《Rebirth Of Civilization》Chapter 69 - Calculated Generosity

Andrew headed out of the cabin into the bright morning sunlight, his thoughts abuzz with mostly forgotten nightmares. He was the leader of this camp, and he had to do something about the distrust between their two camps. He had to make himself known to the people of New Eden, get ahead of whatever George, or Mark, or Steven had to say about him. He needed to create a sense of community and trust with the regular people of New Eden, so that they would consider his opinion when it conflicted with George's. He couldn't afford to indulge himself with infrastructure projects when public opinion was so volatile.
His eyes were instantly drawn to the nearby forge test. The wooden frame melded into the foundation below it, the subtle wood grain and board-creases were the only indication of their original material. A stony grey box stood where the wooden foundation was built the night before, each circle long dimmed. Andrew headed in that direction and was surprised to see Jason walk around from the opposite side, evidently examining the previous night's work, scarcely an hour past dawn.
"Jason! Mornin!" Andrew called out.
"Andrew, hey there! I was just checkin on our progress. This is some nice stuff. Solid all the way through, far as I can tell. We should be able to do the same thing for the roof and chimmney right? I've already got a couple ideas of how to frame it." Jason said, eyes not leaving the stone box as he walked around towards Andrew.
"Yeah, I mean , you'd probably know better than I would. I'll leave the framing up to you, you know what it's for after all. I think I'll be busy with a couple things in New Eden today. " Andrew said, reaching to his belt and pulling his chisel out. "Here, just pump some mana into it and you should be able to cut whatever holes you think necessary for the crucible and bellows." Andrew tossed him the chisel.
Jason caught it with slight surprise, quickly masked. "Yeah alright, sounds good to me. I'll just, call you if I need somethin inscribed then?"
'Yeah, that'll work for me! Thanks Jason!" Andrew said, heading over to the nearby workstation and settling down on the anvil. He spent the better part of the next hour thinking and practicing Mana Projection. He created little knives, chisels, chains, and hatchets. The giants seemed to run on a different circadian rhythm. They tended to go to bed and wake up later than most of the humans, and it seemed like they were pushing themselves to match up as closely as they did with the human's schedule. Andrew intercepted Poeas before he had a chance to join the clearance crew.

"Po! Want to help me out with something today?"
Within twenty minutes Po and Andrew were headed out through the forest towards New Eden, dragging a wagon laden with supplies along behind them. They arrived to a camp full of activity. Most people rose with the dawn these days, and this camp was an exceptional example of that. They drew a number of stares as they arrived, but Andrew ignored them at first. Po and Andrew got to work unloading supplies from the wagon and laying them out in front of the stage, the pair of stocks still standing behind them. He set up a simple worktable on a pair of borrowed sawhorses, a mana forge, and an anvil. On the back of the wagon was a variety of crafting materials in various boxes. When they were finished Andrew turned to address the curious crowd.
"Ah, hey there everybody! I figured we haven't had a chance to get to know one another yet, so I'll be setting up shop here for the day. I'm a fairly advanced craftsman, as far as classes go. So, if there's anything you need help with, just let me know! I've got a good bit of material here, and I'd hate to make Po here drag it all home again, so don't hesitate to ask if there's somethin you need!" Andrew called out.
There were quite a few people in the street and Andrew was pleased to see that most of them seemed to be considering his offer. The lumberjacks of New Eden were close enough to Andrew's own clearing team to see the effects of their axes first hand. News of their enchanted equipement had obviously spread because soon after his announcement Andrew was inundated with an ever growing crowd of requests.
"Could I get a couple water barrels?" "Do you have magic to make our garden grow quicker?" "We're working on walls, you can turn those to stone or something right?" "Can I shoot one of those explosive bullets you've got?" "you should really just give one of everything over to Jack! He can make enough for everybody!" "Could you improve my axe?" "I hear you can make ice?"
Andrew tried to work through each request but the enthusiasm of the crowd was overwhelming. There were more people in this crowd than there were in the entire hobgoblin mining camp. Easily over thirty in the crowd ahead of him. Too many people were shouting for his attention and he was having trouble picking out who was shouting what.

