《How I Became A Jarl》Slaves Arena pt. 9

I hope this totem isn’t a big deal. I don’t want this guy going after me because I destroyed it. First I need to talk with him. And why the fuck is night already? Did he hold me there for that long?! When I arrived in front of the gates there were only guards. There was no point in waiting here.
[ Eric ]
“Hey. Have you seen Lord Gregor?”
[ Guard ]
“I may or may not.”
[ Eric ]
“Does this help?” I said as I tossed a silver coin to him.
[ Guard ]
“Now I remember! He was going to his mansion. The one with ornaments that look like snakes.”
[ Eirc ]
“Thanks for… the help.”
[ Guard ]
“My pleasure.”
Since he was a great lord he has to live in one of the big mansions. I didn’t find him on my way there so he probably was already there. The guards stood by the gate with snake ornaments. They probably wouldn’t just let me get in. The fence was pretty high. I wouldn’t be able to get over it if not for my powers. I was able to get over it and didn’t make much sound. The guards didn’t even notice me.
Now, where could he be? I looked at every window searching for a light. I see it… On the second floor… I have to climb and somehow get in… Why does it have to be that hard… Luckily rich people love making good-looking buildings so I used columns and sills for the windows. He was right there in his office looking at some papers. The window was slightly opened so I had a way to come in.
[ Gregor ]
“What do you want intruder?” He asked before I could even try to open the window to get in.

[ Eric ]
“I wanted to talk with you for a minute.” I said as I opened the window.
[ Gregor ]
“Why would I want to talk with you?”
[ Eric ]
“My name is Eric. I’m blessed like you.”
[ Gregor ]
“Blessed? By who?”
[ Eric ]
“The same god as you. Loki”
When I said Loki’s name he threw me into the room without a word. He did it so fast that I couldn’t react that well to that. I was able to land without much damage. When I stood up I saw him closing the windows He pointed his hand at the door and made a movement like he was closing the door with a key and somehow he did it. I heard the click.
[ Eric ]
“Hey. I didn’t come here to fight. Just talk.”
[ Gregor ]
“If you’re blessed by Loki that means he ordered you to destroy the totem…”
[ Eric ]
“What totem? I don’t know anything.”
[ Gregor ]
“Liar!” As he said that a spear appeared out of thin air.
He jumped on me with a spear, aiming right for my heart. He is trying to kill me! Not just knock me out or something. Kill! His fellow blessed guy. We’re sharing the same “blessing”! Right after I jumped away he took his hand forward like he was grabbing something. When he pulled his hand back, the rug that I was standing on moved and made me fall. What kind of trick is that?!
This time when he attacked me I tried pushing his spear away but he used that to his advantage. He impaled the spear into the floor and used it to gain speed from the spin and kicked me. Now I understand what Loki meant by me being under him in ranking. He is a freaking monster!

When I hit the desk I took all the papers and threw them at him. I used this as a cover and tried punching him but even with all that falling paper in the way he grabbed my fist. Right then I noticed something on his neck. A small wooden totem. I acted like I didn’t notice it and tried hitting him with an uppercut. He tried dodging in but thanks to that I was able to grab the totem.
[ Eric ]
“This wasn’t my main reason to come here but you gave me no other option!”
[ Gregor ]
“No! Stop!” He shouted as he saw me snapping the totem in half.
Darkness covered a whole room. Loki pulled me to his world again but this time I wasn’t the only one here. Gregor was also here. At least his spear is left in Midgard. He was clearly angry at me. I don’t know what this totem does but I hope it was worth it.
[ Loki ]
“Hey, old man! It’s been a long time. Was it ten? Or even twelve years?”
[ Gregor ]
“It’s not like you’re younger than me. I didn’t miss that voice one bit.”
[ Loki ]
“Haha! I knew that the third time is the charm. You killed the last two I send for the totem but this lucky guy made it! Haha! Oh… Funny.”
[ Eric ]
“Why this totem was so important?”
[ Loki ]
“That totem you destroyed prevented me from talking with that geezer.”
[ Eric ]
“Wait… You mean you killed two people! And tried to kill me?! Just to not talk with this guy?! Are you fucking crazy?!”
[ Gregor ]
“Just you wait and you’ll do the same.”
[ Eric ]
“Did you even explain how important this totem is?”
[ Gregor ]
“First time yes. But the guy was so greedy for what Loki promised that he didn’t listen. The second guy was killed on the spot. If they don’t want to listen why should I explain.”
[ Eric ]
“I told you I wanted to talk first!”
[ Gregor ]
“Now that you say that. I can sense that you’re not lying about that…”
[ Eric ]
“You can sense lies?”

