《A Suspicious Lack of Horses》World: 32 - Caught

Once Chris finished making his ability tool, Jo checked it over, giving it her grudging approval, before starting to teach him the concepts behind multi-core ability tools. In the meantime, Chris figured he should put her advice into practice and take a more active interest in his subordinates. "Chief! Is something up? Do you need me to fight someone?" Dyrdek exclaimed, sounding excited as Chris appeared next to him.

Chris shook his head. "No, I just wanted to ask you some questions since you've been connected to my world the longest. What do you think of all this? Of being connected to the world?" Chris asked, creating some chairs and taking a seat, gesturing for Dyrdek to do the same.

Dyrdek blinked, cocking his head. "What do I think?" He paused, considering the question. "Before, I was… weak. I had no hope, no future. All I could focus on was the next meal and staying safe, constantly struggling just to survive. I barely even had thoughts at the time, just… urges. Being connected to your world… becoming a part of the Immortal Tribe… It has given me purpose! A reason not just to simply exist, but to live! I feel only gratitude for what you've done for me, and I know many of the others feel the same."

"Huh…" Chris grunted, sitting back in his chair, not having expected such a… positive response. He'd known his subordinates weren't exactly unhappy in his world, but he hadn't expected them to be thankful. If you thought about it, he'd pretty much enslaved them for his own benefit. Sure, there were benefits for them as well, but none of them had wanted to be connected to his world beforehand. He'd needed to force or coerce them into being connected. Why would they be thankful for that? "Then… is there anything you'd want more of? Something to make things more… enjoyable?"

Dyrdek thought about it for a moment, before shrugging. "I wouldn't mind more things to fight. Maybe… a few more females?" He offered hesitantly.

Chris raised an eyebrow at him, smirking slightly. "Females, eh?" He paused. "Don't we have a bunch of those? All the kobolds, plus we got an entire goblin tribe as well…"

Dyrdek scowled. "The kobolds have no interest in anyone other than you and the females from the tribe are… primitive. There's no connection to be had! I want something like what you have with the stretchy female!"

Chris blinked. Dyrdek was interested in love? He definitely hadn't been expecting that. "Well… I suppose I can work on getting those goblins actually connected to the world and mutated, but if you want someone to love you're going to have to figure that one out yourself. I can help provide options, but love has to be a mutual thing."

Dyrdek nodded. "I know, Chief. I just need a chance."

Chris grinned, patting him on the shoulder. "I think I can swing that." He chuckled, before pausing. "Wait… the kobolds are still interested in me?!? I thought I took care of that!"

"You told them you weren't interested." Dyrdek pointed out. "That isn't a no, that's a challenge."

"For fucks sake." Chris groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Chris was playing the game, spending another boring day watching over Fernando. As he did, his mind drifted to what he'd learned from Jo. From the looks of it, his mutation would only take him so far, peak of high-tier max. Not only that, he couldn't figure out how to increase his ability energy either… Maybe if he could get his hands on one of the Elves potions he could do something with it? But he wasn't sure. As for his subordinates… Well, he hadn't tried giving them more ability energy yet, but he didn't think it'd work any better than it had for him. The only one he might be able to do something with was Jello. When she was ready to mutate again, he could take all the ability energy in the Immortal World and flood the area around her with it. Maybe… if he could find a way for the rest of his subordinates to mutate outside the Immortal World?

Chris was considering the possibilities, when suddenly his vision went dark. Chris frowned, sitting up and taking off his helmet, which had suddenly lost connection. Not only that, all the lights were off and the helmet was no longer charging. "If Anthony forgot to pay the damn electricity bill…" Chris grumbled, tossing the helmet to the side and getting to his feet, stalking out of the room. "Anyone ho-" Chris began to call, suddenly cutting off as several heavily armed men began shouting at him.

"GET ON THE GROUND AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!" The lead man shouted.

Chris paused, considering the situation for a moment, before shrugging. "Alright." The moment he did, someone immediately jumped on his back, taking his hands and pulling them back, putting handcuffs on him. Several men then dragged him to his feet and pulled him out of the house. He saw a stunned looking Carol being talked to by a man in a suit, while Anthony struggled against his own restraints.

"Boss!" He cried.

Chris clicked his tongue, sending the man into the Immortal World. "Annoying." Everyone froze, staring at the space that used to be occupied by the struggling man, before they all turned on Chris, everyone carrying a weapon raising it and pointing it at Chris. Chris blinked. "What? I thought you knew about that. It's why you're here, isn't it?" He couldn't think of any other reason for random men to suddenly show up and arrest him. Obviously someone had noticed something and now they were here for him. To be fair, he hadn't really been all that careful.

"DON'T MOVE!" One of the men yelled.

"Literally not moving." Chris retorted.

"BE QUIET!" The man yelled.

"I'd really rather not." Chris shrugged. "But, you know, if shooting me would make you feel better, go for it."

The man hesitated, not sure how to respond to that. "Just get- GET IN THE VAN!"

"THAT WAS THE PLAN!" Chris shouted back, rolling his eyes. Chris was shoved into the back of the van, several men jumping in after him, keeping their weapons on him. Once everyone was situated, the van drove off, taking Chris… somewhere. It was a long drive.

