《Fated (A Chris Evans Series)》Goodbye, California

With the decision to move to Boston made at the end of May, the couple had approximately two months to pack for their state move. They would've had longer if Chris hadn't just signed a contract; the 5th of August was the latest date they needed him in Boston by, so they were on a bit of a time crunch. Unfortunately, this move was not one that could be completed within a few days. They could not fit everything in a couple of suitcases and half a dozen boxes, and simply drive forty-six minutes to their desired destination. They were married, with a toddler, and a dog. They were moving states so they had to reroute their mail, inform their doctors, and cancel the delivery subscription they had signed with their local grocer. They had to decide on a moving company, then on items that were worth moving and that was not an easy task. Everything seemed to hold some sort of memory that neither could let go of. They wanted to take everything with them, even an old tennis ball that Dodger had worn out playing fetch.

After two weeks of unsuccessful sorting, putting things into donation boxes and garbage bags only to take them out an hour later- the couple agreed they'd had about enough. They bit the bullet and got rid of clothes they hadn't worn in over a year, donating them to Goodwill as soon as they'd boxed it up so they couldn't change their mind. It was after that first step that things started to fall into place. Their grips loosened and they actually became productive. They got rid of the things they didn't need and packed up what they did, boxing and setting them aside for the big day. Everything they didn't have an immediate need for, items they could live without until they moved- they packed up. With each day, they chipped away at their list of to-dos until it came down to their final week in California.

Their final week, members of their families gave up personal time to lend a hand in the packing. Lisa flew in with Scott and Shanna; Richard and Tina drove up; and Donovan and Erica stopped by on their days off, offering help wherever it was needed most. Together, they tied up the loose ends and directed the moving men when they came to collect the furniture and boxes. Before long, the line of U-Hauls were on their way to Boston and the couple was left standing in the empty house they once called their home.

Chris and Denise's last night in Los Angeles, Richard and Tina hosted a farewell dinner at their home. With Lisa, Scott, and Shanna already staying there until the flight back to Boston- Richard and Tina had extra hands with the food preparation. What was meant to be a simple home cooked dinner ended up being a feast. Bottles of champagne were popped as they celebrated another one of Chris and Denise's big milestone, with subtle hints dropped that a second child be the next milestone they aimed for. After a long night of festivities, laughter, and lounging around, the dinner party came to a close. With family members being the only attendees, everyone helped with the clean up. Everyone, but the guests of honor, who'd excused themselves an hour ago. After their son fell asleep, they tucked him into the bed Nana Lisa had been sleeping in and watched as Dodger settled beside him. They kissed Jack's forehead and scratched Dodger behind the ears before leaving them in the care of their parents and siblings to spend one last night in the house they'd spent their first night together in.

With the house emptied out, their footsteps echoed as they walked in from the front door. Denise looked around with a rueful smile, sighing when she thought of all the wonderful memories they'd made in the house. The house was where she'd met Dodger for the first time. It was where Chris had told her he loved her, where they'd spent their first night together. It was where they'd made up after their first big fight, as well as where he'd proposed to her. It was where Jack was conceived, where they found out she was pregnant with him, where his first and second birthdays were celebrated. It was where she signed the contract that made her a director for the first time, and where Chris first watched her film and gave her his unbiased review. It was crazy to think that this time tomorrow, they were going to be settling in their new place in Boston. It was also a little scary, starting over. But she was also excited for all the new memories they were going to create there.

All the moments leading up to her being in his life now, he didn't want to forget anything. He feared he would. With their plates so full, with a child to raise- he feared the new memories would replace the old ones. He feared he'd forget how truly lucky he was to have found her in such a crazy world, that life would get in the way and he'd forget how to appreciate her. It wasn't an irrational fear, he'd seen so many relationships end that he had to be careful with his own; a once-in-a-lifetime love that could not be replaced if lost or broken. The more he thought about it, the more he unraveled. He began filling himself with unnecessary angst and foolish regret, that quickly dissipated when Denise slipped her hand into his. Her touch reminded him of the conversation they had the night he brought up the move, what she'd said when he asked her what she wanted- what she truly wanted.

"I want you, that's all I've ever wanted for as long as I can remember."

