Chapter 30
10 Years After – 30
Speaking with Goran
I could understand why Goran would say no.
A chicken was different from a dog or a cat. Chickens were noisy.
They would cry loudly every morning. It would also disturb the neighbors.
“What? But why?”
“No, of course, you can’t. And your mother would be furious…”
Serulis seemed like she couldn’t comprehend why he would say no.
Goran seemed like he couldn’t comprehend why she didn’t see this coming.
Just then, a sound came from behind Serulis.
“Cluck.”
It was clearly the voice of Lord Gerberga.
“Hm? What was that just now?”
“Wh-what noise?”
Serulis made a futile attempt to fake ignorance.
“Cluck.”
“Sh! Please be quiet.”
“Serulis. Is that…”
“W-w-w-w-what? I don’t know.”
Serlis was sweating now.
I suppose I could give her a helping hand.
“Goran. Can I have a word with you regarding Serulis’ request?”
“Huh? What?”
“Remember that I told you about what the Vampire Lords were doing?”
“You said they were gathering medals to open a gate between our dimensions.”
“Yes, and it seems like they’ve been moving again.”
“Tell me the details.”
And so I had Goran wait there and called Shia.
And Luchila as well.
“Cluck!”
Of course, Luchila was holding Gerberga.
Goran saw this and his jaw dropped.
“A chicke-”
“Goran! This is the God Fowl Lord Gerberga. In no way is he an ordinary chicken.”
“Oh, oh… I see. Sorry. Lord Gerberga, eh?”
I wanted to avoid having Luchila become angry at Goran.
That was close.
Goran was a lot like his daughter.
And so I introduced Goran to Shia and Luchila.
“This is Goran. The Grand Master of the guild and the lord of this house.”

“Goran Morton.”
“And this is Shia. She is the B Rank Adventurer who I partnered with to kill the Vampire Lord.”
“Oh, I’ve heard all about you. Thank you for your valuable information. As the representative of the guild, you have my thanks.”
“Oh, no. It is a great honor to meet you!”
Shia said nervously.
“And this is Luchila. He is protecting Lord Gerberga and brought him here.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“I’m Luchila. Nice to meet you.”
When that was done, Goran looked at me.
I hadn’t explained to him about Luchila and Gerberga yet.
And so he wanted me to hurry up and explain it to him.
“Goran. Luchila is from a tribe to the north… But they were destroyed when they were attacked by vampires”
“How terrible…”
And then I explained about Gerberga’s powers.
At first, he seemed very skeptical about a chicken having such powers.
However, I told him that I had witnessed it myself, and so he believed me.
Goran muttered.
“I see. So that is why Serulis asked me if she can keep a pet chicken.”
“Lord Gerberga is not a chicken.”
Luchila retaliated as usual.
“That’s right. Serulis, that was very rude to Lord Gerberga.”
“I’m sorry.”
Goran scolded her, and Serulis apologized.
“It’s fine.”
“Cluck-cluck!”
Luchila did not look fine, but Gerberga seemed to be in high spirits.
Or so I thought. It was hard to read a chicken’s expression.
Goran also bowed before Gerberga.
“To be honest, I too assumed you were just a chicken. I am sorry.”
“Cluck.”
Gerberga shook his head to the side.
He must be saying that he doesn’t mind.
And so I said to Goran,
“So, I have just heard from Shia that the Vampire High Lords are gathering others lords.”

“High Lords… Those can be dangerous.”
“Yes. And so Shia and I are planning to go and kill them.”
“Hmm. About that…”
Goran fell silent.
I knew what he was thinking.
He was thinking that Shia would only get in the way.
But he didn’t want to say it in front of her.
B Rank Adventurers was first-rate. But it was still dangerous to go up against a High Lord.
And so Goran’s misgivings were right.
However, Shia had a reason that forced her to hunt vampires.
“Shia is a professional vampire hunter. She has a duty to her tribe.”
“…I see.”
Goran said understandingly. He was often quick to understand.
“So, with all of that said, I have a request to make.”
“What?”
Goran thought a little and nodded.
“I see…Ru….Locke. I know what you want say.”
“Oh, you do?”
Though, his constant slips were making me nervous.
“You’re going to take Lord Gerberga with you to fight the Vampire High Lords, and you want me to support you!”
“No…”
“No!”
What I wanted to ask was that he protect Luchila and Gerberga.
I didn’t want Gerberga to get attacked while Shia and I left the capital.
I explained this to him.
“I see. But doesn’t Lord Gerberga have immense power?”
“Of course, he does. But it would be difficult to fight while protecting Gerberga from the vampires.”
Right then, Shia interjected.
“Besides, it is said that if a Vampire High Lord drinks the God Fowls blood, they will fill with curses instantly and be able to open the gate between dimensions.”
“What? Is that true?”
This was news to me. Important things like that should be said quickly.
I looked at Luchila with some annoyance.
“Huh? Is it really so?”
“Cluck!?”
But Luchila and Gerberga were just as surprised.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