"Quiet down!" Po rumbled out. "One at a time."
"Water barrels! You already have those right? Could you do the same with a waterproof box, or a well or something? We can make one of those for ya in a jiffy!" An older fellow shouted from the quieting crowd.
"I can do both, heck, I'll show you how to do it yourself! Bring me a box, doesn't matter if it's waterproof or not, I can take care of that too!" Andrew said, with feeling. This wasn't knowledge to be hoarded, and he would not let George determine the conditions of its dissemination.
The crowd roared its approval as the older man scooted off to find a box. Andrew called for the crowd to clear some space, then grabbed a length of wood and used it to start scratching an earth accumulation circle into the dirt in front of his workstation. He explained the function of each rune as he carved it, pointing out tricky areas where he had made mistakes in the past. The older man returned with two others, each carrying a simple wooden box. Andrew inspected the boxes, the thin gaps between their boards would leak water and interrupt an inscription, as Andrew predicted. He had them set the boxes down inside of the accumulation circle, then step back.
"Okay, this circle accumulates earth mana. It's the same circle we used for that big foundation behind us. If you give it enough mana, it'll start fillin in the gaps between the wood and sealing everything up nice and tight. I don't want the crates to get too heavy, so I'm only putting sixty points of mana into this circle. Don't step into it until the circle is done glowing, I honestly have no idea what'll happen to you if you do." Andrew said, stepping back and placing a palm against the circle, charging it with mana.
"Once those are done cookin, I'll show you another circle that'll create water out of mana. Soon as that's inscribed on there, you'll be all set." Andrew said, standing and dusting off his palms. The crowd was quiet and quite attentive now. "We have a little bit of time before that's done though, so I'll share a lil' trick that'll up its efficiency. Hopefully one of y'all will have a knack for it, cause it requires a specific skill."
Andrew turned and climbed up into the wagon, rooting through the supplies they brought with them. He pulled the small icebox out and set it on the ground below the wagon. Then he rolled one of their empty water barrels out and set it on it's side mouth suspended over the icebox. He pushed mana into the barrel and a steady stream of water accumulated and streamed out of the mouth into the icebox below.
"This is how those boxes'll work once I'm done with them, If you look close you can see there's three circles running in there. The one's you make yourselves might not work quite as well though, and I'll show you why." Andrew said, waiting for the icebox to fill with water before he pulled the barrel down from the wagon and placed it upright nearby. "That'll take a little bit to fill, but everyone's welcome to a cup soon as it's done. For now, check this out."
Andrew carefully picked the icebox up and powered the fire dispersal circle surrounding it. It glowed softly and the air around it grew the slightest bit warmer. Andrew stepped away from the box and motioned for the crowd to make some space. He got to work scratching a small fire dispersal circle into the dirt, addressing the crowd as he did so. "This circle is a little different, it'll pull fire mana out of whatever it's carved into. So far as I can tell, pulling the fire mana out of something also reduces it's temperature. That box there will be filled with ice within forty or so minutes, and it'll stay frozen as long as you keep it supplied with mana. I'll be using that ice to make our water boxes more efficient, but the fire dispersal circle can be used for all kinds of things. "
When Andrew was finished with the fire dispersal circle he circled back around the makeshift workbench. "Now then. We've got a good ten minutes till that icebox is done freezing. Do we have any questions?"

Contact Through Voided Lenses
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Edit: Fixed some inaccuracies in the synopsis. The void is a vast unexplored ocean filled with various wonders and dangers all waiting to be explored by those brave enough to travel and record. Many souls do find themselves brave enough to face the vast distances, the various risks to personal safety and do the hundreds of task required on a craft. However, at times the void itself can be boring with absolutely nothing to do but as time pass and more and better technology is reached, things got better. The various trips got faster, communications became faster than light and you can be home to see your loved ones after only months now. Through the various planets whether rocky or gaseous, the various stars whether small or giant, the various systems both eerily similar or completely alien. As part of an expeditionary scientific exploratory survey craft, one could see that the void offers no reprieve from all the discoveries and wonders. At times, it can feel empty and silent where no soul can hear you scream and at others it can be overwhelming with sudden phenomenon that can overwhelm the brightest of minds. The void itself is a truly fascinating ocean where one must chart the various islands or drown in its deadly tidal waves. But the question still remained no matter how you try to hide it in of itself… is there truly other intelligent life out there? Are we alone in this ocean? Those very questions still haunt the minds of those on the crafts themselves as they brace for every jump ready for the unknown and the known. Many would try to explain that yes there is other intelligent life out there whilst other still say no after 2 centuries of continuous flight out of the home system. Still, those are questions that bury deep in the minds of the crew and those at home as the voidcraft jumps to a system with a single yellow star orbited by 8 other planets with one crowning blue jewel being the 3rd closest with its 5 oceans and 7 continents, a planet called Dirt which is inhabited by a primitive species called Humanity. Hello, author here and this is my newest dive into writing particularly for the Writathon currently in progress being my first one. I hope you give me story a try but in case you still want more information on what you’re getting into, below are some pointers about the story itself. First Contact: CTVL is a story about a first contact scenario between an advanced alien civilization and a slightly more advanced modern day humanity on their planet called Dirt. Characters: The story will take place mainly on the perspective of the alien visitors themselves though there will be human POV characters who will show how the rest of humanity react through media and forums. Action: It won’t be an actual alien invasion but you have to see for yourself how well first contact went. Sci-Fi: I will be very forward here, I WILL bend the rules of physics in order to add in parts of the plot and there WILL be parts that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Theme: It will be a brooding story talking about the futility of pe… Just kidding, it’s mostly wholesome stuff to be honest here. Alien: The aliens themselves will… actually why should I tell you, you have to go and read it to find out what the aliens are though I will draw a few things here and there to aid in the process. Extra tidbit: If you are a grammar nazi or someone who really wants a realistic scifi story... this story is probably not for you at all. Anyways, that’s pretty much all I can say before I spoil something major of the plot itself, the story is slice of life so make sure that type of story is what you like because I am terrible with anything else as I found out, anyways, have a good time everyone and good luck to the other Writathon participants.