Chris smiled to himself and laced his fingers with hers, shaking his head ever so slightly as he scolded himself. He was an idiot if he thought he could forget anything about her. She was remarkable and unforgettable, and when he closed his eyes, he could still remember what she was wearing the first time he saw her. And if he feared that he would forget how lucky he was, or how to appreciate her then he didn't deserve her. So what if he'd seen dozens of relationships end? His relationship was different and her love for him was everlasting. If he still didn't get it after all she'd said and done to prove it, then he was an idiot who definitely didn't deserve her.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah." Chris pressed his lips to the side of Denise's head as she subconsciously leaned towards him. His smile widened as he caught a whiff of her candy-like perfume, and he felt his heart skip a beat. It was a simple notion, but it was all the confirmation he needed to know he was still as in-love with her as he'd been in the beginning, that she hadn't lost her ability of making him weak in the knees. He quietly breathed her in then whispered, "I'm great."

"I can't believe this is our last night in this house."

"Honestly," he admitted, "didn't think we'd go through with it."

"Honestly?" She looked over at him and chuckled, "me neither. Since you showed me the house, moving to Boston has been on the back of my mind. Occasionally I'll picture what our lives will be like once we move and settle down there, but it always seemed like a fantasy, y'know? The end game. I didn't think we'd actually get there. But now the day's actually here and...I don't know, it's exciting, but it's also a little overwhelming. We're going to have to start from the beginning, get comfortable in a new neighborhood and..." She trailed off, sighing. "I don't know, I don't really know what I'm talking about."

"You're not regretting the decision, are you?"

"No," she quickly answer. "Of course not, this is- it's a step in the right direction and it's come at a good time. I know you're going to be pulled away for work as soon as we get there, but at least we're going to be in the same state. And while you're working, Jack and I can go around and familiarize ourselves with Boston. He's going to preschool next year so I can start shortlisting. Carly texted, she's already recommended us for Sunny Hill. She said the place is great and they allow early admission. I can go do some scouting and get to know the other parents, perhaps even arrange a few play dates so he can start making potential lifelong friends." She said and he fought the urge to laugh at her type-A personality. "I think-"

"I think we can talk about it in Boston," he said and she chuckled. The promise they made in the car to spend the night focused on them came to mind. "This is our last night in the house, the house we spent our first night together in. Can we focus on us tonight?" He asked as he gently pulled her in front of him, resting both his hands on her waist. "We are free from responsibilities tonight, I think we should take advantage of that." He pulled her closer, pressing her body flush against his. "Don't you?" The smirk on his lips could be felt when he kissed her cheek, lips lingering long enough to make her blush.

"You realize there isn't a piece of furniture left in this house, right? The bed is gone, the couch is gone. We've completely emptied out the place, we don't even have a throw cushion or a blanket that can provide some padding to soften the hardwood floor."

"And since when has that been a problem?" His strong hands steered her backwards, towards the nearest wall. She giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck when her back hit the cool wall with a quiet thud, she saw his smirk and knew exactly what he had in mind. "Just because we're married with a kid now, doesn't mean we have to be boring. Need I remind you that you're twenty-four? I married a young wife for a reason," he joked and she laughed.

"If you'd said that while you were still rocking your porn 'stache, we'd have a big problem." She quipped and he threw his head back, laughing. "I don't think I truly appreciated your beard until you had that mustache." She cupped his face in her hands, brushing his beard with the pads of her thumbs. "God, it was truly an abomination. No offense," she giggled when she heard him omit a playful scoff.

"Oh, I am very offended. I was in my prime with that mustache," he joked and she burst into a fit of laughter. "Seriously." He tried not to laugh along with her, but it was a challenge when her laughter was so contagious to him. "I was smoking hot with that porn 'stache. Everyone who said I lucked out with you, said it was you who lucked out with me after seeing me with that mustache."

"You are such a dork." She giggled as he leaned in to meet her lips. She could feel his smile grow as they kissed, his hands sliding down from her waist. She drew him closer as his hands wandered, caressing her curves. In one swift move, he hoisted her onto his hips and guided her legs around his waist. Her back hit the wall with another soft thud and she breathlessly broke the kiss, resting her forehead against his. "Mustache or not," she whispered, "I am the one who lucked out in this relationship."

"Debatable," he disagreed with a shake of his head and a smile so wide it reached his eyes. She mirrored his smile, pressing her lips to his again. "I love you," he whispered when they broke for air. "I know I say those three words a lot, but I hope they haven't lost their effect."

"Chris Evans." She ran her fingers through his hair. "I will never get tired of hearing you tell me you love me, nor will I ever stop believing you when you do." She promised and he chuckled. "And so we're on the same page," she began as she inched closer to his lips, "I love you too."
