[ POV Change ]
[ Earth - Year 2011 ]
Jasmine K, a woman in her late forties, made frequent visits to the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Washington DC every day for the past year. Today was no different. As she drove in her crimson minivan on the road to the famous hospital, she couldn't help but think that maybe today would be the day she'd get to the hospital and see her son; Austin Kevin awake. But another part of her thought that finally, at long last, his heart would have stopped beating. She wiped a tear from her eye, shaking her head.
"My little boy is not a quitter," she mumbled to herself, her knuckles turning white from gripping the steering wheel. "He'll get through this."
Keeping her dear son in the hospital cost a fortune, but with help from various family members, and several family friends, she was able to pay for him to stay until he woke up. The doctors had told her several times to give up hope and to let them pull the plug together. Jasmine, her husband, and her eldest son Leroy were way too stubborn to listen to them. They never stopped believing that their youngest would get better.
Jasmine pulled into the parking lot and found her usual parking space that everyone in the city knew not to use. After months of coming to this place daily, it had become reserved for her and only her. She stepped out of her vehicle, slung her brown purse over her shoulder, and shut the door behind her. Making her way to the front doors, many people along the way stopped and stared at her, mumbling amongst themselves.
"She's back again."
"I feel sorry for her."
"I hope that kid is okay."
"You'd think she would have given up by this point."
Jasmine blocked out everybody as she pushed through those double doors and marched her way to the front desk, taking the clipboard without saying anything to the woman behind the desk and signing her name in. She placed the clipboard down and began walking to the elevator. She pressed the up arrow and in seconds the elevator arrived with no one on it. She stepped into the small square space and clicked on the sixth floor.
Jasmine was so sick and tired of the elevator music that played on one continuous loop. It was that same track that they had playing on the loudspeakers in the city centers. The first few weeks she enjoyed the music, but now she has a burning hatred for it. The elevator came to a halt on the sixth floor. The sliding door could not open fast enough. Jasmine was already squeezing herself through before it was actually open all the way.

She dashed down the hall, turned a corner, and kept walking until she reached the seventh door on the left. She barged in, startling the nurse that was in there who had been checking on her son. "Miss Kevin!" the nurse gasped. "I know you needed to see him but haven't you ever heard of knocking?"
Jasmine took no time to look at the nurse. She knelt by Austin's bedside, staring into the stone-hard face of her beloved son, Austin Kevin.
'Please wake up son.'

[ Celadon City ]
As Austin walked into Nurse Joy's office, he couldn't help but feel a sense of nervousness. He knew that the fate of his Charmeleon rested on the shoulders of the medical team and he was desperate for any help that could be provided. The office was small, but cozy, with a desk in the center and shelves filled with medical books and equipment lining the walls. Nurse Joy was sitting behind the desk, dressed in her traditional pink uniform, a warm smile on her face.
"Ash, thank you for coming," she said, as she stood up to greet him. "I'd like to introduce you to our neurologist and psychic."
Austin turned to see a middle-aged man dressed in a white lab coat, holding a stack of papers, and a woman in a pink and purple outfit with a psychic symbol.
"This is Dr. Smith, our neurologist," Nurse Joy said, gesturing to the man. "He's been working on Charmeleon's case and has some important information to share with you."
Dr. Smith gave a small nod and a smile in Austin's direction.
"And this is Psychic Jane, she's one of our best psychics and has been working with Charmeleon to try and reach it while it's in the coma," Nurse Joy continued.
Psychic Jane gave a smile and a small bow in Austin's direction.
Austin felt a sense of hope welling up inside him as he looked at the two specialists. He knew that they were his best chance of saving Charmeleon, and he was willing to do anything to help them.
"Please, take a seat," Nurse Joy said, gesturing to the chairs in front of her desk.
Austin sat down, Pikachu by his side, as the neurologist and psychic began to explain the situation in more detail.
Austin sat down, Pikachu by his side, as the neurologist and psychic began to explain the situation in more detail. Dr. Smith pulled out the CT scans of Charmeleon's brain and began to point out the areas of concern, "As you can see here, the hippocampus is highly active, indicating that Charmeleon is in a dream-like state," he said, while Psychic Jane talked about her attempts to reach out to Charmeleon through her psychic abilities. "I've been trying to reach Charmeleon through my psychic abilities, but it's like it's in a deep sleep and it's hard to reach it."

