With the mutation issue pretty much solved, or at least as good as Chris figured they'd get any time soon, Chris decided to focus on the second issue, and after going through his memories, he remembered something that might help. A card appeared in one hand, and a phone in the other as Chris called the number. "Dr. Jacobs' office, this is Debra speaking, how may I help you?" The voice on the other end replied in a practiced manner with an almost bored tone.

Chris blinked. "Debra?"

"Chris?!?" Debra exclaimed on the other end. "What- why are you calling me at work!?!"

"Huh? No, I'm calling for Dr. Jacobs. I'm just surprised you're the one answering the phone." Chris replied. "If I wanted to talk to you, I wouldn't use the phone."

Debra blinked. "Oh. Right."

The line went silent for a moment, before Chris frowned. "So? Why are you answering phones?"

"Oh! Uh, I was… promoted? I'm still doing pretty much the same work, but now I'm exclusively Dr. Jacobs' research assistant, which means in addition to everything else I used to do, I also answer his phone and make appointments and such…" Debra explained a slight pout in her tone. "I know it's going to be good for me in the long run, but… I want to do actual research! I'm just- I'm tired of running around doing someone else's busywork."

"Huh… Well, don't worry, I'm sure you'll get there." Chris shrugged. "You're like what, twenty-seven?"

"I'm twenty-three." Debra grumbled.

"Even better." Chris retorted. "You're young, you have time. Focus on gaining experience, which is what I assume the position is for, and the advancements will come."

Debra sighed. "I suppose… thank you."

"No problem." Chris shrugged. "Now, about my actual reason for calling. I wanted to see about setting up an appointment with Dr. Jacobs. He expressed an interest in studying my ability and I could use some pointers on how to better explore it myself."

"Your ability?" Debra asked, confused. She knew his ability was special, but not to the level of Dr. Jacobs taking any particular interest in it. "Uh, well, I can sign you up for one of the participant slots… but Dr. Jacobs doesn't usually observe those. I could get you an actual appointment, but I'd need to talk to him first to make sure it's okay."

"I'd prefer an actual appointment, and I don't mind waiting." Chris responded.

"Okay." Debra nodded. "I'll need to put you on hold for a moment." She explained, before the line started playing some generic music as he waited.

Chris was just starting to vaguely enjoy the music, when it cut off and a new voice spoke up on the other side of the line. "Mr. Vincent?"

"Dr. Jacobs?" Chris asked in return.

"Ah ha! I was wondering when you'd take me up on my little offer!" The man laughed. "I'll get you in as soon as possible. How does tomorrow morning sound? Say nine?"

"Sounds good." Chris shrugged. He wasn't very particular about the timing, as long as it happened.

Dr. Jacobs chuckled. "Excellent!" He then sighed. "It's a pity you didn't call earlier. I could have gotten you in immediately."

Chris blinked. "So… if I was there, you could see me now?"

"Well, yes, but-" Dr. Jacobs began, before Chris cut him off.

"Okay, let's do that." Chris nodded, before hanging up the phone and appearing next to Debra, causing her to yelp and Dr. Jacobs to jump.

Dr. Jacobs stared at him for a moment, slightly stunned, still holding the phone to his ear. "So… you can teleport?"

"Eh, kinda." Chris shrugged. "Basically, yes, but I need to have left a portal point or have something connected to my world in the area."

"And which did you use here?" Dr. Jacobs asked, frowning. He wasn't sure what Chris meant by portal points or how something would be connected to his world, but he didn't think he had anything like that in his office.

Chris gestured to Debra with his thumb. "She's connected to my world."

Dr. Jacobs gave Debra a surprised look as she flushed in embarrassment. "Really? How?"

"Well, I was eating in my favorite restaurant, which is really more of a dive bar, when-" Chris began.

"I think he meant how is it possible, not the events leading to it!" Debra quickly interrupted, her flush deepening even further as she glared at Chris.

"Oh… I honestly don't know." Chris shrugged. "It just kinda happens."

Dr. Jacobs nodded slowly as he continued to study Debra intently. "I see… well, then, if you'd both follow me to the testing room? The machines there are much more precise than these old eyes of mine. Hopefully they'll be able to pick up more details."

"B-both of us?" Debra asked hesitantly.

"Why of course." Dr. Jacobs grinned. "How else are we going to study this connection?"

"I could bring out Jello. Or Dyrdek. Or T'ka. Or… well, I have quite a few people connected to my world at this point." Chris replied.

Dr. Jacobs blinked. Those… didn't sound like human names. "That… we will probably need to study all of them to isolate the variables involved in this connection of yours, but I believe Miss Valentine will be able to offer a unique perspective as a researcher herself. Wouldn't you say?" He asked, turning to Debra. She flushed again, hesitating before nodding in agreement. Working with people who knew the ropes and how they worked always helped get better results. "Excellent! Then let's get started!"