Dungeons & Demons
*!* This story is currently being continued on a different page, following years of hiatus and extensive rewrites *!* Please follow the link to read the up-to-date version: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/53863/cycles-of-ruin Basil von Doom is a powerful dungeon keeper with a simple mission: to bring ruin and destruction upon civilized worlds at the height of their decadence and stagnation. Much like his father before him, the new master of House Doom is a prodigy of war, yet the venerable minions of his household still hold strange loyalties toward his missing ancestor, silently comparing the legendary rage of his father to the more pragmatic approach of the son. Adding to Basil’s frustrations is the lack of accomplishment he feels for his work, with the dungeon keeper often taking on handicaps just to give his enemies a fighting chance. With all the power and wealth one could ever dream of already within his grasp, Basil now finds that the achievements of others kindle more joy in his heart than his own crushing victories. Thus Basil has taken up mentoring the next generation of dungeon keepers to try and diagnose the cause for his own lack of passion. With his apprentice, Elnora, managing most of the daily work around the dungeon, Basil can finally turn his attention towards his personal concerns, such as tackling the shadow of his legendary father that still looms large over him.

God complex
A hero is summoned to another world, vanquishes evil, yadda yadda, saves the kingdom and lives happily ever after. There is no such hero in this story. Just a desperate youth with great ambition and very little to lose. A zero to hero style story set in a country clearly inspired by modern USA with just as many issues and the minority of mages often pulling strings from the shadows. I am also hoping the whole thing won't turn out edgy enough to cut me. I want to rely on actual good writing rather than cheap powertrip gimmicks. edit: Please don't mind Zetari's salty review. He is quite literally making up any use of the torture and human experimentation trope and says MC is blank after 4 chapters where he conveniently stops reading just at the start of his first character development. For extra entertainment, I will be uploading chapters two at a time and compose a relevant poem through the chapter names. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

Humanity's End
Given a year to prepare by the mysterious ‘system’ for contact with the wider galaxy, humanity must work to ensure the Earth’s defense is ready to meet any challenge. Sadly, most of the world seems dedicated to tearing itself apart as the year-end deadline gets closer. The west is in barely contained Chaos, while the east descends into internal conflict and war. The Pillar Forts, one of the few successful projects of the United Nations headed by the United States, stand ready to defend humanity against any invasion that may come through the strange Connection Pillars that appeared on each continent. Massive steel and stone walls that surround the Connection Pillars. They are filled with deadly men and women trained in all manner of warfare, each trained in the newly acquired System with skills and magical abilities that they put to deadly purpose. Beside these brave warriors, tanks, helicopters, artillery and more stand ready to defend humanity at each of these powerful installations. But, can they overcome the disparity in levels and experience between themselves and the forces that threaten them and the rest of humanity? Main Characters Jessica Brown- A young African American girl. Her 18th birthday in Detroit was the same day the systems message appeared. She discovered she was Level 7, much higher than most of the rest of the world. Why she is blessed, or cursed, with the power she doesn’t know. But what she does know is that she rather likes the feeling that comes with manipulating magic. The week after her birthday, government workers started testing every person in the US in a massive census effort of skills and abilities. Jessica Brown found herself conscripted into the US Magical Corp, a new branch of the US Military, and shipped off to a Pillar Fort. Somewhere hot and muggy in her ancestors’ home of Africa. As she grows stronger, she finds she has some connection to the pillars. While everyone else sees beauty or danger when they look at the pillars, after connection is made all Jessica can see is a Tree. A tree the size of the entire universe. Isaka Smith - is a third generation American and farmer who just wants to be left alone. But she is dragged into the situation by events beyond her control. When people in her small town had to deal with rioters and looters after the system announcement, she rallied them to defend themselves, earning her a trait that the government found extraordinarily useful. After a visit to a local reservation, she finds herself conscripted to lead one of the many small support towns erected around the great pillar forts. Not near her old home, but in far-flung Africa. John McIntire, the “Fighting Bull” -The commander of the African Fort, but because of circumstances beyond his ability to contend with shortly after taking command after being re-activated from retirement, he finds communication with his chain of command increasingly difficult. The US government, hell, even the United Nations, seems to have fallen into complete and utter chaos. The African Union is embroiled in a bitter civil war just outside his door, and supposedly, most of the world governments are in similar situations. Meanwhile, John must do his best to be ready to facilitate diplomacy, or to match the hostile argument of whatever force might come through the pillar of light when the year timer finishes counting down. Can our heros defend Earth from outside threats, while it tares itself apart? Or will they need to rebuild from the ground up? DEDICATION: This story is dedicated to my father who passed away recently. Jim Holloway, you’ll be missed you old silverback gorilla. Love you dad. Always have, always will.

This story will have a large amount of characterization and slice of life moments.
