《Unliving》Chapter 246 - A New Horizon

“The Silver Maiden deserved the greatest credits for the proliferation of healing knowledge in this day and age, and many of those lives saved by it, in my opinion. In the past, healers had guarded their knowledge, techniques, and methodologies closely, often only bestowing the knowledge to a chosen disciple or direct descendants.
She ignored that practice entirely, nay, contemptuously, even. The Silver Maiden performed her healings openly, and happily taught anyone who desired to learn her techniques and methods without discrimination. Those she taught, moved by her selflessness, in turn further disseminated those knowledge and methods, which led to the widespread availability of medical knowledge we enjoy today.
Nowadays even a small-time village healer would know many techniques and tricks that only royal healers would have known in the past.” - Alvida Norstrom, Physician and Medical Historian from the Kingdom Down Under, circa 477 FP.
“Out of the way!” said Clarissa as she had her guards rudely remove the physician who was treating her unconscious mother to the side. She, Aideen, and Solenia had ridden their horses with minimal rest, pushing the animals as hard as they could even with the aid of Aideen’s healing magic, and reached Algenverr in three days, instead of the week-long journey expected from the Royal Capital.
“Young Lady? What is the meaning of this-” asked the old physician, somewhat affronted before Graciela covered his mouth with one hand and dragged him away, if gently. The old man’s outrage was understandable, as one did not simply tear away a healer from their patient like that, but Clarissa was far too impatient to care for such niceties at the moment. All she had in her mind was her mother’s condition.
Aideen herself knelt by the bedside of the stricken Duchess, and gently laid a hand on the woman’s wrist, before she gently pulsed her mana through the unconscious woman’s body to inspect her condition. The old physician looked ready to burst, but calmed down somewhat when he saw the expertise and gentleness with which Aideen moved her mana.

“Shut up and you can watch,” Clarissa whispered to the old physician quietly so as not to distract Aideen. “But mark my words, should you end up distracting Miss deVreys and disturbing the treatment I will have your head on a platter.”
Everyone watched as Aideen quietly began treating the unconscious Duchess. Her injuries were quite severe, with a heavy concussion and a cracked skull, as well as her spine being broken in three places. For the vast majority of healers anywhere, such injuries would have made them give up, or pronounce the patient a vegetable at best.

Aideen was not one of the majority.
With utmost care, she controlled tiny tendrils of mana to work on the broken and now partially fused spinal cord of the Duchess, taking extra care on the nerves as she slowly soothed the damaged portions while reconnecting them, one at a time. It was tedious, finicky work which required all of her concentration, and thus she dared not do it too quickly.
The old Physician watched her work at first with raised eyebrows and unvoiced question, but before long, his mouth opened and his eyes bulged as he stared at her work with enthusiasm and excitement not unlike a child seeing their favorite toy. Before long he was staring slack-jawed at the proceedings until Aideen finally rose from her kneeling position fifteen minutes later and wiped the sweat that had beaded her brows.
“Give her a few hours and she should regain consciousness,” said Aideen to the hopeful Clarissa. “She will need a lot of rest still, and nutritious foods. Avoid giving her food that is too heavy on the stomach for the next week at least, but otherwise, she should be fine. Now where are the others?”

As Clarissa and a few knights led Aideen to where her cousin Daniel lay, the old physician inspected the unconscious Duchess’ condition with trembling hands. He almost failed to restrain a cry of incredulity when he found her in perfect health after Aideen’s treatment, then his eyes shone and he hastened to catch up with the others.
Aideen repeated the treatment she gave the Duchess to Clarissa’s cousin Daniel, and took about as long. The two of them had similar injuries, Daniel’s probably somewhat worse, as he had also broken his hip bone. All that meant was an extra couple of minutes work for Aideen, while the old physician watched her closely, enthralled at her methods of healing, with the eyes of a devoted fanatic.
Clarissa had wanted to order the knights to drag the old man away, but belayed that thought when she noticed how the old man strived to be as silent as he could, even holding his breath at times. Eventually, after Aideen was done with Daniel, they all went to Clarissa’s father, the Duke’s chambers.
There they found the Duke handling some paperwork with another middle-aged man whose countenance shared much similarity with the Duchess, likely the uncle Clarissa mentioned. Clarissa herself dragged her uncle away and quickly set Aideen to work on healing her father over the baffled looks of the two men, not taking any of their objections.
“I… I can feel my legs!” intoned the Duke with surprise not five minutes later as Aideen stepped away with a smile.
“Please take care not to try to stand too soon. Your leg muscles had likely athropied quite a bit during these weeks where you were confined to bed,” warned Aideen as she looked at the suddenly energetic look on the Duke’s face. “If you insist on trying to stand, at least have some helper available to help catch you should you fall.”
“Alfonso! Clarissa! Help me up, quick!” yelled the Duke from his bed as he shifted his legs down from the bed. His brother-in-law and daughter quickly came to him and helped him as he stood up gingerly on trembling legs, but neither could keep a smile from their faces as they saw the Duke’s wide smile as he carefully took one step, then another.
From the side, Aideen looked at the Duke’s uncertain steps with a pleased expression.