Carol watched with a numb expression as the men disappeared as suddenly as they'd appeared, leaving no trace that anything had actually happened beyond the absence of her husband and the strange man. She shuffled back into the house, no idea how to process the events that had just taken place, when suddenly a portal appeared in front of her and the strange man stepped out, followed by Anthony. "Ah, good, the power's back." Chris nodded. "I'm going to get back to the game. Anthony, behave." He warned him with a raised finger, before disappearing back into the extra room, leaving the two standing there, staring at each other incredulously.

In the van, Chris shifted uncomfortably in his seat, unable to find a comfortable position with his hands behind his back. Suddenly, one of his hands shifted, turning boneless for a second as it changed, slipping out of the cuffs. "Ah, much better." Chris sighed as he brought his hands out from behind his back to a chorus of clicks, getting comfortable before shifting his hand back into the handcuffs. He glanced at the nervous looking men, who seemed to be wondering if they should shoot him or not. "You guys need to chill. If I wanted to hurt you, I would have done it already." A statement that only seemed to make the men more nervous. Chris just shook his head, pulling a book from the Immortal World and starting to read. It'd been a while since he'd actually had downtime, so he had some catching up to do.

"Where did- you can't read in here!" One of the men exclaimed, going to grab his book.

"You can't stop me." Chris retorted, leaning away to keep the book out of reach, which unfortunately brought him closer to another man who grabbed his book away. Chris glared at the man for a moment, before making the book disappear and reappear in his hands again. "See? So stop it." He snapped, before returning to his reading.

"Drop the book, or else!" The first man growled, raising his weapon.

Chris rolled his eyes. "Dude, you aren't going to shoot me over a book. First of all, your superiors would be less than happy that you killed the strange person they've expended so many resources to capture over a book. Secondly, shooting me won't get you very far anyway, more of an annoyance than a threat. I'll just come back a second later and keep reading." The man hesitated, glancing at one of the other men, who shook his head slightly. The man's expression twisted in frustration as he lowered his weapon, sitting back in his seat as he glared daggers at Chris.

A little while later, Chris started to get hungry, so he shifted a hand out of the handcuffs again and began pulling wings out of the Immortal World, eating with one hand and reading with the other. Occasionally he'd add in a drink as well. He paused for a moment as he noticed the men staring at him in disbelief. "You guys want some?" He asked, making a plate of wings appear, holding it out for them.

"Are- are you Jesus?" One of the men asked, gulping nervously as he rubbed a 't' he had hanging on a chain around his neck.

Chris frowned, cocking his head as he searched through Anthony's memories for a 'Jesus'. Water to wine, food out of nowhere, raising the dead… "No, but I can see why you might get confused." Chris replied with a shrug. "We might have similar origins though…" Chris frowned slightly as he considered the idea of someone else from his world managing to come here and using their ability to impress the masses. He couldn't figure out why they'd start a cult though… or insist that they'd need to die. But then again, people did weird things all the time, so who knows? Though… two thousand years ago would be from before abilities were actually a thing on Azza… maybe there were other worlds with abilities though. Scratch that, there were definitely other worlds with abilities. Why would there not be?

The man blinked. "You- you're from heaven?"

Chris frowned. "No, Azza. Specifically the City."

"You're from 'The Maze'?!?" One of the other men exclaimed incredulously. "Like, the game?!?"

"Essentially, yeah." Chris shrugged. "Not literally the game, obviously, just a world a lot like it. It's called Azza, we have a City, a Maze, Doppelgangers, Elves, abilities, all that crap."

"That's impossible!" The man retorted.

Chris blinked at him. "No it's not. It's where I'm from. I mean, you've been watching me use my ability, haven't you? Why do you think I have one?"

The man blinked back. "I- you-"

"Jackson, quiet!" Another man scolded him. "Save it for the interrogation team. They'll find out who, or what, this man is."

Chris glanced at him, raising an eyebrow and frowning slightly. "Interrogation team? Is that really necessary? If you guys want to know anything, I'll just tell you. Honestly, we probably could have gotten through all this with a phone call."

The man ignored him. "No one else talk to him! We aren't entertaining this nonsense any more!" Chris frowned at him for a moment longer, before shrugging and getting back to his book.

A long, quiet ride later, the van finally came to a stop, and the men dragged Chris out. They were in a cement structure, which Chris only got a short glimpse of before he was pushed through a pair of doors and dragged down several sets of hallways, before getting shoved into a small room with a metal table and chairs, and a large mirror on one wall. The men handcuffed him to the table, before leaving him alone in the room. Chris waited for a few minutes, before sighing and taking out his book again. What was up with these people and ignoring him? You'd think the strange magic man would warrant at least some level of attention.

Thankfully they didn't make him wait too long. Not long after he began to read, the door opened and a friendly looking woman entered, pausing for a moment as she saw the book, before dismissing it as she sat down across from Chris. "My name is Agent Christine Harris, but you can just call me Christine." The woman introduced herself with a smile.

"I'm Chris." Chris replied simply as he sent the book away.