As they spoke, Austin listened attentively, trying to understand the technical jargon and medical terms. He could see the concern and determination in their eyes, and he knew that they were doing everything in their power to save Charmeleon.
"Is there anything that can be done to save it?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"There is," Dr. Smith said, "but it's a delicate process. We need to slow down the activity of the hippocampus, which will help Charmeleon regain consciousness. However, it's important to note that this is a long-term process and there's no guarantee of a full recovery."
Austin took a deep breath, brushing Pikachu's scalp with his hands as he processed the information. He could see the CT scans on the table, the images of Charmeleon's brain filled with lines and contours that he couldn't understand. But he could see the damage, the dark shadows that indicated the coma-like state that his Charmeleon was in.
"Is this safe?" he asked, unsure if he wanted to hear the answer.
"The procedure is safe, but it's not without risks," Dr. Smith replied. "But it's the best chance we have of saving Charmeleon."
Austin nodded, knowing that he had to do everything in his power to save his beloved Charmeleon. He could feel the tears welling up in his eyes as he thought about the journey they had shared, the battles they had fought together, and the memories they had made. He couldn't bear the thought of losing his companion and best friend.
That night, as the surgery room was prepped for the procedure, Austin found himself outside the room, waiting anxiously for any news. The ambiance was quiet, the only sound being the occasional footsteps of the medical staff. The environment was filled with the smell of antiseptics and the whirring of machines that monitored Charmeleon's vital signs. He could see the worry on the faces of the other trainers, who were also waiting for news about their own Pokémon.
Under the enchanting veil of night, Austin sat alone, lost in a whirlwind of thoughts. The stars above seemed to be whispering their secrets, casting a dreamlike glow on the world below. It was at this moment that Green, her presence a gentle beacon in the darkness, approached him. Without a word, she handed Austin a steaming cup of coffee, its enticing aroma mingling with the delicate scent of her perfume. They sat together, the silence between them as tender as the brush of a lover's fingertips.
The warmth of the liquid caressed Austin's soul as he sipped, his eyes locked on the heavens above. Green's voice was soft and tender, the soothing balm he needed. "Everything is going to be alright."
Taking a long, comforting gulp of his coffee, the stars above reflecting in his eyes, Austin felt a warmth that extended far beyond the cup in his hands. Green hesitated, her gaze filled with concern, and asked, "Ash, can you tell me what you saw that night?"
Sighing, Austin replied, "Are you sure you want to hear it? Since the information isn't going to get you any money on the black market."
"Hey, money isn't everything I think about," Green protested gently, her eyes imploring him to trust her. But Austin raised an eyebrow as he sipped his coffee.
"Then why ask?"
Green drew a deep breath, her voice was sincere and full of compassion as she said, "Ever since you watched whatever it was on those files, you've been acting... different. Like you're carrying a weight on your shoulders. I just thought that maybe sharing it would help you, you know, lessen the burden."
Austin's gaze met Green's, gratitude and the faintest flicker of something more dancing in his eyes. "Thanks," he whispered, feeling the warmth of the coffee now mirrored by the warmth of her presence, a balm for his aching heart.

Disclaimers: Chapter Frequency: I aim for one chapter a week. Chapter Length: I try to keep chapters between 3000 and 6000 words. Binge Preference: I plan for 30 chapters per arc. If you want to binge a complete arc, then that is the number to wait for. I will also add a line to chapters indicating the beginning and end of an arc. Advanced Access: I have created a patreon page with early access to four chapters for patrons. What to Expect: Progression fantasy with a western fantasy setting and with eastern fantasy elements. A main character that is forced to explore a very narrow path of magic due to a permanent condition. A main character that is a part of a larger cast. A main character that is growing but won't become the strongest around anytime soon. A story following a single main character but with introduction or theme setting scenes without the main character. What Not to Expect: Edgy grimdark characters – I will never write a sexual violence scene or gory descriptions of torture. I hate reading it and I would hate writing it even more. Romance – romantic relationships will never be the focus of the story and only appear in the background. The main character is preoccupied with other stuff. Other forms of relationships (family, friends, companions) play a bigger role. Cover: The cover art was commisioned from redditor Linh-Nguyen87. The font is alita brush by Inovatype Typefoundry. A Sky of Star and Strength
Jake was just an intelligent kid living a pretty regular life in Mill Creek, Washington. Then the apocalypse happens. Now with his Dad out of the country and totally in yet out his element, this is his story. My take on a system apocalypse based around "life force" as a currency. The main character will have a special power (as will most of the other characters) and be rather OP, you have been warned. Like many of the authors on this site I have no formal writing experience so writing tips and grammar corrections are much appreciated :)