Of Gods and Dungeons
March 16, 2021 - Hiatus note: I will come back to this story! I'm really struggling with it, though. It's been a number of years and I kind of forgot what the original outline was. I still remember the main path, but not any of the details, because I stupidly didn't write an outline. Progress is being made. I'd like a very decent sized buffer before I start posting again. Don't want to get hopes up only to immediately disappoint! ----- Amy Barnes, an aspiring chemical researcher, finds herself dying from cancer. One of her most desperate prayers is answered in a way that she'd never dreamed possible, and she finds herself living a new life as a dungeon. Warning: Violence, morbidity Cover: Taken from here, courtesy of www.pexels.com by photographer @tookapic. Author's Note: I've read some dungeon core stories on here, and they've tickled my fancy. I've thought up a whole story, start to finish, and thought it'd be a blast to put it into words. Other than the violent and morbid aspects, this story is suitable for children. Aside from the vocabulary, that is. I will avoid the temptation to have any cursing, sexuality, or gore. Excessive gore, I suppose - it is a dungeon story, after all. I’ll do a little research from time to time, but this story will not have a great deal of rigor. I’ve made Amy’s knowledge comparable to my own for that reason. There’s a few things she knows more about than I do, and a few things that she knows less about. Unlike me, she doesn’t have access to Google - it’s a non issue for her to be more knowledgeable than me, on occasion :P This story does not use the same magic system that I’ve used in either Sorcery in Boston or A Summoner’s Confession. This one is mostly intention based, and designed to be easier access for people who are more used to the idea of, “It’s magic, therefore it works” kind of thinking. Do note that Amy is, in most senses of the term, overpowered. This goes along with the usual dungeon core stories. She’s not more powerful than other dungeons per se, but she does have knowledge and intelligence that puts them to shame. I thought about doing this in a LitRPG style, but systems take balance, and I wanted this to be pure fun to write. This story was inspired from a few sources. Despite the title, it wasn’t really inspired by Of Mice and Men, though some of the themes match. Rather, I’ve taken inspiration from a few dungeon core novels on Royal Road Legends for the main idea. Many conventions of dungeon core stories have been perverted from the genre, however. I’ve taken my usual science-loving self to town to play around with the powers, and I can only hope you have half as much fun reading this as I have had writing it.

A World With or Without Aliens
Nothing matters. It's not my opinion, it's a scientific fact. This is neither good nor bad, it just... is. I watched my entire country burn, fried on a patriotic pan after some jerk fired a bunch of nukes at the docile fleet of alien ships hovering over us. Who gave this moron such power? I don't know. Everyone involved is most likely dead by now. As for me, I can't die. I feel pain like a normal person would (I think), but no matter how terrible the conditions, I will never die or pass out. Fortunately, a lot of alien technology survived its crash to Earth, so I get to spend some time playing with it until Mr. Author gets bored and decides to screw up my life. Beware, this has a "harem" tag. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm the main character and am therefore subject to this novel's timeline. While this bars me from the sweet ignorance of Chapter 1's me, it does have other perks... for example, I can tell you that heroine number one is personally responsible for kil-!? H-hey, back off! I'm your character, so if you didn't want me to be like this, then you should've written me differently! Randomguy here! In all seriousness, this novel is meant to explore the concept of nihilism as a post-apocalyptic/supernatural-scifi/satire told from a nihilistic introvert's first-person perspective. As you heard from my unsettled main character, each heroine is going to be a different type of horrifying socio/psychopath with dark motives and dangerous abilities (most of which are psychological). Why would I do something like this? Because I am, in reality, a nihilist who is often frustrated by weird things, like unrealistically dramatic stories, the industrialization of art (specifically music), and people who think swimming in brown creekwater for five hours is a "fun" activity. Don't get me wrong, neither me nor my character are depressed, we're just malcontents who make a lot of nerd references. I feel like the true essence of an "everything is worthless" perspective is lost on most pop-culture figures. The closest character I can think of at the moment is Rick from Rick and Morty, who is a drunk, angry nihilist that experienced tremendous loss. I, personally, find this belligerent state of mind to be very relatable, and have incorperated it into every chapter's introduction. Here, the main character talks directly to the reader (and me), shamelessly complaining about some semi-relevant facet of society, which probably doesn't make much sense... it's not really supposed to, though. These "angry nihilist" moments are just a peak into the main character's everyday existence, and also act as miniature rage-journals for me. It will sometimes take a subjectively 'positive' turn, but not very often. This is because reality isn't good or bad, "it just... is". I will eventually bring it full-circle to optimistic nihilism, since that seems to be a more practical way to live (and by "practical", I mean "doesn't create mental health issues"). It is, of course, a satire. I did this because most unnecessarily emotional moments or people usually make me feel kind of awkward, so I decided to mock them. That is, I plan to mock the characteristics about them I don't like in characters based solely off said characteristics. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy my story!