Dr. Jacobs led them down the hall and down a set of stairs to a large room full of machinery connected to a small chamber just large enough for someone to move around comfortably without worrying about hitting the walls. "If you'll both step inside, please?" Dr. Jacobs gestured for the two of them to step inside the chamber as he moved to a nearby computer. "Now, the first thing I'd like you to test is this teleportation of yours." Dr. Jacobs continued as they stepped inside. "If you could, teleport in and out a few times after I give the signal, alright?"

"Alright." Chris nodded.

"And… go!" Dr. Jacobs gave the signal and Chris began popping in and out of his world, at first just from the same spot, and then to the other side of Debra, before beginning to do circles and figure eights. "Okay, okay, that's all I need!" Dr. Jacobs exclaimed after a moment, studying the screen in front of him. "Fascinating… there's no sign of ability energy at all! I'd think you were somehow tapping into the teleporter network, but there's no sign of spatial energy either… The space simply warps around you, apropos of nothing!"

"That's… odd, isn't it?" Chris replied.

"Undoubtedly so." Dr. Jacobs nodded with a grin. "Now, what else can you do?"

The answer was 'not much'. At least, not much that Dr. Jacobs could actually see. He popped Debra in and out a few times, then did the same with Jello, Drydek, and T'ka. He also opened and closed his portal, which according to Dr. Jacobs was yet another fascinating ability that had no real explanation beyond the fact that he did it. Apparently his portal worked by intertwining the space of his world with the space around him in such a way that the space was still there, but his space was lurking underneath. It was kinda like a three dimensional hole… or would it be fourth dimensional? The only way to go through it would be to let go of the space around you. Like his portal wasn't over writing the original space, but under writing it, only coming into effect when the original was gone. Hence why his portal would simply ignore anything too big to fit inside. That got Chris to thinking that if he was under writing, was there a way for him to over write? And if so, would that allow him to mutate his subordinates outside the Immortal World? There was definitely a possibility, but he'd need to figure out how…

"So is that all?" Dr. Jacobs asked after they finished with the portals.

"Pretty much." Chris nodded. "At least, as much as you can see without getting all these machines into my world, which… well, if you give me the schematics, I could probably put them together fairly easily? I've never actually tried before, but it should be possible."

"Wait, can't you transform as well?" Debra asked. "Or is that only in your world?"

Chris blinked. "Ah, no, I just forgot…" He muttered. He'd been focused on how to reverse his portals, so his transformation had completely slipped his mind. That, and he didn't really count it as part of his ability. The Immortal World gave him the ability to mutate, but after that the transformation was more… physiological.

"You can transform?" Dr. Jacobs asked, surprised. That… didn't seem to fit with the portals and teleportation.

Chris nodded. "I can. My world lets me mutate, giving me different forms which I can shift between."

"Interesting…" Dr. Jacobs muttered. "Well, let's see what we can see then, eh?" He replied, typing some commands into the computer before gesturing for Chris to start.

Chris obliged and transformed back and forth a few times, cycling through his different forms. It wasn't until his fourth cycle that he paused, frowning. "Are you done?" He asked.

Dr. Jacobs looked up from the screen with a dumbfounded expression. "Can- can you do it one more time?" He asked hesitantly. Chris's frown deepened, but he did as he asked, and Dr. Jacobs sat back in his chair in shock. "I can't believe this. You are manipulating your body on a subatomic scale! Without any type of energy whatsoever! Purely using spatial control!"

Chris raised an eyebrow at him. "Spatial control?"

Dr. Jacobs shook his head. "It's the only way I know how to explain it. Your structure simply shifts, each particle jumping from one point to another, atoms rearranging… you're essentially deconstructing and reconstructing yourself at instant speeds!"

Chris nodded slowly. "Okay… but why is that so surprising?"

"Because it should kill you!" Dr. Jacobs exclaimed.

Chris blinked. "What?"

Dr. Jacobs jumped to his feet and started pacing. "Okay, do you know the old theory of teleportation?" Chris shook his head. "Basically, the idea was that you would break a person down in one spot and rebuild them in another, streaming their atomic structure across the intervening space. Since everything should be the same once the process is finished, then the person rebuilt on the other end should be the same as the person who was broken down, right?" Chris nodded hesitantly. "But that wasn't how it worked. No matter what, the creature that came out on the other end was simply a lifeless husk, because people aren't meant to be broken down! It kills you! Yet here you are, doing it over and over and over, perfectly fine!"

Chris blinked at him a few times. "Huh… Well, I guess there is one more thing to show you."

Dr. Jacobs paused. "Eh?"

Chris nodded. "Watch." He then took out a knife and stabbed himself in the head, collapsing to the chamber floor.

"No!" Dr. Jacobs exclaimed, jumping forward, before freezing as the body disappeared and Chris reappeared, back in perfect health.

"You see…" Chris began, grinning at the stunned Doctor. "I can't die."