Christine hesitated at the blatant display of Chris's ability, her smile dropping slightly before coming back even stronger. "It's nice to meet you, Chris!" She responded in a tone of forced excitement. "Is that your full name?" She asked in a curious tone.

"My full name is Christopher Joseph Vincent." Chris answered in a bored tone, realizing she was just going to be digging for information for a bit.

Christine nodded. "And may I ask how old you are?"

"Eighteen." Chris sighed.

Christine blinked. "So young? I would have assumed you were at least twenty-four."

"Nope, just eighteen. At least, assuming the years I use are the same as the years you use… three hundred and sixty-five days? Twenty-four hours in a day? Sixty minutes? Sixty seconds? A second is one, two, three, four seconds?" Chris confirmed.

Christine nodded a bit stiffly. "Y-yes, that seems to be the same as we use."

Chris nodded. "Good." He paused as he realized he already knew that from his dealings with Anthony and the game anyway. Ah well, it was good to make sure.

"What- ah, where were you born?" Christine asked next.

"Level forty-two, Healthsmart Hospital." Chris answered. "In the City. On Azza." He added absently.

"Azza, as in 'The Maze' Azza?" Christine asked skeptically.

"Yup. That's where I'm from. The real one, not the game one." Chris confirmed.

Christine blinked. "I- I see. Then… forgive me if I overstep, but… why would you come here?"

Chris shrugged. "Honestly, it was an accident. I was just trying to partition off my world, and I ended up connecting here. If it weren't for the fact that 'The Maze' resembles Azza so much, I probably would have left already. As it is, I'm just here to figure out what happened in the game, so I can figure out what might happen on Azza."

"That's it? You've come to our world to play a game?!?" Christine asked incredulously.

"It's a very realistic game." Chris shrugged.

"But-" Christine began, before pausing as she seemed to listen to something. "You said you would have left. Does this mean you can travel back and forth between both worlds?"

"That would be correct, yes." Chris nodded.

"Can you bring others with you?" Christine continued.

"Yup." Chris nodded again.

"Have you brought anyone else to our world?" Christine asked.

"No. Just me so far. No plans for anyone else either." Chris paused. "Actually, no, there is a potential plan to send those with weak abilities here, to give them a safe place to live, but that would be conditional on the agreement of the people in charge over here. No sense in sending people here just to get into a war, right?"

"That- no, yes, war- war would be bad." Christine agreed. She then pulled out a packet, taking out a few pictures and pushing them over to Chris. "The reason we have brought you here is due to a video we received, which as you can see, shows the process of you being shot, disappearing, reappearing in a different form, and then changing back to normal. We also received the testimony of a young man who claims you are what those who play 'The Maze' call a 'Doppelganger'. What do you say to this?"

"Hm… I wouldn't describe myself as a Doppelganger. At least, not in the strictest sense. I was born human. However, my ability involves owning and controlling a world, which does allow me to mutate like a Doppelganger, hence the other form." Chris paused as he realized something. Did the Immortal World have the ability to mutate people because his father was a Doppelganger? That somehow, instead of getting the ability to mutate himself, it'd been incorporated into his ability instead? "Huh… maybe I'm like half Doppelganger?" He offered tentatively. "But whatever the case, I'm not the enemy of humanity in any way, which is what I assume you're actually worried about. Or at least, that's what you should be worried about."

Christine shook her head. "You know we can't just take your word on something like that. You would say that no matter what the situation."

"True." Chris shrugged. It didn't particularly matter anyways. The worst these people could do was keep him from playing the game, which would be annoying, but after talking to Jo, he'd downgraded the importance of figuring out what had happened quite a bit. He still thought it'd be a good idea to find out what had happened, but he wasn't going to freak out if he couldn't.

"Do you know of anyone else who can travel between our worlds?" Christine continued.

Chris shook his head. "No, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone else could. Lot's of teleportation abilities out there, and at least some of them have to be strong enough to get here, right?"

"It would seem that the fact that you are here would confirm that." Christine pointed out.

Chris nodded. "Yeah, pretty much. Though, you'd think if others were coming, they'd leave a bit more evidence, right?"

Christine cocked her head. "Why would you say that? You yourself left very little evidence that you were here. A single testimony and a blurry video. Why would the other Travelers be different?"

Chris paused. "Honestly? I'm weird. To me, this world is just another place. Somewhere to be, but not much more. To others though… I don't know, maybe they'd want people? Or land? Food? There are lots of things another world can provide."

"Why would anyone steal people?" Christine asked.

Chris considered the question for a bit. "Genetics? Abilities are determined by your genetics, so if you bring in new people with new genetics, you'd get new abilities."

Christine frowned. "Why would anyone go out of their way to do that?"

Chris shrugged. "No idea. I wouldn't do it, cause it seems unnecessary. There are already plenty of abilities on Azza, and just by natural genetic drift, new ones keep popping up. Hell, look at mine! No one has had an ability like mine before, at least not that I'm aware of. Though… My situation is weird."

Christine blinked at him, before letting out a sigh. "Thank you. I believe those are all the questions I have for you at the moment." The door opened and a few armed men stepped through. "These men will take you to a more comfortable room. Please wait there and let us know if you need anything."
