《My Superhero Fantasy》White Bastard Part6: Afterward

“Uhhhhhh!” White Bastard grasped the rope and got down on one knee. His right hand on the hilt was shaking. He stopped as he drew out his katana and cut down the string by himself. He lifted his mask up to his nose dorsum to keep breathing. His eyes moved around erratically and, in the end, set on the dart. He held the dart and plucked as he screamed out. He threw it down to the ground.
Oriental Blue finally got up with the two daggers in his hands and the rope tied at the forearms that he could freely control the length of the string. “I can’t believe it’s you,” John said with calm anger in his voice. “Hooooo hmmm.” Cinkarry only answered with groaning and panting. “Let’s finish this.” John declared and charged. Although Cinkarry was now down with a knee, he could still throw shurikens in the way that no others ever could. Before John could make his second step, shurikens were rained at him like dogs and cats. He stopped the first and the second shurikens, but as a shuriken stabbed on the left leg, another stuck on the shoulder, another hit down the dagger. More and more shurikens stood on him; he stepped back; each shuriken made him step a half step back. John’s feet finally reached the edge of the van, but that was it. Cinkarry ran out of shurikens.
“Uhhhhhhhh!” with the last roar, John charged. He pounced to Cinkarry with his bloody body. His fist hit right at Cinkarry’s face and turned his side to him, but Cinkarry gripped John’s neck and smashed him on the floor. Then, John did the same to Cinkarry on the floor. He stood up again and captured Cinkarry from the back. John strangled Cinkarry and pressed his body to Cinkarry’s body as hard as possible. Those shurikens standing on John pierced into Cinkarry, too. Cinkarry hit John’s arms; he twisted his body; he stomped on the floor; he pulled out the shurikens and plugged the back again; he could hear John’s groaning and panting, he still couldn’t make a voice… Cinkarry was dying. With his final strength in this tattered body, Cinkarry attempted his last try.

He jumped down from the van. John still didn’t let him go. They fell on the ground side-by-side. “I’m sorry, Cinkarry. I am really sorry. I have to do it. I have to. They threatened me with my girlfriend’s life.” John murmured to Cinkarry’s ear. John could feel that Cinkarry was dying. He knew it was his last minute. Without a breath in his lungs, Cinkarry could let nothing but survival go into his brain. His hands sought the last straw. Cinkarry gripped up his last hope. He plucked John’s face to his neck and immediately inserted the dart he picked up into John’s temple. The two arms slackened. White Bastard crawled out and back into his van like an animal. His back was full of wounds that drew one and other bloody red flowers. His chest was leaking out blood, like a stream or a waterfall. He finally got back to the driver’s seat and drove away before the police arrived.
The sound of the doorbell woke him up. He quickly stood up from the red carpet he slept on yesterday. He had got to cover his costume first. HE immediately put on his yellow turtleneck sweater and black jacket, also a pair of jeans. He opened the door as he lifted his jeans. Who stood behind the door were the police and the sound of an old lady crying. He remembered what he did last night as he heard the cry of Mrs. Zhang. He let the police in and made up some shits, like feeding stray dogs. It was the same lie that he told two to three times. He had various lies for different situations. This one was an average one.
He was absolutely calm and could speak clearly.
The cry continued, “He’s my only grandson.”
“I, I drank some wine before I got there.”

The cry became softer but louder to Cinkarry, “He is only 19.” “Does he have any other relatives?”
“......I fed them with the dog food…that I put in my pocket,” Cinkarry answered with pauses. “Why are you looking at the floor, Mr. Wright?” The police interrogated.
“No, his parents left in flu, and my husband…..passed even before he was born,” the old lady cried out uncontrollably, “but I remember he told me he, he, he…….”
“Nuh, nuh, nothing, sir, ” Tear full-filled Cinkarry’s eyes, “just…….” “We understand it, Mr. Wright. We will find out who sent him to that bastard, and we will catch that bastard,” the policeman tapped on Wright’s shoulder and stood up. Cinkarry looked up and stared at the officer with slightly frowned brows and tears shining in his eyes.
“......he had a fiancee.” Mrs. Zhang fell to the ground. “Mrs!” the police that was recording her yelled out. It attracted not just the other police around the floor but also Wright. He contemplated at the old lady on the ground, closing his eyes but forcing himself to open again. He had no idea where did he do wrong. Alone, he closed the door and lay down on his sofa. Mrs. Zhang was a good woman, and his son was just threatened. Like he never killed any drug courier, he shouldn’t kill Oriental Blue. He shouldn’t kill John Zhang. He shouldn’t kill his friend’s grandson. He shouldn’t cause innocents to cry. He picked up a red metal box on his table. As he saw the notepaper sticking on the box, he dropped the box.
“Thank you for talking to my kid. His parents left him long ago, and I know I won’t last long, maybe I won’t even be able to see his wedding. My only wish is that you can look after him. He is always an introverted kid. He has no friends at school. Please take care of him. I know it is unfair for you, and I haven’t even requite you for staying with an old boring guy like me. Please, accept these crackers. They are the only things I can give.”
“A poor man and his poor grandma, they will be count on me. I took away the young man’s life. I took away the life of this 19 years-old kid with infinite possibilities. The picture that I just saw and her voice I just heard stick in my mind. If I saw his corpse last night, that will stick in, too. Does what happened to Zhangs happen to everyone who lost their kids and relatives from me?” my thought stopped there. All the old memories of shooting shurikens through others’ throats were recalled. I could imagine all of their grandmas or other relatives crying and fainting; I could imagine all of them eating with their family; I could imagine their relatives' life after they were gone. “Probably, I shouldn’t kill anyone in the first place?” I questioned myself, and I was willing to find out.
The moon rose, and White Bastard was out. This time, he brought blunt shurikens with him.

Moonblood
Five moons rise over Evanir, each in her own cycle, and each moon is also a god, one of five sisters. Many gods create spirit attendants and companions, brought forth fully-formed. Long ago, the moons worked together to create a lineage that are, instead, humans transformed by the mingling of blood. They intended them to be long-lived and to draw their strength directly from the light of the moon who chose each individual. The five sisters had different goals in mind – one wanted it to be a blessing for scholars and artists, to give them more time and fewer physical distractions; another wanted them to have an animal form, different for each, to keep them more in tune with nature so they could serve as guardians of the wilderness. There are drawbacks to their children having human lives and personalities before being chosen: not all share the goals of their divine mothers, and some choose to put their gifts to darker uses. Those carrying the blood of one woman, fleeing the corruption in search of a quiet life, take a different path. -=-=-=-=- Moonblood isn't so much a novel as a series of adventures of varying length. They involve a core group of people, which does grow over time. They take place in a fairly low-magic world, but despite that, our core cast are directly connected to the moons and have various abilities, including limited shapeshifting to a single individual animal form. As with all my work, unless gender, orientation, or other aspects of sexuality are explicitly stated, I suggest not making assumptions. Probably most significant, I think, is a major trans character who appears about 80K words in - no spoilers, just a note for those who care about that one way or the other.
