchain possibility, and its potential for human betterment versus our detriment. It’s about the question of whether or not we need to be saved from ourselves, and by who or what? The Great Event at the end of the first chapter might just be what actually saves us. The epilogue will take place in 2517. This scene is fully sketched and the full arc of the novel is set. I expect to finish Nova Interitus by summer of 2023. This is realist hard-sci-fi dystopian fiction. I hope you find Nova to be a challenging and consuming story. This is not something I planned to write. It all came to me in a dream and I haven't been able to stop writing it. This Royal Road posting is basically a beta test with chapters and drafts to get some feedback and see if there's any readership for this narrative. For the full experience read Nova on Substack. I will be narrating a podcast version later this year there. https://novainteritus.substack.com/
